Description:
My first serious try at blues since High School. Decided it's time to branch out. Lyrically, this one's for Amagi (may we someday get to jam).
Lyrics:
We live our life balanced on a knife-edge
Poised between the shadow and the light,
We’ll be sucked into a fetid swamp, or freeze as cold as ice
If we step out to the left or to the right.
Well the road between is narrow, as was seen so long ago
By a Man they killed for making it so clear,
When the “truth in love” He spoke about was perceived as such a threat
To the power those around Him held so dear.
You can cast away the truth and call it “freedom,”
Build our castles on the waves of stormy seas.
But a “freedom” built on lies is just a slave’s house in disguise.
Only truth embraced is truth that sets you free.
You can play your power games and deconstruct those of your foes
But unless you build on rock, the fall will be so bad.
Nietzsche shook his fist and claimed, “What doesn’t kill me makes me
stronger.”
But in the end it only drove him mad.
So our leaders make an art of propaganda,
And a science out of messing with our brain,
Never seeing that the end of their agenda
Is a culture that will slowly go insane.
(They’re coming to take me away, ha ha, hee hee, ho ho)
Will you come and walk with me upon this knife-edge,
Walk in freedom as the Children of the Day.
“If we lose our life, we’ll find it,” said the One who blazed our trail,
The One who is the truth, the life, the way.

Great stuff Thomas! Fantastic lyrics. More direct than most of my stuff. The TRUTH spoken in love. Really enjoy your passionate singing. Playing and production are lovely throughout. I am blown away my brother. Yes! Ring in the New Year! Deconstruct deconstructionism!
God bless!

It's so true: " Only truth embraced is truth that sets you free." We can talk the talk, but unless we live it, we are deceiving ourselves. Really nice guitar, vocals, and arrangement. Brsnching out is cool. :-) [ Reply to This ]

a nice blues &mdash 01/06/07 - 11:46:19 PM
great lyrics. the whole song has that "while my guitar gently weeps" kind of vibe. just don't accidentally cut yourself on bending those strings. :) [ Reply to This ]

A nice song with scent of classic. And lyrics providing food for thought.
Highly appreciated! [ Reply to This ]
Great stuff... &mdash 01/07/07 - 11:41:46 PM
Your vocals are out of sight... and that guitar cutting through the song is intoxicating. One of the best vocal blues on MJ, without a doubt.
Really liked the vox harmonies... that sells the song.... really well done. And you know I could never argue with the lyrics point of view... great metaphor... the knife's edge, the narrow path, and like a knife that cuts deep... "If we lose our life, we%u2019ll find it." Gets it down to the the daily call... the universal call - His knife's edge. [ Reply to This ]
yeah, this song is good &mdash 01/08/07 - 02:04:51 PM
True to yourself &mdash 01/08/07 - 02:24:00 PM
Great song, great guitar-playing, really great singing, and great lyrics that are well-crafted and I completely agree with, as would many from all razor-edge-walks of life, I bet. And although I liked your harmonizing singing, I wanted it to come in LATER on the lines where you started it partway in... to get more effect. For example, I think instead of singing "..or freeze as cold as ice", the harmony should just sing "cold as ice", and change "and call it freedom" to just sing "call it freedom"... for some reason I think this would give it even more punch. The wildly panning lead guitar was a little much in headphones, but not too bad. Those are my only critiques, other than that, this is super!

Re: True &mdash 01/08/07 - 02:48:13 PM
Thanks for the encouragement. Coming from one of your abilities it means a lot. I tend to agree about where to start the harmonies, but I wouldn't redo them yet. The original's too fresh. It was all just a spur-of-the-moment thing (All the lyrics composition came together in about 5 minutes and I sang the verses as I wrote them).
As for the pan, it was compromise. Less extreme pan muddied the middle with the other guitar part, so I settled on this. [ Reply to This ]

Good Writing &mdash 01/10/07 - 09:54:23 AM
opening verse chock full of good lyrics - excellent beginning. bluesy sound is great - cool note bending. altho this seems to have no chorus or bridge, it manages to hold my ear thru-out. nice job on the mix! anne [ Reply to This ]

Like this a lot. Good performance. I enjoy the lyrics a lot, as well as how they are performed. This is very good music throughout. Good message, honest, open-minded, and straight forward. I'm going to listen to you again. Thank you. /Mikki [ Reply to This ]

No doubt, &mdash 02/27/07 - 07:34:37 PM
You really said it with this one. I had to explain this in a university multi-religious class; I wish I had your song back then. Would have liked to hear that harmony on a refrain, but that's just my own glutony. Great sound, made better by the message. [ Reply to This ]

Excellent performance and production in this piece. The lyrics are potent too. Cool tune, reminds me of House of the Rising Sun in many ways.
