Description:
Pure nostalgia - another completely re-done bouncy tune with my usual a'lewd'ing lyrics - from my folk-rock era. Apologies to the Dr Who theme and Chi mi(?) of which trace elements seem to have crept in. Dedicated to the original performers and friends:
Chops - bass
Muffy - drums
Anya - backing vox
Barney - fiddle
Chris - rhythm guitar, mandolin
APB - lead guitar, vox.
Technical details:
32 tracks (why? good question ..)
Harmonica is chopped up loops to give a gist of what I was going for - any real bluesy harmonica players up for having a go at replacing my efforts are most welcome.
Also, I'd really like real fiddle in this too.
Let me know if your interested - drop me a Note thing.
Lyrics:
When I was only three,
A present was bought for me,
That left a long lasting impression.
Although I was very small,
I can still recall,
A "Spacehopper" was that invention.
I bounced.
Part of all the fun,
Was just being young,
There was no other intention,
But now I'm older now,
I get the same somehow,
By drinking pints in quick succession.
I bounce.
The first girl I had,
Didn't look half bad,
She liked folk and heavy metal.
Side-to-side she moved,
An' round and round she grooved,
But up and down was something special!
She bounced.
Hardware:
Intel Mac Mini "iVor the Engine",
MOTU Traveler,
Rode NT1-A + pop shield,
Gibson Les Paul Studio (EMG-ZW pickups)
Software:
GB v3.0.4,
Drums on demand.

nice elements! &mdash 12/26/06 - 12:20:11 PM
As usual, you've put together a good tune with interesting elements. This is a catchy tune, repetitive but with cool effects such as the harmonica and that "brrr..brrr..brrr.." sound.
The bouncy theme fits the bouncy toy perfectly. [ Reply to This ]
Thanks for stopping in .. &mdash 12/26/06 - 06:53:26 PM
.. so early too ;o) Yes, the key to catchyness is repetition. The key to catchyness is repetition .. but you have a good point - needs more sparkle, variations thoughout. Oh those noises are me mucking about with my new mic - and trying to liven up the rather lack lustre chorus.

Mixolydian Pigeon Power &mdash 12/26/06 - 08:35:19 PM
Well, it's perfectly named; the music perfectly captures a bouncy mood! It's got all the ingredients of a well-crafted pop song. PLUS, it's got some kind of pigeon sound there -- the brr sounds -- which is pretty much a guarantee of huge international sales.
(To follow-up on haribo's comment, mixolydian is a major scale with a flatened 7th degree... so, for example: A B C# D E F# G A, which I think is the scale you're using here.) [ Reply to This ]
Thanks Clark .. &mdash 12/26/06 - 09:07:28 PM
glad you liked it. Yeah, it's kinda alt-pop genre too ..hybrid of many things.
Yup, my general Ceilidh 'noise' got a bit pidgeon-esque :o)(all part of the fun) but I can do a much better pidgeon noise if you think it will give rise to wide-spread commercial success? ;o)
Ah, these scale modes: on the first run up I go
like: A,E,G,A,B,C#,D,C#,A .. but when I noticed there was
no F# in my scale I tried changing the G to F# and
it seemed to work too hmm.. it goes pretty quick making it pretty hard to tell what would work better in fact. So that'll be the mixolydian anyways. Learn something everyday - thanks chaps. Maybe I should learn some theory ... hard to teach an old dog new tricks ...I've still got Logic Pro to learn. I'll pick it up as I go ...play it by ear lol.

Folk/pop/prog/alt/rock with some technical stuff thrown in. Tight and bouncy - drives really well and I really like what Chops is doing on bass.
Great track Alan!

Thanks very much Neil .. &mdash 12/27/06 - 09:47:15 AM
.. my dear chum "Chops" was a total beginner to bass when
we assembled for a laugh and to keep us out the pub ... so
I mostly wrote him something simple to play and as he progressed he altered things more to his liking in rehearsals. I faithfully restored the part with midi and a GB soft instrument bass in this version.
I just got his regular Xmas email - he's officially a fellow countryman of yours now and calls himself a 'Scozzie'.
Permission to subject the general population of bounce loving Aussie's to this - if only for a chance to see "Chops"'s face if he heard it. His real first name is Alan too and last I knew he was in the vicinity of Palm Springs- wish him a happy Hogmanney from me.
I wonder if Disney ever do a "Winnie the Pooh and Roo too" film if they'ld be interested - might want to change the lyrics .. hmm ..lol.

.. yup I hear the Bollywood thing too - cool! It's perhaps a side-effect of not having JP4 and having to use many layers of GB 3 soft-instruments with slightly different settings for attack etc.
PS. Brighton - small world. I lived in Guildford for 8 years and used to pop to Brighton every now and again. Had my reindeer do .. I mean, stag do there early 2000 in fact.

A good friend of mine once said it was 3/4 time that put the true "roll" in "rock 'n' roll"; it always reminds me of pirates sailing on the high seas, swinging tankards of ale and rum back and forth. This is very light-hearted, yet rockin' in the highest form. Nice runs! And I love the lyrics - from innocent to pissed to bawdy in just three verses. You're obviously having fun with this one and it really shows. Highly enjoyable! [ Reply to This ]

I'm just amazed Hun and Clark can just listen and go "ah, the old mixolydian, haven't heard that chestnut for a while" .. of course I'm para-phrasing and editing out the swearing .. lol. As my production hopefully improves, I'm going backwards in time in songs I wrote until I've done everything .. then I will finish unfinished things and then be forced to write something completely from scratch. (oh no lol). Also glad mentioned the vocals - even though this is one of the most 'unsung' kind-of vocal I've done .. I think ..

Thanks you very much lassies... &mdash 01/10/07 - 09:55:30 AM
.. Anne & Marty, appreciate it- (btw who is on the left/right?). When I wrote this I was in my early 20's - so I had alot more energy to fling around - and I wrote this purposely for a folky group I was in: so I naturally drew inspiration from my celtic background to install some folkiness. Seems 'energetic' & 'infectious' are becoming recurring words describing my earlier material. The harmonica was a 'this version' addition: chopped up GB loops (I can't play harmonica like that) and the extra vocals was really just me having some fun with my xmas pressie (a new mic)- the high 'oo' worked ok but the lower harmony with it warbles a bit too much for my liking now. I'm pleased it still stands the test of time. Thanks again for your kind words. [ Reply to This ]

Download option ... APB's adopted policy &mdash 01/29/07 - 06:56:13 AM
I work like this: if I already know in advance something isn't complete and I will re-post a more complete version later, then I disable download on first post. (I was never keen on the fact that to get some feedback, advice, suggestions etc from the musician community I had to post something I wasn't really happy with distributing anywhere
to anyone). I think there is certain points in a songs development (before complete) where some input/help can really make a difference and also save a lot of re-doing work.
In this case, I really would like to add a real fiddle
and if at all possible real harmonica in some future
post. Then (if no other reason prevents me from doing so) I have no qualms about enabling download.
In the meantime, if people ask and really want a copy of these earlier versions/mixes they can always leave their e-mail via a Note and I will almost certainly send them a copy- but then I know who has received the earlier versions ;o) and I like the more personal and 'make contacts' touch this forces. Maybe I'm just a control freak ;o)

Is it folk rock &mdash 02/06/07 - 10:11:52 AM
if there's a harmonica in it? I would almost call it blues-metal or something like that.
That said, this is another excellent tune. Your arrangements sound really good with the integration of the guitars and the big synths. The vocals seem better balanced in this one than the other tune I just commented on.
Great stuff! [ Reply to This ]
Thanks again Victor &mdash 02/06/07 - 04:50:44 PM
.. very happy you were motivated to take the time to listen to another one.
This tune did start more folk-rock (with fiddle & a second guitar) but I never like to get pigeon-holed (I'm off on a tangent about pigeons again .. oh no) and never try to keep any of my songs to one genre, or even write to some notion of genre .. bit boring.. anyways, thus .. when the harmonica was tried and I liked the result of it's addition to this version, it stayed and I crossed "genres" without stopping to check my underwear .. I do tend to 'beef up' things and the layering of the synth strings worked fairly well with some admittedly more metal sounding than rock guitar. I still want fiddle in it - can we settle on metal-folk-blues? lol ;o) [ Reply to This ]
Love it! &mdash 02/11/07 - 04:06:56 AM
