Description:
Work can hurt the brain. such a busy week juggling way to much. i can't even remember all i did. no loops or synths used
Lyrics:
Black Ice
some damaged goods
my damaged brain
i really don't care
can't remember a thing
call it amnesia
its all the same
never could remember
all the little things
chorus:
slipped my mind on black ice
better tell me twice
slipped my mind on black ice
open as the skys
just plug me in
some damn machine
spark my memory
please don't flatter me
have little post its
all over the place
digital calendars
remind if i'm late
chorus:
slipped my mind on black ice
better tell me twice
slipped my mind on black ice
open as the skys
call it multi task
doesn't prove a thing
for all i know
i do the same things
i don't remember
how this song goes
its just i forget
just like my dreams
slipped my mind on black ice

9 to five? &mdash 01/22/07 - 09:48:33 PM
i'm imprisoned from 8 to 5 or so usually without lunch. this is my life story. i think almost everyone gets the picture, you know when it's bad when you stop in the middle of something and can't remember what you where doing. i probably will need to a song about carpal tunnel. and i ain't laughing unless you have some good jokes.

fun with reverbs and delays &mdash 01/22/07 - 10:01:13 PM
fun with reverbs and delays. just got to keep 'em in line. remember in the past they said man of the future would have more leisure time? must been the same people who said it would also be a paperless society. not buying it.

Wowzers! &mdash 01/22/07 - 11:41:02 AM
Sounds like the return of the Electric Prunes!
Vicar my friend you EXCEL here. Wonderful lyrics. Perhaps your best singing ever. Incredible pro mix. Beautiful and hypnotic chord progression. Big rockin bass. Freakishly cool lead work. Truly a recipe for greatness.
Big kudos from your biggest fan! [ Reply to This ]
thanks Mike &mdash 01/22/07 - 10:12:56 PM
we're still to young to be on a prune diet yet....oh wait the other prunes. thought i'ld take it up a notch with the psychedelia. i hope i'm not writing a lifes diary through these songs. but i think most can relate. good thing there's music to create to get myself more mentally aligned. hmmm, i wonder if that came out right?
Thanks and great new song of yours, honored of the mentions! [ Reply to This ]
Love it! &mdash 01/22/07 - 02:56:34 PM
My favourite of yours so far Vic. I must have eaten something last night - everything I listen to this morning has Bowie influences. I really like the big production, your vox, the playing and the song itself - very cool!
Thanks for this,

thanks neil &mdash 01/22/07 - 10:44:19 PM
maybe we all ate the same thing. kidding. for a little while i've gone into the mind set of analyzing songs i always liked and have been figuring what they're doing to each element. so i've been digging in to see how far i can mix it all in. lyrics.... everyone probably goes through this a t times. and the black ice, well i had to shovel a foot of snow from a overnight dumping and yes i took a fall on the ice underneath. i hope no one was watching.
Thanks for the listen and comment! [ Reply to This ]
Damn Vic the productionn here is &mdash 01/22/07 - 05:32:14 PM
breathtaking - totally grabs me a carries me away - one hell of an extended bridge you got there. all sorts of cool stuff in here - love the singin saw sounding guitar in the last verse and the choir effect at the end. Great tune! Oh - and as usual insightful and entertaining lyrics and vox. I can relate. [ Reply to This ]
a therapy piece &mdash 01/22/07 - 11:04:31 PM
you know how it goes. clients!. i think working on this a little each night helped to relax. by friday, the lyrics wer'nt to hard to put down. i thought it would be another week before i had anything written. the singing saw guitar are false harmonics and the whammy bar. i had to relisten to this myself earlier because i almost forgot how it went. i'm sure there are meds for that!
Thanks Bud for all the listenings and support! [ Reply to This ]
In your relentless drive... &mdash 01/22/07 - 08:33:14 PM
...to become a British cult prog/glam/psychedelia merchant, you have messed up AGAIN with a nod to the Amboy Dukes... Yep, this one takes me on a journey to the center of your mind...or someone's mind...
You really are one of the ones keeping MacJams guitar junkies glued to their best set of headphones, Vic...
I want to believe that you haven't actually managed to get a theremin in there towards the last verse...
Another mix that rocks headphones...
And I think all lyrics about hating the 9-5 grind are more or less preaching to the choir 'round these parts, pardner...

Funny the Amboy Dukes reference &mdash 01/22/07 - 10:43:12 PM
I was going to make that same comment about a different song that Vic posted. I listened to the Journey to the Center of The Mind cut again and decided I was wrong about the guitar work sounding like the Dukes. Maybe I will have to listen again ... maybe I wasn't wrong. There are some sounds in Holman's guitar work that somehow reminds me of that group. Of course this song has a Beatles feel to it also. [ Reply to This ]
now thats funny! &mdash 01/22/07 - 11:21:57 PM
i had to relisten and yeah, theres the guitar on the right picking a pattern thats along that line. don't worry i won't be running around in a loin cloth. at least until the snow melts. as you know i am a confessed guitar junkie. luckily there are alot aroung here to keep my joneses satisfied. no theremin, just natural and artificial harmonics and a whammy bar.
Thanks Ed for all the support and comments. darn it's only the start of the work week! [ Reply to This ]
MOST HEART ATTACKS.... &mdash 01/22/07 - 11:46:32 PM
....happen on a monday morning.
i don't remember where i got that info and i'm not sure it's even true but it seems appropriate right now.
Great guitar work on this. The layering, tones, and such tastey licks. Love the octave thing during the solo. So many great blends and textures. Truely fantastic. Lyrics are great, susinct, witty and wise. My only critique would be right after the guitar solo where you go back into the intro music, have the bass play rock'n'roll eithth notes and drive it through to the chorus. Maybe a tambourine playing 16th note pattern too. I don't know...something to just keep that momentum going so that when that chorus hits it just opens wide up. I'm going on and on about this only because I love this song. Great job! [ Reply to This ]
i think i heard that too &mdash 01/23/07 - 10:57:26 PM
you probably will agree mixing can be like playing a instrument. same thing practice and learning a few tricks along the way. already got the finger tapping and slides working. luckily we don't have to restring the computers. doh! come to think of it i'm about to run a firewire cable to both my computers.
Thanks for the time to listen and comment. appreciated! [ Reply to This ]
Great Mix &mdash 01/24/07 - 08:44:24 PM
An interesting song with unique sounds. I like how you arranged all the different guitar parts into a nice, cohesive whole. There's a good deal of effects, which can often lead to a sonic mess, but you managed to make it work well. I love the chorus, your vocals multi-track very nicely. [ Reply to This ]
thanks &mdash 01/24/07 - 09:40:31 PM
i've been lookig as mixing things and around like i'm learning a new instrument. i think that helps and a lot of reading and experimenting to be sure. sometimes cool things have to go in order to fit in. of course i'm still figuring if i can squeeze just two or three more guitars in. thanks for taking the time to listen and comment. appreciated.

i've been interested in creating a wall of sound for a while now, so it's fun to throw in different guitars and effects to create a whole.

nice to know i'm not the only one thinking these things sometimes.
the chord progressions and modulations are great. especially that chromatic thing.
(feel free to ignore: you really captured psychedelia here - maybe the genre needs to relfect that?)

summer of 2007? hmmm &mdash 01/28/07 - 01:41:00 PM
i've been accused of the psychedelia influence for a while now, i original never thought of it that way. but i'll go along with it. i think it's my subconscience of what i listened to growing up.
Thanks for the listen and comment. Peace!

it's funny how you say "accused of psychedelia" - there's nothing bad about it, & nothing to be ashamed of. that style was very influential and led to styles we all know now, including ambient and trance... i swear U2 even delved into that, if that means anything.
go with what you're good at, that's what i say. [ Reply to This ]
believe me &mdash 01/28/07 - 08:51:01 PM
no shame. it suits me just fine, leaves plenty of room to experiment. and i still listen to the older ( and newer) albums today. for me it's my roots! ;-)

An early Bowie &mdash 01/28/07 - 01:37:08 PM
Very rich sounding song, splendid chord progressions and a neat vocalising job. To my ears this is an early bowie (again). Amongst the best I've heard this last month. Instant DL and fav.

Thanks Walter! &mdash 01/28/07 - 01:53:05 PM
another attempt at creating a big sound without synths. i really had to eq the vocals so they could fit in. i'll probably need a shoe horn next time.
Thanks for the good words. any bowie reference from you carries a lot of weight and honor.

a bit like late 60s pop remixed. Dark lyrics but very danceable. Kudos for making art out of your angst. Excellent guitar work. Very enjoyable song. [ Reply to This ]

like the... &mdash 02/11/07 - 03:59:59 PM
..guitar noodle that comes in after the pitch solo, just before the vocals come back.
it's cool to hear someone who is obviously a good guitarist, but keeps it low key.
i like to put great solos i'm proud of sort of back in the mix, so you have to be paying attention to hear it. not burried, just subtle.
anyway, cool song. [ Reply to This ]
thanks and welcome to mj &mdash 02/11/07 - 06:41:20 PM
i do try to keep guitar solos brief, but i'll build little parts. its all about serving the song. but at home jamming the solo can go on forever!

is my fave Vic song so far. It's taking me awhile to go through all of my new friends back catalogs, and I just got to this one. This is great garage psych, we need to do something together (i think i may have the perfect song). [ Reply to This ]

Perfection!!!! &mdash 06/04/07 - 06:15:16 PM
The music is powerful and seemless in its transitions! And the lyrics are clean - no shoe-horning extra syllables into a phrase (lyrics need to be clean and provocative; making love with the music- the angst of poetry has another genre- chap books!) - Your lyrics in this song fit like a fingerless black leather glove "roughly" caressing the music, like seducing a woman who has been caught up in your spell. If I saw you on stage, I would not be able to look away! Thanks, I haven't danced with wildhearted abandon around the room like this in a few years!!! The lyrics are so refreshing - not just another tragic whiney love gone wrong thing (save that crap for sappy country love songs!) - just Rock my little world, Mr Holman!!! - a bit of a mind trip/time slip (Freudian slip :-) ),like the Rocky Horror Picture Show! Very thought provoking! Amazing!! Your voice reminds me of a young Bob Dylan - so intriguing!!!! I'm entranced! And you uploaded this on my birthday! Sooo (explative)Cool!!! I still have my son's speakers - I bought them!!! - he can whine all he wants, till I can appropriate a new set. I'm so glad y'all are on MacJams!!! P.S. Love the Retro cartoon thing!
