Description:
Another piece thrown together in a hotel room and on a plane from GB1 in my iBook. Music came first - inspiration/vocal later. I had no idea where this was headed till it got there. Lots of premixing and no going back due to slow processor and mini memory.
In memory of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

What a GREAT idea. &mdash 01/12/07 - 03:22:34 PM
Wow bud, what a great way to have put this together. Such an important message in that speech, that still rings true today. I think that you captured everything so well between the speech and the music. Great job!

Thanks minigurl &mdash 01/12/07 - 03:56:20 PM
It really was an accident. I put together the music with no lyrics or anything in mind - more just a fun exercise - thinkin a little about James Brown. Flying home from Chicago I saw that I had the Dream Speech in my iTunes and decided to give it a try. The text is cut and pasted to fit the music. I hope no one objects to me editing such a tremendous piece of audio history. The original is 16 minutes long and can be found at Archive.org.

thrown together wtih style I must say. The ryhtm fits the speech just right Mr King and James Brown would be proud. An enjoyable tune Thanks dwlded

I was worried &mdash 01/12/07 - 07:11:24 PM
about trying to sing like James Brown - this was definitely the easier way out. I felt bad altering the Dr.'s timing - but I shortened some of the pauses between phrases to pick up the cadence a little. Thnaks for stopping by.

ring it did &mdash 01/12/07 - 07:29:14 PM
really liked it near the ending where you multi-tracked the voice. a good crescendo. lets all hold on to our dreams

Well, for a quick job &mdash 01/13/07 - 04:00:50 AM
the result is absolutely amazing. I'm not so crazy usually about political speeches thrown onto songs, I find it overheard and a bit easy, but this one really swings. Great job of editing. I noticed the bass, the one I used in my first post here, you developped it much better than me. Love the synth comming right in the middle. Great mixing. Excellent, Bud.

I mean, agree, that touch on the multi-tracking toward the end was the icing on this cake.

Cool idea!

...before even hearing it. I KNEW it was going to be great! WOW! Positively super. I've heard this speech many times, but never like this. Yes, let freedom ring!

Be well!

One of my favorite things about GB or multitracking in general is the opportunity to let chance have the upperhand - iChing production. This is one. There are things I would have done differently had I known from the start where I was headed - but I don't suspect it would be bettter - only different. Dr. King's message is so strong, and performance so moving - it would have been next to impossible to screw it up.

I was concerned about the sampling/copyright deal here - but figured this recording to be in the public domain - by rights if not in fact. Chance worth taking.

bud - that was a great idea - i can almost see him doin the james brown slide while preachin it. apparently you listened to the man - accompaniment ebbs and flows to support his rap. pretty cool job of timing it all right to maximize the effect. good combo of music and man!

I do the same thing from time to time. Thanks for the kind comment(s). I actually finished the music first and did most of the tweaking with the good Dr.s track. I love it when things just work out by accident.

Very nice production here.

Great track &mdash 09/13/07 - 04:19:33 PM
Even though its temporarily unavailable, I heard this in the selection of songs on the home page (I don't know how that can happen at the same time), and this track is absolutely brilliant. The track is so funky, the funk is dripping out of my speakers and the vocal of Martin Luther King (R.I.P.) goes really well with the track. Well done. I will download when the track is available again.
