Lyrics
Freak
©2005 Philip VanDusen

In your eyes no one knows
All the truth that you expose
And all our mess
They stick like glue
They hide the facts that frighten you

I’m the freak and you’re the pill
Swallow me down, you’ll never drown

Move my mouth in the crowd
Don’t blend in, stand and be proud
These are things I’ve been taught
Always in dreams I’ve been caught
Never perfect
Try to be
Never worth it
Never me
Never me

I’m the freak

it's funny...
...you thought I might like this one the most, but I like it the least of the three you just posted. It's not bad, but it just seems a little overly melodramatic. I think the vocal delivery seems dated as well (especially near the end). Ha! It's my harshest crit of one of your tunes yet!!! Don't take it the wrong way!!!

melodrama
Stun,
We try to coat our stuff with a heaping helping of sarcasm and irony sometimes. This is one of those times....No offense taken at all!. I prefer critique to ego-stoking any day.

a marching rocker. maybe a bit to much reverb in spots, vocals noticably. some great grinding guitars.

3/3
Like Stan, probably my least favourite of the 3. I'd like to hear this one stripped down more, especially on the vocal effects. HOWEVER, once you move into the chorus it seems to work in a 70s kind of way (think The Family). I'd really like to see/hear this live though :)

Freak
I liked the intro guitar a lot, but the melody and vocal didn't live up to the promise of the beginning. Great production though.

Jiguma may be on to something. After the electric intro it might have been interesting to have switched to an acoustic guitar and then reave it back up on the chorus and through to the ending.

Just a thought.

Monk & Jiguma
I like this idea. I may try a remix sometime. It is a little myopic and jam-band-y. Thanks for the input. I'll have to give you guys a Producer cred!

Irony
Maybe it's just me, but I hear a lot of irony in this one: turgid guitars, moaning vocal. Kind of a winking nod to "classic Deep Purple". (That synth isn't from the period, though....) Kind of a slow, self indulgent wallow. I like it!

Pronouns
Very solid writing and arranging. In my ears the vocal reverb was a tad too much, I prefer a more intimate in your face feel for this sort of mainstream rock. And, altho it is a personal thing with me, you seem to mix up pronouns as if they are all referring to the same thing [your eyes, our mess, my mouth] when it might be stronger if you stuck with a solid point of perspective [my eyes, I expose, our mess, frighten you]. I dig the tune.

Tobin
This is kind of a trippy wash of a painting I think. Complete with over-the-top reverb. I like to play wearing different genre hats, if you know what I mean.

Admidedly the lyrics are all over the map--pronouns wise. But I LOVE the fact that you noticed that! My Dad was a newspaper editor and english teacher and reading this songs would have him pulling out his hair!

Releasing in threes...
does lead to internal rating conflicts - and I'm kinda with Stun Nutz on this one. It's got a good beat and it's easy to dance too - but it doesn't grab me like the other two - which is faint damnation given the overall excellence of your output.

What would happin if...
Jack Bruce wound up singing in Iron Butterfly and they all made it into 2007? It might sound something like this. That's a compliment, my friend. :)

Freaked
So you've always been great at production, i see. this is great - wonderful, draggy tempo gives this a real slow groove. The guitars are raw, the voacls ragged and impassioned, and a kick-arse chorus to boot. love the silky keyboards - really counteracts with the guitar.

Great tracked, sadly overlooked.

overlooked
Thanks for taking a scan through my old catalog. I agree. I really like this song. It's kinda spacey and trippy, but the lack of the real driving beat sends some walking before they get into it I'm afraid. I'll have to return the favor and give our "lost leaders" a listen as well.
cheers,
P
