Description:
Another song from my childhood.
...the fall of a hero.
Lyrics:
Gardner and Jim
Raised their fists
In the alley after school
One good, bad
Sharp jaws tight
Bright eyes squinting in
Cold clean air
Heroes wheeling
In the dust
Gardner reaches
Jab connects
Jimmys pounded
Garders stern
Takes not one blow...
Jim drops his hands
Drops of blood
From his cheek
Clot with dust
The quiet takes all
Back to the world
The quiet steps drag
Us to a changed world

I dug &mdash 01/21/07 - 07:29:42 PM
the vibe of the tune... the vocals just have that right
amount of feel and weirdness...
I think the acoustic guitar is a bit too loud in the mix.
Liked the electric guitar accents, just the right stuff at the right moments....
This tune and "Wild Uninta" are my favs...
Cheers

Thanks for the comments. Yeah, I go back to "Wild Uinta." It seems to be one the more honest runs I've had.
Just my attempt to pick up a little of the spirit!

Thanks for throwing those hints on your post. &mdash 01/21/07 - 10:03:00 PM
This is a great piece for seeing the big picture through the immediate moment. Actually, very cinematic. The video is right here in my head. Nice acoustic guitar & appropriately understated vocals. The guitar is a little high in the mix - it almost drowned out the vocals at a couple of points. Otherwise, a fine offering in a genre that I just don't get to very often. [ Reply to This ]
Hey Kristy &mdash 01/21/07 - 10:14:11 PM
Thanks for the visit! Yup! That acoustic is too loud. I just can't help it. It's my guitar's fault!
No, it mine. I like to hide behind it sometimes. I'm getting better!

I changed the genre. I don't think it was a good fit!

When you do get that new mike, &mdash 01/22/07 - 12:20:52 PM
...You'll want to bring the vocals up! I don't think the guitars are too loud... the vocals are understated. I like when the harmonies come in... the vox seemed 'centered' in the sound field. When there is simply one voice... the vox were off center, toward the right. I'd bring the solo voice to dead center... and pan the acoustic, L and R.
Pleasant approach to song structure with touches of emotion and technique.

Your comments are always welcome!
I'll play with the vox a bit. I do like the power of the acoustic guit.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it!

Calming &mdash 01/22/07 - 01:10:20 PM
Has a very Pink Floyd feel to it. I liked how the vocals kind of slipped in and out of the tune. Agree about the guitar levels. I would like to hear a second acoustic track palying some different chord voicings. Maybe one guitar left, one right with the electric bouncing between the two. I think the second guitar could play some higher register chords to really fill out the range.
I like your voice - not typical at all. Kind of like a less-nasal Dylan. Very calming. I can imagine you singing a lullabye to a kid.
Nice listening. [ Reply to This ]
Calming &mdash 01/22/07 - 05:17:55 PM
Yah. I've been thinking about it. It's interesting that the subject is so intense, but the presentation is calm. I guess it is like a dark reflection of the past, a tragic moment.
I like Pink Floyd and Bob Dylan, so that works.
Maybe I will add some high chords, maybe plucked at the appropriate moments.
Thanks for stopping!

Nice. I don't usually listen to stuff this relaxing, so I'm currently drowsing off... heheh. Very cool; I enjoyed the mellow guitar and singing, and the touches of electric. [ Reply to This ]

Hints ....... &mdash 01/22/07 - 02:52:37 PM
.......... of Bowie in the harmonies - really unusual sound there. This song could obviously go the full production route, with extra instruments etc, but I think it works really well as a fully acoustic number with those little accents. I'd perhaps just double the acoustic track and speread it - then delay one side a little.
Very interesting!

Yeah, it might be kind of fun to rock it out sometime.
I was thinking of asking my wife, Doadars Aunt, if she would like to do backups on this one. She is really much better than me.
Thanks for listening!

Nice... &mdash 01/22/07 - 03:19:14 PM
Reminds me of The Mountain Goats a bit, and I wouldn't really change too much except to bring up the vocals a bit. It also reminds me of something from that first Bruce Springsteen album "Greetings from Asbury Park". There's points where it seems that there's some weird effects on the vocals that seems rather unnecessary, but it might just be my ears playing tricks on me. I like it! [ Reply to This ]
Thanks! &mdash 01/22/07 - 05:46:29 PM
I looked up The Mountain Goats. Nice stuff.
I can see the Springsteen connection.
Secret's out, the vocals are kind of freaky. I'm just trying to compensate for some inaccuracies. But in the end, I didn't mind it so much.
I'm glad you like it!

Great tune Doug... &mdash 01/22/07 - 05:33:42 PM
This would work in either the acoustic or full-on rock approaches. This is a really nice mix. The vocals are superb. I only wish they were a tad louder in places. Love the guitar playing.
It's good to have you back bro!

Such a beautiful sound you lend to that steel, the picking alternating with strumming, so light in touch, yet full and penetrating in depth, as if your song is to break apart in the air and become a song of the wind. [ Reply to This ]

our rough world &mdash 02/22/07 - 01:10:26 PM
the lyrics rather poignantly capture the bitter road most boys travel as they fight to grow up. The recording of the guitars was very good, they sound rich and strong, and I like the playing style. I had a little trouble with the strange harmonies in some places between acoustic, electric, and vox... but that's likely my more traditional ear unaccustomed to modern chords. Singing was nicely soft, juxtaposing the sharp anger that coaxes the fight.

Thanks for the gift!
Society encourages conflict and hierarchy. I'm glad I don't need to fight, anymore.
I am just beginning to play with vocal harmonies. I really don't know what's going on with them. But I hope to fall into something right (according to me). It may not resonate with the reality of the music world. Yet, I may work on this one again...
Peace,

Would really be cool to have some drums and bass added to this. I think it has a lot of potential and I love the melody and chord progression. [ Reply to This ]

Thanks for stopping in.
Since your post, I've started tapping out some perc. I think I can work it in a kind of backwards way as long as my rhythm is true. I'm going to work it without loops...tap-tap-tapping on my keyboard, going back and tapping more, and so on.
Fun!

this one a bunch too. i like the understated feel of the vocals. it's funny how many different opinions there can be about the same song. i for one would be bummed if this song started to rock. of course a good 50% of my songs have no drums and minimal chord changes. i can see the mountain goats comparison, maybe iron & wine too. really nice song.
