Description:
I started this after the 7/7/05 bombings in London but all I had was the chorus of "Bitter Season". It wasn't until a guy in Baltimore gave me some lyrics a year later that it all started to come together. This was originally recorded on a Zoom hard disk recorder and I remixed it in GB.

I sang and played all the instruments. No loops (except drums) were harmed in the making of this song :)

Lyrics:
Bitter Season © The Cracks / Dick Langford 2006

Love lost and hearts grow weak
Lives tossed, take the chaff from the wheat
Hopes fade as the bodies break
Truth greys, it's the game that we play

In this bitter season - dreams wither on the vine
Bitter season - There's fire in the sky
Bitter season - We got to find a better reason to die

Hatred, I hear it all around
Hatred, I hate that bloody sound

Bones crack and the blood will run
Skewed facts seem to block out the sun
Sweet lies whispered by the crass
Soft flesh ripped by shattered glass

In this bitter season - God's not on any side
Bitter season - the devil's on the rise
Bitter season - we've got to find a better reason to die

Tears fall but the land is parched
Men crawl while the armies march
Don't try 'cos you can't pretend
There is something left that we can defend

In this bitter season - pity souls that cry
Bitter season - let history decide
Bitter season - we've got to find a better reason to die

Love lost...and found! &mdash 12/31/06 - 01:05:00 PM
Hi Dick
I like this.
As we know there has always been hatred in the world, but the darkness will never put out the light.
Nice one!

Good song. Tough message, timely. The guitar solo sounds great. I'm not sure what a zoom hard disk recorder is, but the current mix sounds polished.

ps when's the next amok installment?

Great stuff Dick. Love the gritty git tone throughout. Sung with conviction. An instant fave. This one makes an excellent sister tune to my anti-WARfare state tune:

Thanks to all &mdash 01/01/07 - 03:33:18 PM
This song meant a lot to me when I did it. I was so fired up by how much hatred there was. Someone hated us enough to blow themselves up in crowded tube trains and then the hatred shown towards to Muslims after the bombing in London. Maybe I was too close to it but for some reason I just couldn't get any lyrics other than "Bitter Season" so I was really pleased with the lyrics my Baltimore collaborator came up with. It reached 37 out of 300 on Neil Young's antiwar website.

My normal stuff is very political so the rock opera is a bit of a side project (next instalment in a week or so when Al Jolson learns the tango).

Thanks for your support and comments.

Cheers

Dick

ps Amagi - just about to check out your song

very nice! &mdash 01/02/07 - 10:28:43 PM
I was at Kings Cross just 2 weeks prior to the bombings and remember passing by the British Medical Association building where the bus bomb went off. I mourned with Brittain that day. Certainly agree with the theme and the melody is catchy. thank you.

Gritty &mdash 01/21/07 - 02:45:01 PM
Dick - always a fan of your work - this is a big, gritty rocker, with a fabulous guitar running through it -I like the other touches that come in as the track progresses. Only quibble - the drums don't do anything for this - they are either a little to loud or not EQ'd quite right ... and the beat is a little too monotonous. I'd really like to hear this with different drums, and some cymbols to accent things.
