Guitars, they are great. This song has such a great feel to it. I really like the vocals as well, especially the harmonies. You should post the lyrics, I like reading along as I listen.

Great job and welcome to MacJams with your first tune!

exellent &mdash 01/12/07 - 03:37:56 PM
I agree with MG... I'd like to read the lyrics.. I think you may get some R.E.M. comparisons... that's a good thing... this is wonderfully sparce and minimal... If this is your first attempt, then I'm surprised... you have put together a very musical post... almost always someones maiden voyage into this software music world, ends up sounding like an experiment with sound... this sounds like a song... as if you have something to share, and music is just the vehicle... that's one reason I'd like to see the lyrics... the song really starts there for me

great job; Scott

Thanks for the responses. I've been recording for a while now--on a zip disk digital 8-track. Really limited. Garageband's really opened things up. Songs like this were on hold because I couldn't record it like I wanted, especially the second half. Now I can record piano and everything else. Garageband just rules.

I'll think about getting the lyrics up here, but I'm not 100% sold on these lyrics. Lyrics are always the thing that come last for me.

eh squier? &mdash 01/13/07 - 02:15:17 AM
The guitars have a really nice tone. That's a Squier for ya. I like the choice of putting the drums 75% into the right channel. Was listening to some Beatles the other day. They did that all the time. Creates a great tonal separation. Great first effort. You production values are great for just getting into the computer. Nice harmonies.

Beatles &mdash 01/16/07 - 05:19:11 PM
Definitely took my cue from the Beatles on left/right balance. Thanks for that. Listening to any Beatles record in one speaker is an amazing experience. Still don't understand how they recorded Sgt. Pepper on a 4-track.

Song good, intro bad. &mdash 01/14/07 - 07:32:55 PM
Well, bad.....

This is a pretty solid song. Good writing, good production. It's a bit strange that that piano comes in at the end, and as pianos go it's not a particularly good sounding one: your guitars are much better as instruments. Personally I would have tried doing something with a diffreent guitar sound there.

No, my only real complaint with this song is the intro. It's way too long. Pull out your favourite records and see how long a typical intro is. Some of the biggest hits of all time (Hard Day's Night foremost) had intros that were over and done with in 5 seconds or so.

Really Good for a first posting &mdash 01/16/07 - 05:17:05 PM
I like it. I agree with Vic though, the piano part seems out of place somehow. It's almost sounds like a different song at that point.

Having said that, welcome to MacJams. Looking forward to more.

It's just something I like to do--mix two different types of songs together.

great track &mdash 03/01/07 - 12:15:48 PM
Love the guitar and drum box - really reminds me of early Cure (seventeen seconds). Great vocal harmonies as well, and a great chorus refrain .. again. The piano idea, and the drop-out in general, work really well, but i agree the piano sounds a bit brash ... the end sounds a little bit Nirvana-ish, but with better harmonies.

Another stonkin' track!

Hi Ash &mdash 03/02/07 - 06:15:23 PM
This sounds good too, I like the guitar sound and the melody, arrangemrnt etc, especially when the piano comes in. I'm not too qualified technically but I would have liked the vocals to be a little bit more upfront (but that is only my opinion others more qualified may disagree).
I can tell you have a good voice and the harmonies are great.
Thanks for posting.
Best Regards
Steve

More great power pop/alt/indie rock stuff hits MacJams.... &mdash 03/02/07 - 11:29:43 PM
I'm loving that Squier Strat of yours, and you're doing some nice recording with Doctor Rhythm...

Were you using a BR-8, by any chance?

Very Beatles-ish trip into the bright piano sound with the celloish synth over it...

Nice nod to Michael Stipe in the vocals, in a territory that also could included Michael Penn and Matthew Sweet...

Bet you'd really love the M-Tron mellotron software that Bubowski clued me into...

These first two tunes are really great... Welcome to MacJams!

Ed

thanks &mdash 03/04/07 - 11:58:49 AM
Thanks for the welcome. It was a BR-8 (The Berate). It served me well for a while. Recorded a CD with it. But I definitely outgrew it. I'd love to get some other way to record drums, like the Yamaha DD55. It's got some bad reviews, but I want to actually be able to hit something with sticks rather than poke at little pads with my fingers...that Squier strat has served me well. Got it in the 80s, I think they were making them better then.

I totally agree .... &mdash 03/03/07 - 07:27:26 PM
... with the R.E.M. reference ... it was my first thought when I started listening ... and then as I was listening ... I read the comments below ... I am also someone who likes to read the lyrics as I listen ... makes it easier to reference a certain part of the song if you are pointing something out .... I also really enjoyed the harmonies in here .... nice tune.

R.E.M. &mdash 03/04/07 - 12:03:15 PM
I've gotten the R.E.M. comment a lot with this song. Which is weird to me because they're not the hugest influence. When I wrote this song, I thought I was ripping off Lou Barlow and Sebadoh. Thanks for the comment.
