Description
I'm taking what is for me a different approach in writing a song. Rather than diving in and writing from front to back I'm attempting to lay out the entire song structure with basic instruments first. This file is the state of the effort to date.

The style I'm aiming at for the song is something along the lines of Nine Inch Nail's "The Great Below." The song is in F# harmonic minor and alternates between 5/4 and 3/4 meter.

I could use some advice or collaboration help from someone with strong composition skills, as I'm really stretching myself thin in trying to write "musically."

The file is in Logic Express and uses basic synths, so it should be easy to trade. I think I can even export midi files that could be imported into other applications - so you needn't be a Logic user.

NOTE: There is a rather lengthy intro section in this version. The composition starts at 60 seconds into the song.

some suggestions...
Brian,
Perhaps you could introduce the kick after the first synth has established its theme a little later, say, after 2 or 3 times its theme has been established. Also, at this point, the kick might play the first beat only of each measure for the remainder of the intro & THEN letting it rip once the 2nd synth enters?
I'm thinking that this might be a way of giving extra impact in establishing the mood of the piece over time by giving each entering voice time to establish its' own identity...

I hope this makes sense!...I've re-typed this about 20 times now, & I'm still not sure if I've clearly conveyed what I mean!

Nice piece, you know it kind of reminds me of John Barry's film scoring in some of the 007 movies of the 60s! (Especially the underwater scenes!)

Thanks - that's exactly the sort of comment I'm looking for!

Chikoppi here. I've created this alternate profile for a "song journal" project begun in the forums (see: "Song Journal?"). I thought it would be interesting to publicly document the process of creating a song, beginning to end, complete with audi... [see more]
