Description

My daughter and her husband just bought this amazing block of land just 20 minutes from us - fantastic news considering she's 6 hours drive away at the moment! This song was inspired after a visit to the block last Saturday - 15 acres of basalt soil with beautiful views of mountain and ocean.
It's all me - except the Drums on Demand drums - a little bit of a country tinge to this (and also a little bit of "Black Books" in the theme).

It really was a joyous occasion to some day soon have our little family back together again - and for our granddaughter to be able to go to school locally (where her mum and dad went). The land is really magnificent (and so cheap by today's standards) - if I was 10 years younger, I'd buy a block up there myself. I had a lot of fun with this - a very quick turnaround, even for me.

On doing the repetitive bits at the end, it just seemed like the obvious title for the song. Thanks for the listen Ed - it's a little like some of my earlier songs, and was fun to do because I didn't take weeks labouring over it (I suspect the weeks labouring will happen when they start building!).

Nice guitar playing.. You have got the hang of that tele for sure. Right in the pocket performance for a country-rock kind of song.

The acoustic is also well played. It's well done to keep it so strict and simple to the rhythm, and let it be a part of the perc as well as an instrument playing chords.

I'm not sure if the locomotive drum pattern did the tune a favor. I feel it steals my attention to much so that your performance gets a bit pushed down in its way. I think loops like that often make you play on their conditions, and not vice versa. It may be that I feel like this 'cause you made them start the song and sort of take control of the song from the start.

That said, I know how tempting it is to use a good groovin' pattern like this one.

I was unsure about the drums too, and even though there are a few little changes in there, I felt in the end like it worked OK for the style - probably even more varied than a rockabilly drummer might do : ) I haven't really done this "Ozabilly" thing before, so it was all a bit of fun really. Maybe with more time I might have sorted out a better drum track - maybe I will later. The Tele just seems to work - almost without me telling it what to do. It's a little scary at times when things come out better than I'd expected. Still having lots of fun though.

I first played this one on my new iMac at work through the internal speakers, and I thought that it may not be fair to comment without listening through some decent speakers. So now I did:)
And there is a noticeable difference. The drums seems much more blended in than I heard at first. I guess those internal speakers are to harsh to really give a good impression. Sorry mate. Next time I'll listen with proper gear.

Now I think about it ......... I guess it could relate to your situation as well (as an aside: why don't we have an English equivalent to the German "Sie" to denote plural "you"?).
As I mentioned to you today Alf, this was written and recorded in maybe a day, and I suspect the joy I was feeling hadn't been beaten out in the usual long, involved recording process.

I've always looked at things in life obliquely (I'm a Cancer if you're into that sort of thing, which some say explains a lot), and have finally found a situation (songwriting) where obliqueness is an asset rather than a concern. Rockabilly has always fascinated me, but then these days, all sorts of music fascinates me (although currently I draw the line this side of rap music, which I really just don't get). Thanks for your ongoing support - one of the reasons I write this stuff is the enjoyment of getting your responses.

This is such a terrific tune - more catchy than a cold in a British winter! Your husky vocal delivery is perfect for this number and I really enjoyed your guitar work (has a bit of a rockabilly feel) particularly love that long clipped guitar line near the end.

. and a catchy one too- got to be one of my favourites of yours. Like others have mentioned: the tele playing is great- I wouldn't mind hearing the occasional more prominent lead tremeloed strums like at the start from time to time along with the more rhythmic pattern or even a touch of slide?? The drums: perhaps a little work (perhaps the occassional quick dead stop even starting the verses just leaving the guitar and singing and use the fill mid verse??): but mainly I think the issue is in the mixing of the stereo loop (I assume you used here repeated), the repeating double snare is just too noticeable for most of the verses- (thus distracting) it's ok in the intro in fact (on 3rd listen) at least on my monitors (I see it's less on hi-fi speakers from Thor's comment), even for ozzabilly.. for total control you could make the drum pattern up as individual tracks but first you might try softening the snare with mid EQ in the verses and bring it up for fills, where they could be louder (creates that laid back, oh now it's my Q type thing).. OR, go for a single snare instead - just using the double pattern for intro and under solo. I also think a female high harmony in the chorus'("Take a seat ..) - there's room - The bass is tight & solid and driving but might be smidge too high in the mix. Just me thoughts- I really liked this. Oh, and I miss a decent hill/mountain round here- too flat, woods are cool though.

To be honest, I didn't take much time on this as I wasn't really sure it merited the effort, however now that it's got such a good response I regret it a little. I'll do a remix using your suggestions (which all seem spot on after another listen) - my wife Jan was keen to do a top harmony, but as I was moving quickly, I declined.

	You could make a mint Neil, this is great - you have such a way with a refrain and are deadly with a hook. Though the drums may reflect a bit of country nature, this just screams "cross-over" and I can hear it as part of a film soundtrack, or better still, as the theme for a Travel Channel series. What a gosh darn good song! Wowzer! Did someone already mention the Simon & Garfunkel similarity? Melodically, it smacked me over the head and left me stunned. Lyrically, it had me pressing my headphones a little closer to my ears (turn the vox up a bit in the mix and clear them slightly!). That, and I'm completely immersed in the words. Rythmically, I was smiling for the duration of the tune. It's just chuggin' along most deliciously.

Maybe I'm just a bass junkie, but on my headphones, the bass levels seem to be lacking a bit. Also sounds pretty mid-heavy. It could be the mp3 compression, but I think this needs a bit of instrumental separation as it sounds just slightly too blended. Does that make sense? I'm so sorry if I'm overstepping my place here and these are such minor things to me. There's something about the raw production that really lends itself well to the content and delivery. Really, I'm totally impressed. Downloading & Fav'ing immediately.

Hi Miss C - I really appreciate this sort of comment. I've been listening to this a lot (as you do) lately, and I've come to notice some of the things you've mentioned. In fact I'm currently doing a remix, taking on board comments, especially from apb and thoddi.

Alan (apb)'s comment about the bass kind of negates yours I guess - I mix in 'phones (I know, not ideal), and the bass sounds a little soft to me too (I always try to compensate for what I know will be a loud bass in monitors). I think Alan listens on monitors where it sounds bass heavy - now that's complicated :) Maybe a mix for 'phones and another for monitors??

I'm with you on the vox level and clarity - currently each of the three vocals has an echo track. Maybe that's excessive. The mid heaviness may come from the Tele tracks - I suspect I have one more than necessary here.

I really enjoyed doing this from a rhythmic point of view - for me there are three different rhythm/melody things happening together (vocal melody, bass/drums/acoustic and the rockabilly Tele), which makes it interesting.

Thanks again for the comment - remix maybe next week (but don't hold your breath!).

Really great country rhythm that is a head shaker and foot tapper for sure. This song makes me imagine wind blowing through my hair, driving an open convertible through a country scenery. Refreshing and invigorating.
