Description:
Another collaboration with brother Will (Willnlf). My kids are out, my wife is in the city , and I had four hours alone to play. Will sent me the lyrics a few weeks ago - I hope I did him justice.

Lyrics:
He headed west when it was done
some wreckage left behind
didn’t mean to hurt no one
just had to clear his mind
from a decade of confusion
had to clear the air
to find if he was someone
who could feel or really care

He had a destination
but he didn’t have a plan
just had to spend some time alone
just had to see the land
so he packed all his belongings
in his old VW
set out for the open road
weary, kinda blue

He has to hit the road they say
it’s the asphalt in his veins
he has to keep on moving
just a memory remains

And he saw the autumn colors
he saw Niagara Falls
he crossed a lake to Canada
where the northern winter calls
he felt his spirits rising
he felt his soul shake free
as the road slipped by beneath him
and his eyes could finally see

chorus

He skirted round the Great Lakes
crossed the northern plains
bought a pack of Lucky Strikes
raced the long freight trains
he kept a pint of whiskey
on the floor beneath his feet
he sipped it as the miles clipped by
like a drummer’s steady beat

By the time he reached Montana
he’d left the past behind
at least that’s what he told himself
in his heart and in his mind
When he saw the Rocky Mountains
he knew that he was home
no one had to tell him
he could feel it in the stone.

chorus

So he stopped in Colorado
he puts his root down there
surrounded by the pine trees
he breathed the cold clean air
he played some blue grass music
he climbed some mountain peaks
some days he had a lot to say
some days he’d hardly speak

chorus

Now and then the road calls out
the road that travels west
he gets that haunting feeling
he thinks it would be best
to hit the open road again
to take another look
to add another chapter
to a never ending book

chorus

this tune really makes me want to get in the car. Great song Bud, kinda reminds me of Zappa meets Captain Beefheart meets the Butthole Surfers!
FFFFAVED!
(where are the bloody car keys....?!)

road worthy &mdash 01/19/07 - 11:07:02 PM
4 hours? very road gritty, a little white line fever, a little devo, wall of voodoo, zappa, dead kennedys, all shaken with bad shocks, makes a great bud tonic for a road trip...and don't forget the lucky strikes. a very road worthy (leaving neat tire) tracks. i really like this!

Yeah 4 hours &mdash 01/19/07 - 11:27:30 PM
No dexxies, no whites, just an empty house and the need for speed. I guess it's a little long and repetitive, but so's the road. You guys don't waste any time I must say. Love getting mail.

Glad you liked the drums - there Big Hair loops sexed up a little. Wasn't thinkin about the Buttholes with this one - but I think the drums point there as much as anything. Gibby stayed in the apartment next to mine on the LES back in the day. What a character.

ass fault &mdash 01/21/07 - 12:43:14 PM
Like Tenacious D says -
the road is the only road I know.
I thought i commented on this last night but evidently i didn't. I hate it when my parallel universes start to blur together.
I love all the electronic swooshings and the energy in the instruments. I know I'm gonna have this one in my head all day.
The lyrics tell a great story in a great way.
Lucky Strikes, Trains, whiskey, the open road, scenery and nature, blue grass music, inner struggle, searching and resolution....this songs got it ALL!
Colorado is a beautiful state.

Thank willnlf for the tale - a true story. I'm having a great time working cross country with my brother. Your music blows my mind - I'm so glad you stopped by. Thanks for your comments.

The guitars on this... &mdash 01/21/07 - 03:45:09 PM
...remind me of 'Cry Of Love'-ear Jimi Hendrix... Songs like 'Freedom' and 'Ezy Rider'...

I like the thumpy quality of the drumming against the higher pitched guitar lines, with the bass striking a nice balance between holding down the mid-bottom and being melodic...

On my system, I think I'd do better with a mix that gives a little more attention to the vocal... I think if I didn't have the lyric sheet the words would go by me faster than I can pick 'em out...

You have a nice facility for taking a sound rooted in Sixties-era experimentation, and then bringing it up to date with nods to more recent recordings...

Ed

That's a high bar to you're puttin up &mdash 01/21/07 - 08:08:11 PM
thanks for the comparisons - and the detailed experience of the mix and arrangement. None of this is premeditated - i just start and follow through - hopin for the best. The sixties are in my bones and a lot of the new influences I owe to people like egobandit and other jammers here.

jammin' &mdash 01/22/07 - 01:07:30 AM
That's what I like, immediacy. That's a lot of tracks for 4 hours. Great energy. The vocals are a little up front, wish the guitars were a little panned out to the sides a little to give some depth--and louder, especially the rhythm distorted ax, but cool notheless. Great lyrics.

you're right on all counts &mdash 01/22/07 - 08:05:51 AM
I think I'll go back in and tweak accordingly. Part of the quick thing keeps me from getting the distance to hear with fresh ears. Thanks for the comments.

Been listening to Neil Young &mdash 01/23/07 - 07:02:46 AM
at the Fillmore 1970 in the car lately - can't help but creep in - that and the fact that Will and I went to Woodstock together. Yeah - it's fun collaborating like this after all these years. Thanks for stopping by. BTW - your new tune is excellent.

All around great song. &mdash 05/13/07 - 08:32:00 PM
Guitar, vocals, lyrics drum loops, production, everything. It's a good-sounding song. I can hear all of the instruments clearly. Your voice sounds like a cross between Primus and Cake. Danelectro guitars rule! I would love to buy me a late 90s reissue U2 or U3. I like your bass lines.

Wait a minute ... are the drums loops? The more I listen to it the more I think they're real. Good job whatever you did.
