Description:
This is an exercise in random composition and sound design.

Original track was conceived and performed by Cat using Garageband3

http://www.macjams.com/song/27960

Additional sound sculpture by Bryn in Logic 7.2 and Soundforge 8.

We would like to invite Mungo to add something to this if he wishes.

In an oblique strategy spirit, our instructions and challenge to you is..."Add atmosphere, not clutter"

so am unable to leave an erudite structured comment at this point. I can say however that this is really FAB! Nice of you both to take us on a journey beyond the Plateaux of Mirrors!
Lovely

Thank you Steve &mdash 01/13/07 - 08:29:04 AM
It has been an interesting journey to the plateux. Mysti says that she now has some music for airports ready for when she makes her trip...

:-)

Now...where are those Silver Screen elements?

Chills down my spine &mdash 01/12/07 - 12:28:10 PM
The sonic textures are REALLY cool. Unsettling but calming at the same time. Reminiscent of early Vangelis (like from Albedo 0.39)

This is a truly excellent sound bed. AND I absolutely love the photo too. I stand in awe.

Thank you Bubowski &mdash 01/13/07 - 08:32:22 AM
I once had the vinyl version of Albedo 0.39 (many moons ago) I can barely remember it...I will have to see if I can find it somewhere and give it another listen.

Thank you for listening.

interesting journey &mdash 01/12/07 - 02:06:02 PM
It was fascinating to listen to Mystified's original improvisation, followed by this greatly-expanded version.

Your additional sounds in this were very well-chosen and well-placed, which definitely maintained your wish to "add atmosphere, not clutter".

It is always very challenging to add sounds to an already-existing track, without it being too busy. You succeeded very well here.

It is very interesting to note the differences between GarageBand and Logic; the latter seems to have much more depth and expansiveness. (I'd better get busy with my copy of Logic Express, which I haven't tried yet!)

I was amazed at how long this track has become, compared to the original. But it flows very well and there's a certain timelessness to ambient music which holds this piece together well from start to finish.

Your reflections are always extremely thoughtful and very welcome here.

Mystified sent me the original track on Wednesday (along with the garageband file) I immediately did a new version in Logic 7 using her original midi but I changed all the software instruments and added different delays and reverbs.

Over the next couple of hours I ended up with 7 different versions of what was originally called 'a little ditty'.

All subsequent manipulations were done with Soundforge (including extreme time and pitch manipulations, merging of different files/sounds and various mastering tweaks). It ultimately became a 'musique concrete' piece I guess in this sense.

It's extremely interesting to consider that I didn't play a note on this and yet it would not exist as you hear it here without my input.

Good luck with Logic Express. If you get through the initial learning curve successfully (which I am sure you will) you will never look back and will perhaps be looking forwards to Logic Pro.

the synergy of collaboration... &mdash 01/13/07 - 04:32:13 PM
Bryn and I have done several collaborations, now, but this one was a bit of a surprise to me in how quickly it developed and grew out of relatively simple ideas.

It's a piece I'm really proud to be associated with!
Thank you, Bryn, for adding your 'alchemy' of sonic depth and expansion to this track.
Definitely one of my favorites!

My kind of trip &mdash 01/13/07 - 09:21:26 AM
before reading the posts I immediately thought of the likes of Vangelis and Orbit....just remarkable work....a sonic feast...a trip into the Light Fields. Thanks guys for sharing.

Well there's a challange... &mdash 01/13/07 - 10:22:05 AM
Adding atmosphere to this can't be the easiest task! This is a near mystique experience as it is... Good luck, Mungo! Thanks for posting such a wonderful piece!

Very nice. &mdash 01/13/07 - 01:09:29 PM
Layers are so well placed! Even on these iMac speakers, voices have their own placement. It's like walking through a field, noting the natural and architectural elements as you feel the sun on your back and the wind on your cheek.

From one Mysti sidekick to another... &mdash 01/15/07 - 09:13:00 AM
I guess I was trying to attribute some emotions to this and although the effects could lend a creepy feel, I was actually finding this quite joyous, tinged with mystery and wonder. I'm not sure about soundscapes but it actually feels so all encompassing that it seems like you've created a tangible environment that one could actually walk through.

Terrific

KK

PS - I'd like to know more about the random process used in the composition...
