Description:
Here's my submission for the 2007 MJ Drumoff. Don't Wake The Baby. The whole piece was programmed directly into ProTools with the Pen Tool. Special care was taken to add in timing errors and varying time keeping to make the piece sound as 'human' as possible. No loops, no real drums. BFD is great, isn't it? All that remained was a little fun with the mic for talk-overs. I could have carried on for ever and I've submitted this early but it stops me tweaking for an eternity and lets me concentrate on some 'real' music. Hope you dig.

I like a good show... Thank you! Macca

What did I get myself into- haha. Man, this is great! I thought about using a rock kit and going this route, but never in my wildest dreams could I have come close to this one. And yup, BFD does sound great- very authentic. The tempo change was cool and had me wondering how you did that. (written notes, or tempo change with Pro Tools) [ Reply to This ]

I listened close to hear the midi effect, but I never did. This is the most convincing midi drum session I've ever heard. For that, I will brew over it and wait to hear everyone elses jam before I vote.
I really like that you used a lot of white space to enhance the sound.
Very very very good work here Pie.

This baby rocks!
He even has the funk face on, so I know he's groovin' hard!
Fun bit that I'm sure took a lot more time than you originally ad planned for it.
Solid.

Well &mdash 01/23/07 - 08:14:33 PM
I totally agree with EE; this sounds like live playing to me. Pretty amazing, actually. The vocal bits are a hilarious touch, but add greatly to the authenticity. I love the beats. The rolls are great and very convincing. I don't see any reason why you shouldn't be tweaking this for eternity; I'd love to hear some bigger, tom-filled fills, going across barlines, and some more outrageous beats (though some of these beats are pretty mind-bendingly cool). But still, there's plenty of tasty drumming here, with that cool syncopated ride, all those flourishes and details with the hi-hat, grace notes and rolls... I'm floored to be honest; it would be amazing to see this played live.
O, and obviously the debate is over, concerning whether MIDI drums can ever compete with the sound of real playing, hahaha! [ Reply to This ]

Thanks for the feedback. I'm not familiar with all the terminology you used but I think it was complimentary. Actually I'm counting praise from you as high praise indeed in the realms of rhythm. [ Reply to This ]
Wow, Pie... &mdash 01/23/07 - 09:54:54 PM
That is one daunting opening salvo...
In a blind taste test, I'd never have picked this as programmed anything... It sounds like a loose and funky drummer having fun...
There's rhythm to it, and humor, and it's just the complete antithesis of what I would think of as "programmed music"....
Well. The game's just begun, and you've opened with a strong hand...
Can't wait to hear what the others come up with...

Really original approach to this excercise! Great, natural 'flow' of the 'skins'.

Tell us about the effects &mdash 01/23/07 - 10:49:13 PM
It sounds like you chose just the right reverb setting to give the set a "real' feel in a "real" room. Good stuff. [ Reply to This ]
Well... &mdash 01/24/07 - 02:59:50 AM
the beauty of BFD is that you can route each individual drum to it's own channel and control the wet/dry mix on each piece. Plus the fact you can mix in overheads mics, room mics, and PZM mics. You can also control the overspill of sound from one drum's mic to another. ENdless and daunting options. This of course is not mentioning the fact you can custom build your kits from 100s of combinations. BFD is a very awesome piece of software. it's basically a drum studio in plug-in form.

If I hadn't read your description I would've been positive that this was a live recording.

Bloody amazing! &mdash 01/25/07 - 06:58:11 AM
Never would have picked this for midi. This must have taken ages to do, but sounds like it was a lot of fun and probably worth every second!
Excellent!

Better than Memorex &mdash 01/25/07 - 11:02:35 AM
Astoundingly real. Also, very nice arrangement. I immediately order BFD. You should get a commission. Are all these sounds standard? Wow. And the picture is a classic. Sounds like a studio drummer killing time before the band shows (altho I have a feeling a real drummer couldn't have helped but play some faster runs, more rolls, just to show off). Some of the best studio moments... and its the studio in your head! I dig. [ Reply to This ]
Nice &mdash 01/25/07 - 11:29:32 PM
Great art; great drum sound; pretty good programming in about 10% of the piece, but 90% really boring. [ Reply to This ]

Yeah, I was just messing with you. It is very cool and well done. I'd say about 95% boring. Nah, just kidding man. 100% right on the money!!!!! [ Reply to This ]

I would never have picked this up as MIDI if you hadn't said so. Great feel, and the vocals are a nice touch. [ Reply to This ]
really midi? &mdash 01/27/07 - 08:50:45 PM
This is stunning dude.
I will have to order a copy of that drum gizmo... BFD you say? The programming is very clever. A drum sound is one thing, but being able to make that groove.. [ Reply to This ]
Whaa? &mdash 01/28/07 - 11:34:57 PM
I played drums in different groups for a few years, and I'm totally impressed! I'm glad you're talking about how you did this, I would have been dying to know if you actually play the drums or not. And I agree with EE, this definitely is the best midi drum session I've heard. Then again, it's not like we didn't know you were a good musician, but to get make midi drums sound like that, that's something else. Great job there. [ Reply to This ]
so freakin real &mdash 01/31/07 - 06:37:53 PM
I would never have been able to tell it wasn't real drums. such a huge sound. your care to make the playing nuanced, with a that live player variation, really shows off. not an easy thing to do. bravo pie [ Reply to This ]
BFD?!?!?! &mdash 03/15/07 - 10:48:24 AM
MUST GET BFD!!!! Amazing! Once I get BFD I don't think I'll ever leave the studio! Amazing job programming this. I would have never guessed in a million years that this was programmed. Wow. I'm blown away!!!! Tobin's right...you should get commision. [ Reply to This ]
