Description:
Matt M. calls this one "very happy-dance-y-flower-picky". I think that about sums it up. Vocals and lyrics by Matt M., everything else is me.
Lyrics:
I’m So High
©2006 Matt Meyer
How could you see
The things my soul had missing
You redeemed it
How did you know
That this was exactly what I needed
And how could you see
The things my soul had missing
You redeemed it
I’m so high
It’s just the sunshine
In my
Incandescent sometime
Is this at last
The life that was designed to wrap around me
Can this be so
A happiness refined to wind around me
I’m so high
Oh, did you know
That this is exactly what
Just what
My soul had missing

Now, you're talking...! &mdash 01/02/07 - 11:34:06 PM
This song is chock full of musical treats!! It reminds me a little of XTC (a good thing, in my book). Love the rolling bass line, the sprinkly guitar, the bouncy nature of the drums and rhythm guitar... and the soaring vocals. Oh, and I forgot to mention the solid production with the little surprises and transitions along the way. Great work, guys. [ Reply to This ]
XTC &mdash 01/03/07 - 08:48:22 PM
Thanks StunNutz,
XTC is one of my favorite bands EVER. High praise in my book.

dig it &mdash 01/03/07 - 12:17:48 AM
Lots of tasty things going on as this unfolds. Great vocals. THey project relly well and are expressive. The guitar licks are fun and colorful and the electronic bass and other touches give it a stoney afterglow. Really quite cool. [ Reply to This ]

What a treat. Ditto all the great stuff everybody else said. Love the bass line. Moody bluesish. The Early moodies. The guitar at the chorus is such a great sound('Grace Land'-ish). and Nice vocals. Great lyric. The high is my choice... you left it open to interpritation. Perfect.Almost holy... at the intro.
Amen

Yeah, Matt has a nice way of doing some very interesting accapella things. I think he would have been a great Gregorian monk in the olden days....hey! maybe he was re-incarnated!

Congratulations! &mdash 01/03/07 - 02:19:49 AM
Shades of Gentle Giant - one of my favourite bands - especially in the intro and the break. Fantastic sounds on the guitars and synth. Drums and bass work really well together. Vocals and lyrics "just right".
Again, excellent production on a really good song.

Great Playing &mdash 01/03/07 - 02:25:51 AM
Reminds me a little of The Beta Band who remind me of the Moody Blues.
Production and rhythm track is very good. The instruments selected fit in well and played expertly. [ Reply to This ]
Dude, you rock... &mdash 01/03/07 - 02:42:19 AM
Help me here.. there is a cross of Peter Gabriel and Steve Winwood in your vocal quality and style. I can imagine this being even more electrifying in a live performance! You're right. Of the three songs you posted today, this stands "high"-er on my preference. I gotta give your other songs a second listen though. Thumbs up on production/instrument play on this but I give the highest marks to your vocals! [ Reply to This ]
Hi... &mdash 01/03/07 - 05:23:14 AM
This is my fave of the 3 songs you posted... Great music and ideas... and good production... Well done... [ Reply to This ]
I'm So High &mdash 01/03/07 - 06:42:45 AM
Wow, I wasn't expecting this, Philip. This is grand music and kudos to Matt on the vocals and lyrics. BTW, since folks are making comparisons, I hear a little Eddie Vedder in Matt's voice.
This is one of the better songs at this site. Bravo, both of you. [ Reply to This ]
Nice interwoven vocals and upbeat feel &mdash 01/03/07 - 09:56:25 AM
I really dig the body of this tune, starting with the "I'm so high" section" - the guitar phrases and inter-folding vocals especially. However, the intro is not as compelling (not just the in-the-can effects, but the lack of energy I felt), nor is the ending as strong as I had anticipated. It retains a south african sense that works throughout. I really dig the song art, too. I like the layers and their separations, but I felt like the "band" misses some chord changes and/or chances to create chord substitutions that would make the overall music bed more interesting. Nice track, overall. [ Reply to This ]
Beginnings and endings &mdash 01/03/07 - 08:56:23 PM
Hey Tobin,
Thanks for the critique. Right-on as usual. I am a sucker for Matt's accapella stuff, so I had to throw it in. It was actually tracked as a harmony in the middle of the song, but I pulled it out to use as an intro. The endings are always my failing. I don't actually "write" songs per-se. I contruct them piece by piece like a painting adding layers and letting it become what it wants to be. So I therefore never pre-conceive how the thing will end. I guess you can tell....

Just off-kilter &mdash 01/03/07 - 01:38:17 PM
Goddamn, why has it taken me so long to listen to you?! This is a great track, grrreat drums and lots of really interesting textures. It's catchy, but a little bit 'off' which makes it 100x more interesting. the production on this is excellent RR.
Egobandit is spot on - everyone should be listening to you.
Really pleased to meetcha!

this was exactly what I needed &mdash 01/03/07 - 08:19:14 PM
great post... wonderful textured, playful, eliptical lyrics.. mysterious and drawing us in.. the vocal is very good(exellent performance) and yet the song is not about your vocal... it's just one element in an intricately woven colorful tapestry

Scott &mdash 01/03/07 - 09:13:27 PM
Hi Scott, Thanks for stopping in. I just listened to your song "My Hope" nice stuff, your acoustic guitar tone is fab! Plus you have some nice pipes there dude. "Inspirational" music is not usually my thing, (you can probably tell by all the cursing in my songs...) but your stuff is cool. Keep comin' back!

Alright, now we're talkin head tweakin &mdash 01/03/07 - 11:09:27 PM
very cool folk/baroque production - almost too tasty but you keep it real - very impressive and fun at the same time - it's got a good nose, full body and great legs. Ever hear Trip Skakespeare? I think Matt would dig them - you too prolly. Great tune. [ Reply to This ]
trip &mdash 01/05/07 - 02:23:53 AM
Hey Bud, Of course you know who Trip Shakespeare is...why wouldn't you.. (and yes, I do too)..they have this song "A Drummer like Me", that is great...I've always wanted to cover it.

Another Top Notch Production &mdash 01/03/07 - 11:48:23 PM
Matt's got a fine, fine voice. I thought the bass was a little over powering. Loved the acoustic guitar noodling. [ Reply to This ]
You're right &mdash 01/04/07 - 03:05:55 AM
While not yet listening your other songs (really busy at the moment), I love this one. Joining my voice to Ego : everybody should listen at you ! I will listen your other stuff late tonight or soon tomorrow morning. Great song mate. An Happy New Year, if I did'nt said it allready. [ Reply to This ]
great driving drum sound &mdash 01/04/07 - 08:58:29 AM
nicely structured song. I find some of the lead guitar lines a bit loud/distracting in the mix, but it could be because I'm listening through crappy speakers. Very polished and professional sounding piece.

This may be a little too cheerful for my taste, but that doesn't take away from the awesome production on this jam. I love the way the song changes on the "Im so high" part.
So it that a group of guys singing or just one guy re-recording the vocals? [ Reply to This ]
overdubs &mdash 01/07/07 - 02:28:44 PM
Thanks. The vocals are overdubs of the same person with different EQ settings.

Wow. Another one. &mdash 01/09/07 - 08:36:43 AM
I love this.
Mines a piece of that Matthew Sweet/Richard Lloyd territory, to my ears. Really tight. I love everything. Let's run it down. Drum sound is perfect for the sound, especially with that bit of tambourine in the right channel, and the drum playing is perfectly suited to the song. The bass playing is melodic but supportive.
I LOVE the guitars, and I love the vocals. Reminds me of an extrapolation of 'Rain'-era Beatles...
Into the iPod she goes, and gratefully.

I worked a long time on this one, and judging my the feedback, it shows. A lot of my stuff is very off the cuff and it is nice to know when I put in the hours sometimes I actually get something worthwhile....Ciao

Very cool sound here. I'm really dign' this! Listening on a pretty sad system, (so can't say much about the quality) but the brilliance of this sound comes through. Very unique w/ a timeless groove.
Love the feeling of this. - Really.
Thanks! Macca

Walking in Reverse &mdash 01/11/07 - 02:13:23 AM
So many good songs being posted on here as of lately... You'be been kind enough to both listen and make comments on my latest songs (much appreciated)... This is the first song I am listenting to from you, and it's a positive surprise (although somewhat late in the game). This is a nice song, and a very good production. Awesome performance and vocals. I just love the guitar(s), very welled played and recorded/mixed. This is a song that is going to grow on me after a few more listenings. DL'd. /Mikki
P.S. Now I am going backward unto your earlier postings. [ Reply to This ]

"Flower-power-with-attitude" is what I'd call it. Good juxtaposition of floating guitars & driving drum-track. Nice vox. [ Reply to This ]
