Description:
This is 6 minutes of music for orchestra. It is also an experiment - I wanted to find out what a symphony orchestra sounds like without the basses (no pitched instrument goes below C1), and at the same time I wanted to find out wether or not you can compose for an orchestra and leave the bassline out. Will the music make any sense? Well, this my friends, is up to you.

Fluctuations is the first movement in a planned four movement piece where each movement is supposed to reflect over one of the four elements...

Man, this is a fine orchestra. Precise, perfect, astounding. Please tell us more about the group, your recording technique, when/where it was recorded, who directed, and such. I have always thought it is nice to write within limitations, but always thought it mere gimmick to do stuff like write to avoid technical things (my composition prof once wrote a piano sonata called Sans C, avoiding middle C), but this transcends any gimmick, or even any intellectual experiment. It could do with some volume boosting. But other than that, an astounding track, wonderfully inventive, balanced, passionate composition, brilliantly interpreted and played!

Thanks! &mdash 01/23/07 - 11:46:25 AM
Many thanks for your comments!

I once heard that Miles Davies could say to his fellow musicians: "a-minor". Which meant that every key was acceptable BUT a-minor...

This is astonishing! &mdash 01/23/07 - 10:07:42 AM
Exquisite, rich, really very beautiful. These fragile skeins of sound are surprisingly hefty, and pack a real sonic punch! I second every one of Tobin's accolades, and would also like to know more about this.

this is so F.A - which means 'freaking awesome'!!!!!! love the dynamic. love the expression. love the subtlety, accuracy magnetised with spontaneous flow. impressionistic in a very modern, uncharted way.

I'm very happy for your positive comments. I really didn't expect anyone to appreciate this kind of music here, but little do you know. I'll send each one of you some details about the orchestra and so on... I'm not really allowed to put the music here... Don't wanna risk a law sue...

Love it! &mdash 01/23/07 - 11:31:57 PM
I see music as a very visual tableau as well as sonic one... So this conjures up all sorts of images that play on the edges of my dreams and some of my nightmares...

Thanks for posting this! This is incredibly fine stuff. Did you used to be Toru Takemitsu? Amazing journey through some wonderful colours. Amazing! And a great performance; just blows me away. Is this a recording from a concert, or a rehearsal, or from a CD?

I once wrote a piece that didn't go below middle C for the first few minutes, then gradually worked its way down to the gloomy depths... I have no idea what happened to it. I probably tossed it out when I moved some time. Your piece is infinitely better though!

A brilliant piece of orchestral writing! The tonal colors are unexpected and beautiful. Stravinski-esque at times but not at all derivative. Wonderful performance. I suppose that low thunder we hear is only the bass drum...love the string harmonics, almost like a glass harmonica. Thanks for sharing this!
