Thanks The drums, to me are the weakest point. I was focusing this time on my fretwork rather than my drum programming, so loops it was for this one. The high hat was nearly impossible to tame, but c'est la vie. What do you reckon? I have a proposition for you, if you are interested. I am a drummer/teacher in Australia, and I am always looking for good grooves for my students to play along with. The groove is great, it just needs to be played by a drummer. The first thing that struck me is how hard it kicks, and I could kick it further. I have a studio for my kit (Pearl Materworks, Zildjians) and am running good mics thru a Firepod into Logic Express. I would love to record some drums for your track if you let me use the track as a playalong for my students. If you're into it, we can sort out details shortly, as I have a really busy 3 weeks of playing coming, but after that I want to lay some stuff down as i have only recently got my Firepod. I'll record them and send them back to you for mixing. What do you reckon? |

Ha! I could hear on the first riff I was going to like this. It's very playful, nice bridge's and arrangements. Very well played guitar, impressive! Lot's of different influences here. Sounds like ....... ..... you know your way around that fretboard! Fantastic guitar work, and great grumbling bass. Yeah! Brilliant guitar playing. You really got a wall of guitar there. The funky guitar part that comes up in the middle is a fun counter to the other parts. Models For the beginning guitars, it's all the Mesa models with varying degrees of gain. Mostly dry from Gearbox so that I can control effects later. The funky clean tone is the JazzChorus model and the lead tone in the middle of the song is the JCM800 model... I believe the patch was called "2 Hands, Big Hair". I did find that I needed to eq above 5k down throughout to control an aggressive bite and fizz that the sounds had. thanks really appreciate the input. I haven't had a lot of success getting a good tight sound with any of the Boogie models. Not sure why? You certainly have them working well. I like the Bogners and Diezels better - 2002 Uber Bomber is great IMO. The JCM versions are nice but lack a bit compared to the real amp. Thanks for the tip on EQ'ing too - I usually use a low pass filter at 12 kHz, that gets rid of a lot of the fizz... I'll have to try your way too. Hard funk potential I dig the funkiness. And your notes just outside the chord. Wonderful energy and clarity in the guitars. I love the harmonies on some of the lines. The drumming is much too repetitive in my ears, not engaging the other players with the same invention and power that the guitars are giving, providing nothing more than a looped beat, and one that didn't rise to the power or hardboiled funkiness of the guitar or create a visual of a band. It has more to do with the lack of fills and variation than their inherent sound. Still, really nice guitar playing. (Was the bass guitar MIDI?) I am eager to hear your work on Speak Truth to Power! Drums The only reason I didn't program drums for this one is that I didn't have a drum sound that suited the song. I'm gonna look at purchasing some drum samples soon and I may re-visit this song... Peter Greenstone offered some drumming, maybe I'll have to take him up on it. The bass, however is not MIDI. The bit between the teeth..... Man, the Vai and Satriani influence is all over this one. Some great shredding mate. Reminds me a lot of John Paul Jones solo stuff too. Well record and really meaty. great git playing! Your guitar playing is definitely showcased to maximum advantage on this blazing rock track. I do encourage you to freshen up the drum track with new samples and perhaps some more fills and change-ups. The recording and mixing of the guitars is excellent. Very nice, clear sound palette. Full without being overwhelming; a good balance between taste and power-punch. I particularly like the unexpected key-change and different chords just before the middle. This elevates the song from just "rock" to a more progressive slant. It's very refreshing to the ears, and adds a lot of interest. This song might benefit from some additional material at the end, like a much slower "cadenza" section with punctuated chords, sort of a last flourish. As is, this song is like a train running at a fairly fast speed, which suddenly hits the brick wall of a station and comes to an abrupt stop. Great work here, Darren! Accidentally caught your mention in the Chat... And recalled that I had liked your guitar playing in the context of a vocal song in the past... I'm blown away with this one. Darren, you're just awful good. This oughta be top of every MacJams chart. Certainly should be above my current offering... (Which I think is good, but I think this thing is stunning...) Well. Nice shootin' there, Tex! I'm sorry, but I can't figure out who your influences are there, because there's a whole lotta stuff goin' on - maybe a little Stevie Ray, but to me, this sounds totally original. That strange modulation over the bass line with the surf guitar - it teeters on the edge in a way that's totally energizing. Great groove, nice dynamics, excellent mix, killer fretwork. My only kvetch is that the software drums can't hold a candle to the volcanic action taking place everywhere else and still, they're well composed. Rock on, axe-slinger.
