Lyrics and Vocals by I. Spike

Music, Performance, Production and background vocals by Miss Chaos

Lyrics:
icy breath, pillows of frost
turning emerald green in the Northern lights

forget the field of sleep and flowers
now is the time for eyes wide open
the whistle of the polar wind
in a binding white world
I hear a voice
calling me

I hear voices
I hear voices

whispering tales of snow and ice
they ask me to follow them
dragging me down through icy water
a long, deep, frozen sleep
a long, deep, frozen sleep

I hear voices
calling me

now I can lay my head
on snowflakes as soft as down
and when I look above
the stars are falling down

I hear voices
I hear voices
calling me

this is great &mdash 01/11/07 - 06:35:12 PM
I Spike has a beautiful voice.

I really love the way your vocals, Miss Chaos, float through the electrobeats - reminds me of my favorite Radiohead songs.

With that said, I think this song is best when there is tension, vocals and instruments at odds with each other.

Happy New Year, by the way!

thank you, estillie! &mdash 01/12/07 - 09:21:43 AM
I'm glad you picked up on the tension. It's something I. Spike succeeded with when creating the vocal melody; he took these short passages and made them gorgeous, long, and flowing strands of 'song'. I'm so happy you liked this enough to fave it! Happy New Year to you as well!

Perfect marriage of vocals to your wonderful, creative, evocative track. You continue to build gorgeous arrangements - you certainly have a gift.

And Mr. Spike is one amazing musician. What a voice - what a vocal part.

This is a beautiful collaboration. Thank you for allowing me to put it on my iPod.

dangerous combo &mdash 01/11/07 - 06:44:34 PM
You two... very chilling music. It has that frosty ethereal MissChaos sweeping quality, and the edgy i.Spike lyric with his great voice (and hints of MissChaos too.) Other than the occasional sudden/unusual chord changes which were odd in my ears (that's MY problem), this was quite beautiful. I like the mix of muffled chorus, crisp singing, sweeping synths, and the characteristic MissChaos arpeggios.

I'm really glad you liked this one, strange twists 'n turns and all! What's cool about this song, for me, is that it started out as a means to train my ear to play something other than the next predictable note in a pattern. And the reason for that is because I really want to make music that's unlike anything I've heard before. I've been listening to a lot of William Orbit and it's becoming more and more of an influence -- the way he uses unpredictable chords and the experimental and textural nature of some of his more recent music. But as I said above, it's become a real song now, thanks to I. Spike, and I couldn't be happier with his vision of it. Thank you so much, Drak -- always such a pleasure to read your thoughts. :-)

No. I hear voices. &mdash 01/11/07 - 09:46:11 PM
The voice here is a perfect cap to the sonic bed that Miss C. has put together... The lead singing is stunning... The background voices are beautiful...

The basic track is so full, and yet so subtle, in its sounds, in its motion, in the changing textures... The other word that applies is sophisticated...

I would love to see the lyrics....

I love what I think I caught as changing vocal effects on the lead vocal... I wouldn't have thought of doing that, and it sounds great...

The funny thing is, I came to this tune having just listened to a couple old Genesis tracks, and, really, it could not help but strike my ears that THIS actually sounds better...

Quite the collab.

Ed

I get such gratification hearing your thoughts on songs -- even reading your thoughts on others' songs. Your "sophistication" remark is truly a compliment. I've been struggling and experimenting with my music lately and I think you've nailed something that I always try to acheive with each song. Thank you for that. But I think most of the compliments should be directed to I. Spike, for he really made this what it is.

No really this piece is now complete, but as a song.

It was complete, in its own way, with the earlier released soundscape. (I never expected this version and because of my surprise and the pieces' enchanting quality, both in music and singing, it makes me smile).

The collaboration and production work is excellent.

What more will 2007 bring?? My mind is 'boggling' already.

Falling thru a museful dream &mdash 01/12/07 - 08:29:39 AM
IS's vocals move thru the crystalline music like a thawing, heated arrow moving in slow motion. The smoothness of your vocals were so smooth I thought it was Leon at first. There is a storytelling, theatrical sense that the clear production expertly accentuates. The female siren syllables work well with the entire interfolded music bed, as if the singer is falling thru dreams, wanting only to let go to either muse, love, sleep or afterlife, or each and all at once. Haunting, compelling, artistic.

Great prodction, arrangement and vocals. Lyrics are cool too!

The only thing I have a problems is the voice on 'I hear voices' bit. I think the voice could be doubled up to give it a bit more substance. As its the chorus I think it needs just a little more impact -not much though as I like the reverb on it and know what you are getting at. Otherwise - very very good!

Really appreciate your thoughts and suggestion. I actually have the chorus vox doubled: one with no effects and one using the Ambience Reverb AU (I forget which setting though...) and tweaked both around a bit. I can hear what you mean about giving the chorus vox a bit more punch. That's something I'll think about if I re-work the mix on this one. Thank you SO much!

Okay, back off the cloud now. :-) somehow, though, I don't doubt I Spike could do it, and do it with the utmost in brilliance.

Interesting .... &mdash 01/12/07 - 12:51:04 PM
.... that Tobin should mention "Leon" because that was my first impression too when listening to this ... it sounded like Leon singing in a more subdued fashion than I am used to hearing (his usual belting tones) ... I was totally amazed by the fact that ISpike was able to add vocals to this piece ... I would NEVER have been able to do that ... I think my brain has shrunk somewhat of late and I keep hearing things from MJ's that I never would have dreamed of doing .... and it sounds FANTASTIC! The music behind the vocal is beautiful and certainly is so full now with the addition of vocals .... I've listened to a few ISpike collabs of late (oooops might have been too dozy to comment lazy lazy me) and am impressed by what I am hearing. Great collab you two ...

I hadn't thought of the Leon similarity until you said it. But you're right! There's that same "singing from the gut" ability. Takes quite the talented vocalist to pull off the emotions I Spike can. Thank so much for your thoughts!

Now that I can read along with the song, I have to say it has such a deeper impact... I'm struck with a sense of longing or unfulfillable expactation... such a great contrast between warmth and desolate cold...

an incredible marrage of the warmth of your trax, with the artisry of the poet I Spike... and for the first time I am realizing that you are singing some of the back vox.. exellent... to your credit, on the first listen I thought it was Him singing

Waves of harmony &mdash 01/12/07 - 11:57:23 PM
Nice deep sub-bass and an ominous intro. The opening melody is lovely and has an appealing, slightly detached feel to it that makes for a great hook. Really nice performance I Spike! I also like the wandering vocal line behind the verse and refrain that compliments the mellow pad synth.

I dig the shift in perception when you add the heavy reverb to the vocals in the refrain, but I wonder if that part couldn't be brought up in the mix a bit? I don't think you would lose the desired effect.

The ambient sounds, breakdowns, and percussive effects are a real treat!

I'd also like to suggest that you consider sharpening (emphasizing the higher frequencies and attack envelope) of the snare and the high-hat-like part that pans left and right in the rhythm. Making those parts crisp would really accentuate by contrast the rich reverb and ambiance that you've woven throughout the piece.

Lovely and lush song embedded in a billowing landscape of harmonies. You two have crafted something beautifully ethereal and unique - tres magnifique!

hey chikoppi &mdash 01/13/07 - 05:27:29 PM
I had the percussion a little more sharp to begin with, but I've had comments in the past about certain sounds that become too distracting when they're too frequent and too "sharp". So on this mix, I deadened the treble on the perc tracks a bit so they wouldn't be distracting... But I think you're on to something. My struggle was more with volume than it was with attack and definition. I think you're right. The percussion needs that definition, but not necessarily volume.

You have become my favorite "ears" at Macjams. I hope I may be able to pick your brain a bit when I re-work this in the future. Your advice is very much appreciated. thank you!
