minigurl (10)kevmikwa (4)rock (1083)guitar (860)damaged (2)dark (300)
Description:
Ok, so I'm back again with this tune. Only this time, I've had the very talented kevmikwa hanging out with me on drums, and his track blew my mind. So a HUGE thanks goes out to him for helping me out again. I've re-worked the vocals a touch as well.

In case you missed it the first time:

This is a song that I started writing probably about three years ago, and never made it past the first verse and chorus. Every once in a while when I picked up my guitar, I'd start strumming these chords, and the song would sort of sprout up again. Well, finally, after three years of tinkering, it's finally done. Lyrically it's a little darker than I would typically write, but expanding musical horizons is always a good thing.

As always, comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Lyrics:
I was standing out as the rain was pouring down
I was too dry to come inside
I was on the edge on the verge of breaking down
My sanity would not comply

Chorus:
Where do I go now
I've got nowhere to turn, that bridge has burned
Where do I, where do I go now
Honey you did all you could, but I am
Damaged Goods

I'm all alone in an over crowded room
I want to run to face my fears
In my head well that little voice consumes
The thoughts that it engineers

Chorus

I'd try to sleep but these ghosts exhaust my bed
Those who came before torn away
Sick of hanging on they chose to cut their thread
Didn't realize I'd be healed to stay

Chorus
I am damaged, I am damaged goods

Wow this is great &mdash 01/12/07 - 04:06:01 PM
What a good live in the studio sound you've gotten here. I especially like the way your voices overlaps itself from verse to chorus. The guitar tones are fantastic as well as the playing all around. Lyrics and vocals are wonderful - I really connect with the second verse. Well done. What a difference a drummer can make - great job kevmickwa - excellent collab. This song is also structurally interesting BTW.

Thanks for the comment Bud. Mike did an awesome job on the drums, completely upped the tempo. So a big thanks to him. The chord progression is a little different, but that's what I was going for. Thanks for the listen and comment!

I like how you start this one. Good build up and I dig how those guitar play. Well done drums, and the song is put together real good. Your vocal is just right for this tune. I have just good things to say about this one:)

Thanks for the listen. I had a lot of fun laying the guitar parts down. It's all a learning progess, trying new things and seeing if they work. Playing outside the "box" that I'm used to playing in.

Great voice, fits the style of the song. Love the Neil Young style guitar solo. Very convincing!

You're not the first person that's mentioned Neil Young, and I take that as a compliment, so thank you! This was a fun one to work on. Thanks for the listen and comment.

This is again a very charming track. You're evolving so greatly with every tune you upload. The chorus is a killer, lingers on in my head. One little thought: I might like to hear you breaking out a bit more vocally. I mean: in some parts you tend to follow the chords with your voice too litterally (especially in the verses). A little extension of the vocal scale - up and down - would bring some more melodic variation to the song. But apart from that, once again, very well done.

Thanks for the listen and comment. Glad to hear that the chorus is sticking in your head. One of the girls that I work with is constantly humming it, and that always puts a smile on my face. And having a good hook is never a bad thing. Thanks again!

I hear more air in this mix... &mdash 01/12/07 - 09:56:19 PM
...more difference left to right, I think...

Still hear the Liz Phair, still love that ascending electric line at the chorus...

I think I'm hearing more acoustic in there, too, playing rhythm against the cymbal lines...

It's great having that real drumming for a track like this. I might even suggest trying a mix with the drums more forward, building the mix from the drums and the best sound you can get on them, coupled with the best sound you can get from the vocal... then layering in the other stuff...

I can really see you working at your craft in these versions, and I admire it...

Slowly but surely I think that I'm figure this stuff out. I read and re-read all the comments on the previous mix, and tried to make sure that I made a couple of changes. Glad to hear that I'm slowly figuring it out. Thanks for the listen and comment!

Stop it &mdash 01/12/07 - 10:15:05 PM
Please, minigurl - you're killing me ... you're gonna give me a big fat head if you keep praising me so. If I was doing some groundbreaking stuff (i.e. something that Tadashi Togawa or Perceptual Vortex might do), that would be one thing. I'm just kinda playing along - your groove was already laid out there. However, I will say that I kinda pride myself on drumming like that - simple and supporting. You're da bomb, I'm just the guy behind da bomb with the drumset.

Thanks for letting me play on your track! Oh, and thanks to bud, thoddi, and Ejh for the kind words.

My father always told me to give praise where praise is due. And anyone who can take a song, listen to it a few times, and then lay a drum track as quickly as you did, certainly deserves my praise, so thank you again.

As always, it's a pleasure working with you! Thanks so much for taking what I hear in my head, and making it sound better than I imagined!

This song has taken forever to come about. I can usually write something in one sitting, and edit it a few times over the course of a couple of weeks. But for whatever reason, it took 3 years for this to get finished. And as far as I'm concerned it was well worth the wait. Thanks for the comment and listen!

NOT BAD &mdash 01/14/07 - 07:54:54 PM
Diggin the tune but I'm not sure what it is about that electric guitar. I don't know what it is? Sounds a little loose. Seems like there might be a bad note in there along the progression. Maybe it's just me?

Not sure about the electric either. I'll have to take a closer listen to it, because I haven't noticed anything yet, and I've listened to this song a million times. Which may actually be why I can't hear it. Thanks for the listen and comment!

Wow, this gets better each pass. I know you want this to be slightly dissonant to get the point of "Damaged Goods" across, so I accept that here. Your very first vocal line is slightly slurred and hard to understand the words, but then the rest of your singing is clear after that. The initial guitar and drum leadup in the song is awesome, really gets things moving and its unstoppable after that, Mike, absolutely awesome drumming there! Jen, your guitar playing and singing is great, and very professional sounding mix. Love all the little nuances.

Well ... &mdash 01/15/07 - 01:52:03 PM
I don't know that I'd say I "hate" to hear it :). I may not be the best at accepting compliments, but everyone likes to know that their part made a difference, so it does mean a lot to me when you (and drakonis and jiguma et al) say nice things.

I guess it's only tough for me because I'm not doing anything particularly inventive - I just heard the groove Jen had already laid down and played along. Heck, I totally lifted the "I am damaged, I am damaged" turn (the tom roll thing) from Jen's original track!

Seriously - your kindness is appreciated, and it does make a fella feel good.

[ Reply to This ]
Still love this &mdash 01/14/07 - 09:54:12 PM
Liked this a lot in the earlier version, and Mike's drumming certainly improves it - nothing beats good live drums. The Liz Phair comparison still holds, and your singing, playing etc are all great - I think you might have even lifted the bass a little, as it certainly has more presence than the earlier version. I'm a little trepidacious in saying this, but I think this has another step to go before you've squeezed the best out of it - to me, the production could be a little more aggressive and driving. I'd be really interested in hearing what someone like racerat or SIL-VER or one of the other production gurus could do with your GB tracks. This is a really good song, and top-notch production would make it even better. I'm only saying this because it's so good!
Cheers,
Neil

I agree with the "pro" production thing. I keep telling myself that I really don't know what I'm doing (and I really don't). I just tinker around with things until they sound good to my ear, with little thought as to what exactly it is that I'm doing. Glad that you enjoy the song, thanks for the comment and listen.

But there could have been some more instrumental parts (IMHO).
Maybe you do a remix of this the hi-hat is too much on the left and as Moorland said some voice parts could be clearer.

Good Song &mdash 01/20/07 - 11:59:58 PM
Very strong melody, I especially liked the chorus. I too heard a little disparity in the guitar parts as pointed out by Doctor Bizzare. There is a bit of dissonance in the verse between the two electric parts. I actually like it and would leave it. There is certain amount of tension created by it and coincides with the lyrics subject matter. If this song is representative of your abilities you are very gifted songwriter.

Hey, "Minigurl!" &mdash 01/25/07 - 03:06:49 PM
Man, your stuff just keeps getting better and better. Another favorite. This is really tight and musical. kevmikwa's drums suit this well. The only nit I have, and it's more personal preference than anything, I thought the vox could have used the slightest bit of reverb. I did like the vox though. Especially the way you weaved the backing vocal. Very nice.
