Keywords:

Description:
After Peter Greenstone begged and pleaded (almost to the point of embarrassment) for me to devote a wee bit more energy into the mix of this song (originally posted http://www.macjams.com/song/22262), I decided that I owed it to him and the rest of the MJ community to give it a shot. Let me know if you think this was worth the extra effort. Thanks guys. This is what Mac Jams is all about - feedback, collaboration and putting words into other peoples mouths.

Lyrics:
He was thinking
She was nowhere
He was drinking
Then she was there

So in love
Hope I remember your name

He was drinking
She was nowhere
He was thinking
Then she was there

So in love
Hope I remember your name

Hardware:
Custom 3 string guitar, bass, Dr Rhythm on drums and an abused Shure mic.

GB3, Audacity

This Sounds Worse Than The Original! &mdash 01/17/07 - 01:37:31 PM
I don't know what happened here, but this sounds like junk to me. What happened?

Sorry. I was actually excited when I posted this. Now I'm disgusted.

I see the punk aesthetic is still alive &mdash 01/17/07 - 02:37:24 PM
Keep it simple, make your point, and then shut the **** up.

This song is not a second too long, and I mean that in a good sense.

Btw, in the second half it sounds like the bass is introducing some weird sounds into the mix.

Victor.

Thirty years later?? It can't be..... Who'da thought it would still influence an old robot like myself?

Thanks Vic. I don't know what happened to the second half of the tune, but I'm going to investigate it. I hear buzzing and popping through my speakers that I didn't hear in my headphones last night.

Must be the rattling of the safety pins holding the song together.

Its getting clearer... &mdash 01/17/07 - 03:01:56 PM
Bob - listened to this vs the original - it defeinately sounds clearer to me, and less murky than before. Song writing and recording can be a thankless pain in the arse, but I think you've defienately polished this up ... sounds like adam and the ants when they were young and good.

Keep it up bub!

Other Things Lurking Beneath &mdash 01/17/07 - 03:28:04 PM
Thanks Steve. I appreciate the comparrisson(s). I have a long way to go to learn how to hear. Who ever said it was easy was a big fat liar.

By the way, I love Ant Music.

"Unplug yer jukebox, and do us all a favor. That music's lost it's taste so try another flavor!"

sounds better to me as well. I'm less sure about the new liars mix,but I'm certainly no expert.

Antrap &mdash 01/18/07 - 05:43:56 AM
Hah - I actually meant their first stuff (much better) - Cartrouble for example (where Franz ferdinand got their ideas from).
But keep at it - mixing was the part of home recording I struggled with to start with, and it still is. I got a lot of books and magazine articles on mixing and EQ to get my head round it - i also mix whilst listening to another 'proper' track (on Gentle Machine I compared it to Sia and Portishead)through the same speakers, which is a BIG help.

The beginning... &mdash 01/18/07 - 01:01:10 PM
That sample / noise in the beginning is crazy. You could almost make another song out of that alone.

There IS a need for Five Extra Arms.

Noise at the beginning.... &mdash 01/18/07 - 02:36:59 PM
Funny you should mention it, Line Of Extra Pixies... That noise is from a part of another song I haven't yet posted. Have you seen that "Tune Up Catalyst" widget? I suggested that I take a chorus from one song and try to make it work in another song, or something like that. So, that very crazy sound before the drums start is the result of that idea.

I still think I need something to POP right before the vocals start - to connect the awkward introduction of vocals. Something just doesn't snap there.

Oh well, there's no limit to the number of possibilities.

Thanks for your comment and for your interest in really good music....

...the opening sound is great... but I also liked the rest of the tune... especially the shuffling drums

the point of collapse &mdash 03/29/07 - 04:34:58 PM
your guitar is perfect and the mix is ok, but could be brightened up a bit, if you are so inclined. i think you're more interested in writing songs than production. ok by me.

i put this song on my ipod.

btw - funny comment about peter greenstone. you're hilarious.

Listening to your rare b-sides.

I've been trying, but I seemed to be not able to destroy you.
