Description:
This is my farewell song to 2006.
This is a year I am glad will be over and one I hope to forget. Duing the past year my wife divorced me, I lost a very dear relative, I lost a very dear friend and fellow musician, a friend became gravely ill (and fortunately got better after many, many months) and two very loved long-time pets died. So, in short, 2006 sucked big time. So it can go. Goodbye. Don't let the door hit you in the ass as you leave.
But, as much as it sucked, it did bring about some good things. I made some great new friends I wouldn't have if some of the events above hadn't occurred. I became closer to friends and family and I made some really great music (at least I think so.)
So, this one is for 2006 and for all those who are ready to say goodbye and are looking forward to a brighter, happier year ahead.
Lyrics:
Time to Say Goodbye
©2006 Joseph Gurner
It’s been a long year
and it’s time to
say
goodbye
Come on and take, my hand
we’ll walk together, away from here
It’s been so long, and you’ve had you doubts
but the end of, the darkness is near
Too many times, I’ve said goodbye
Too little laughter, too many tears
Too much burden, too little rest
Too much sorrow, too many fears
Another day
Another year
Another chance
To lose our fears
It’s time
to say goodbye
Yes, it’s time
to say goodbye
Through the fire and through the rain
Through the heart ache and through the pain
I look at you, you make me smile
and it makes everything worth while
Another day
Another year
Another chance
To lose our fears
It’s time
to say goodbye
Yes, it’s time
to say goodbye
it’s time
to say goodbye
Yes, it’s time
to say goodbye

I agree... &mdash 12/30/06 - 12:50:22 PM
That 2006 can go now! Although my year hasn't been quite the same as yours (my condolences and the like), I can very much appreciate the lyrics to this tune. I really liked the guitar melody used as well, something that could definitely get caught in my head. Over-all a great year-end tune. [ Reply to This ]
Thanks &mdash 01/02/07 - 06:22:36 PM
Now that 2006 is gone, I can breath a little easier (well, now that 2006 and my hangover are both gone. :) )
I appreciate you comments. My guitar work is still very basic, so I'm glad I pulled it off well enough for it to stand out in a good way. Thanks for taking the time to listen.

thank god last years almost gone &mdash 12/30/06 - 02:09:44 PM
had a year like this 3 years ago. everything went, my mom, grandmother 4 friends and a cat and adios to the fiancee. seems like every year seems to bring the unexpected to cope with. but i'm enjoying life in despite of it all. i'm going to remember this song at the end of every year. cool beginning. and a positive music bed. great harmonies and guitar work. tomorrow always looks brighter in my book. great stuff as always. hope you have a good and happy new year! You know what they say.... &mdash 01/02/07 - 06:26:16 PM
...You should let a little sunshine into your life every day, because a day without sunshine is like.....night. (Apologies to Steve Martin.)
As you seem to well know, when you have a bad year, you just have to keep moving forward and do the best you can. I'm glad you found some enjoyment in the tune. Thanks for dropping in and I appreciate you taking the time to comment.

The hurt and the thrills of time past and gone &mdash 12/30/06 - 06:03:13 PM
This song is symbolic in so many ways, not just saying goodbye to a passing year but also looking forward to another sunrise in the morning after the darkness of the night. Is is an analogy of all the challenges and harhsips we go through in our life, loss of a loved one, failures in our endeavors, pain and illness... we go through them and look forward to another fresh start. But life is not just about the hard times as we look back... we also count the ownderful blessings we had. We hope to have had more of the good than the bad.
Anyway, enough of my philosophical musings. This is a very good listen and puts me in a sentimental mood. It is musically very appealing and although the phrase "time to say goodbye" is a little repetitive in the end, it is quite effective in that it brings home the message of past, present and future, and represents failures, joys and hope. Your vocals are full of emotion and very heartfelt and sincere.
Here's wishing you a bright year ahead, as well as for all Macjammers!

Here's to a fresh start &mdash 01/02/07 - 06:31:47 PM
I had to say goodbye to a lot of things in 2006, more than briefly mentioned here. But the good thing about saying goodbye to the bad times is that it leave you open for the good times ahead and that's exactly what I'm looking for. And any time someone with a voice like yours can say something positive about my vocals well, that counts as a pretty good time. (If any of you reading this have not taken a listen to Leon's work, do it NOW!)
Thanks for your comments and thanks for your support. Here's to a lot of great times and great music for us all in 2007.

This a great tune! &mdash 12/31/06 - 12:58:13 AM
Even though I seem to have better and better years, it's always time to say goodbye to the year, at years end. I'm always ready to move on to the next one.
Nice harmonies and melodies here, w/ a bit of some cool drum action. Also, your words summed everything up quite perfectly, Jg. Great writing. And you are one of my all-time fav vocalist here JG, so it's a double goodie for me! - It seems that you don't wanna stop evolving...
And I know that you've just gotta be ready to move on buddy... But I have to tell ya JG, that it's been the kindness of people like yourself, who've made my year lean toward the 'gooder' side of things...
It's hard to imagine how you upheld such grace, while still hangn' out here w/ your fav's to be so consistently supportive.
You're a good man, JG - Thanks for being who you are.
Here's to a better year for you, and to the rest of us too!

Movin' on up &mdash 01/02/07 - 06:41:19 PM
You know, I could say the same thing about support from folks like you being a real positive spot in my year. In fact, I will say that. I appreciate all your support both on and off MacJams during the past year, my friend. More than anything, I appreciate you taking the time to collaborate with me. It was a thrill to hear what both you and Ed came up with.
Thanks for everything, And here's to a great year for us all in 2007 (and maybe even another collab..... hint, hint, hint.....)

Nice one Joseph &mdash 12/31/06 - 04:34:39 AM
.. is that a touch of Mike Scott and "the Waterboys" I can hear in there? I could hear you doing "the whole of the moon" ..something in the style of some lines you sang. Great vocal work, nice use of the fade-out and a great composition. [ Reply to This ]
Thanks Alan &mdash 01/02/07 - 06:43:38 PM
I only have one Wateroys album from back in the 90s (can't remember the name of it) but it's great stuff. Thanks for the comparision. I appreciate you taking the time to listen and comment.

Man &mdash 12/31/06 - 02:38:55 PM
I can see why you're eager to see it go. I love how this song works on many levels, not only as a way of saying "good riddance" but also as a poignant way of saying goodbye. You could've gone with bitter, but instead have taken a more hopeful approach. Beautiful harmonies, the arrangement is spot-on and the song chugs along like the nature of time itself and is just the right length. All in all - it's very REAL - and as much as it was probably cathartic for you, it still allows itself to be embraced as a song of promise, which I think says a lot about your mindset at this stage in the game.
I just finished a book this morning called "White Noise" by Don DeLillo, published by Penguin Books in 1985 and winner of the National Book Award that year. If you can get a copy, I think you'd truly, truly appreciate it to the fullest. And if you Google it and run across Wikipedia or anything like that, try to avoid the spoilers. It has become one of my favorite books of all time. There is healing in laughter, especially when the comedy is mined from painful truth.
Great song! It's not lost on me just how much you opened yourself up with this one. [ Reply to This ]
Very cathartic &mdash 01/02/07 - 06:57:57 PM
One of the things that has really helped me is to be able to put a lot of what has been happening to me into my music, including some very dark tunes which will never see the light of day. But this more than any one has helped me let go and let me allow myself just a little gleem of hope for the future. I'm hoping 2007 will see me submitting a bunch of cheesy "luv" songs. :)
I've looked up the book you mentioned and it sounds right up my alley. I'm definitely going to find it and give it a read.
I appreciate you taking the time to stop in, listen and comment. Thanks for all your support.

This song hit me where it hurts... &mdash 12/31/06 - 10:21:45 PM
...2006 was rough for me too friend. Two automobile accidents and the loss of my mother after a lingering mystery illness. You really capture the need to let go and move on. Tonite at midnight I will think of this tune and your hard year and mine. We can let go of them together!
Happy New Year and by all means...be well!

It might have sucked Joseph .... &mdash 01/01/07 - 07:24:08 AM
... but man you sure made some good music. Definitely a candidate for the MJ improver's award - both vocally and writing. I hope the strength you've found in your voice is reflected in your life in 2007.
Peace, and have an excellent 2007.

It's folks like you here at MJ who have really been a big encouragement to me to continue to work and to improve. My music is one of the things that helped me get through the rough parts and is helping me look forward toward the good things ahead. I hope you have a great year ahead of you as well, Neil.

Great message and performance &mdash 01/02/07 - 08:25:49 PM
This is very, very good all through. Great message, great song, great performance and mixing. I can only agree Jiguma; you've really, really improved over the past year, and especially on the vocal parts. This is sung and arranged so good. Been there the past year as well, the context of the song is right up my alley. But, let's make 07 kick ass. I must have been naughty, because Santa did not bring any 5-string bass to me, or any other bass for that matter, not even a bass string! ;) Again, this is a very, very good composition. /Mikki [ Reply to This ]
I know it's been a tough year... &mdash 01/03/07 - 11:04:55 AM
.... but you're right, Mikki, we're going to take 2007 with a vengence. And I'm glad to see new music coming from you here to start the new year. That's awesome! You've been really encouraging me and supporting me here at MJ from way back in the early days and have given me lots of great input on how to improve over the past couple of years. I really appreciate it.
And, BTW, Santa wasn't intending to bring me a bass, but he was rummaging through the local music store and found a really good bargin. It's not because I was a really good boy this year or anything like that. :)
