Description:
Bach On a Beer-Can

If you blow an empty beer-can just the way you'd blow a bottle, you can, with a bit of experimenting, find some quite nice organ-like sounds. This rendition is built upon such a sound.

This was done in 2000. I had a peroid (a happy one) when I was penciling music with the great app 'Melody Assistant'. This piece is JS Bachs Preludium in D minor, that he wrote for lute. Here penciled and somewhat jazzed and with a home-made beer-can-blowing sample. Apart from the drums, the only instrument is that sampled single beer-can-blow (including the bass).

Please excuse the drums .. I can't use the old Melody Assistant app anymore since my present Mac can not take OS9. So I'll have to stick with what I did back in 2000.

I had no intention of posting this one until the other day, when my nine year old son heard it and said is was "very very cool". Since I trust his musical ear and taste, I want to test in on you MacJammers too .. and of course, on a second consideration, I too can feel that it is a quite cool ..

In a previous post Honey Jar Bach is the same tune but with a sampled tapping-on-the-lid-of-a-honey-jar sound.

Hardware:
Some cheap old mic I don't remeber the name of
132 MHz PowerMac 7600

Software:
Melody Assistant
OS 9

Very cool, and again, a different path for you. I like experiments like this as well, and quite often use just about anything to create new sounds. It's surprising how much a Big Band one can get from one kitchen for example. I thoght the drums where a little bit annoying at first, but after a few listening, they actually adds a very interesting contrast to Bach and the beer bottle. /Mikki

Very very interesting &mdash 01/08/07 - 05:14:22 PM
Was it just me, or was there no guitar being featured in this - Is it time for me to throw away my expectations... Well, I'd just alter them a bit maybe... It seems that I can still expect an intriquing musical exploration from you, and regardless of instrumentation - That figures...

Thanks for the ride. Pretty cool!

Macca

ps - Did they have beer back then??? heheee

LOL &mdash 01/08/07 - 05:41:35 PM
LOL .. well, they certainly had beer .. but aluminum cans .. eh .. let me think ..

--------------------
Anyway, more seriously, and interesting, this is what I found on Wikipedia: Beer is one of the oldest human-produced beverages, possibly dating back to at least the 7th millennium BC (perhaps prior even to bread) .. etc

You can make music from anything, Curry! I really didn't know aluminium cans could sound like that, now I'll have to try some experimentation of my own. Your son is right, very cool!

You are a very creative dude. The drums are not my favorite part, but they do add a kind of manic slapstick quality to it all. The beer can sample, however, is just wonderful.

Yes the drums has something in its simplicity. With some editing and better mixing they would be actually qite nice. Thank you for stopping by Clark!

Why we should listen to our children more &mdash 01/08/07 - 10:05:37 PM
They have the gift of not over-thinking things. This is indeed very, very cool!

Yes &mdash 01/09/07 - 05:11:04 AM
Yes I second that '.. we should listen to our children more' .. Maybe a statement that doesn't sound very radical, but at deeper consideration something that would make revolution (a good one) when put to practice..

Bock beer! &mdash 01/08/07 - 10:30:24 PM
I found this definition:
Bock is a style of lager beer which originated in Germany. It was
traditionally brewed in the fall, at the end of the growing season,
when barley and hops were at their peak. It was "lagered" all winter
and enjoyed in the spring at the beginning of the new brewing season.
Bocks can be pale (helles) or dark (dunkles) and there are
double(doppel) bocks which are extra strong.

Oh wait ... wrong spelling of Bach...sorry!

I'm surprised that you haven't purchases a glass harmonica yet...

Your son is right...

Bach on a beer-can, huh? &mdash 01/09/07 - 12:03:25 PM
What's next?
Schubert on a shoebox?
Strauss through a straw?
Hndel on a door handle? (hollowed out, of course)

Well - I'm sure it wouldn't take you long to fulfill those requests - being as musical as you are!

It also sounds very cool. Now, can you do a live version on David Letterman if I drain a case of Budweiser and give you the cans?

Thanks for posting this--real fun!

It took me awhile &mdash 01/18/07 - 11:27:00 PM
to get around to this... Do you have to drink a lot of beer to keep those cans tuned... :) I'm loving it that you find music in other places even though the obvious place for you to look is at your fingers on strings...

Johannes Curry you're a great man... I'm glad to be knowing you

Mr. Bach Would be Proud &mdash 01/19/07 - 08:25:45 PM
And just think: you can now say that you've improved upon the glass harmonica that, I think, Mozart loved so much.

Just imagine all those rows of spinning beer cans...

Very cool piece. I'm going to check some more of your stuff out.

Original and interesting. &mdash 01/29/07 - 01:00:33 AM
I am always amazed at Bach's music. It adapts and thrives with experimentation and different techniques and styles, whether is 21st Century sounds, or an old can of beer. I collect this kind of music and this one is a download. Greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I love the sound! &mdash 01/29/07 - 11:21:51 AM
What a great idea, and it absolutely works! The drums are well done, not sure if the piece would have even more effect with just the beer can sound alone (yeah, I really like that sound...). Now what would I have to do to get you to send me that sound? I'd really be interested in using it, if you don't mind...
How about using the beer can with your guitar playing? I'm a big fan of your music and that would be an original track, I'm sure!
