Description:
“Woodbury Suite” was born one August on a porch overlooking a beautiful deep water lake in a small Vermont town called Woodbury.

This first of the four pieces is called “Gone Fishin’”. I really like fresh water fishing. My friend Jimmy, in a nearby town, is consumed by it.

As with many of my tunes, this one tells a story. Jimmy comes by in his truck with the canoe lashed on top (as opposed to his pro bass fishing boat that travels at a zillion miles per second), and off we go to a couple of really sweet large ponds.

I recorded this on my National Radiotone.

Settle down in a quiet moment and check out the work of Bill Furner, who goes by 'thetiler' on MacJams.... Both in terms of playing style(s) and in terms of being someone who has gone after recorded acoustic tone in a very focused way...

I hear all sorts of touches of Kottke and Fahey in this... Along with, weirdly enough, some old Doobie Brothers instrumental and almost-instrumental tunes...

And I loved the Doobie Brothers...esp the early tunes.

I'll check out thetiler...thanks for the tip.

Beautiful work here. I like the way the pensive and uplifting themes complement each other and make of this a very warm piece of music. Your talent is evident. I'll go listen to the other movements. Thanks for sharing, -Sergio.

I'm interested in checking out that "80s" tune you're talking about on the Forum.
Always interesting to see about "modernizing" a tune (if it needs it)
I've listened to your work and like it very much.

Nice fingerpicking &mdash 01/25/07 - 06:59:07 PM
I loved the break and then the build that started about a third of the way through. This is a piece that could describe a vacation for me (since I don't fish.) Pleasant and upbeat, but also very relaxing. I'll be listening to your other movements as well.

I recorded these pieces a while back, when I first got the guitar. I'm happy with these pieces...but would like to revisit them, as I've gotten much more familiar with the National over time and know how to get more out of it now.

Oh...and, "yes"; I wrote Woodbury Suite while I was on summer vacation.

Thanks for dropping by.

very evocative playing - thanks for sharing the backstory. I really like your musicality - you've obviously got chops - but they serve the music and not themselves. Faved and DL'd.

Though he's now "out of favor"... &mdash 01/30/07 - 06:44:34 AM
....in the theatre world, Stanislavski once said: "One must love the art in oneself, not oneself in the art".
I strive to live by that creed everytime I pick up an instrument.
Much thanks, Bud. Your music has the same resonance to me.

delightfully warm and rich &mdash 02/06/07 - 11:57:55 AM
Not just the tone of the guitar, but the composition itself was really compelling... and the B section there in the middle was quite pretty, some very satisfying chord progressions and minor/major switches there.

Yup, you'll have to listen to "TheTiler" and "Cori Ander" here, a couple more stunning acoustic guitar players (and great guys.)

If you don't mind, I think I will have to download and collect the whole set here! :-) Thank you!

One more thing... &mdash 02/06/07 - 12:04:34 PM
Uh, two more things... when you assemble your mp3 file for uploading, it will likely find itself on people's iPods/iTunes, and people will want to find out "WHO WAS THAT MASKED MAN?" Please fill out the "Artist/Composer" fields of the MP3 tags with your name, so that you give yourself credit in your music. You may also want to put your artist web page in the COMMENT section, so people can find more of your stuff.

Secondly, very pretty photograph... you may want to drag the photo into the "artwork" section of the mp3 so it shows up in iTunes/iPod as it plays... these touches add to the impact/presentation of your production.

ttfn,
Drakonis

THIS RULES! &mdash 02/06/07 - 02:12:17 PM
I could just imagine sitting on the front porch getting ready for a fishing trip! Droppin trout! Beautiful song! Would make a great soundtrack for "On Golden Pond"

Fishing's fun... &mdash 02/06/07 - 05:16:32 PM
...and always an adventure with Jimmy. I'll be sittin' there, patiently waiting, while he's reeling in one small mouth, trout, whale after the next and throwing them back in.

But you wouldn't believe the size o' this one that got away last August! Let me tell ya...it had to have been...

Thanks for the listen.

All of... &mdash 06/10/08 - 05:56:05 PM
...the Simon and Garfunkel albums were big influences in my early playing. My brother played wonderful 12 string and taught me a few of their tunes and then I started to get the hang of what he was doing. I learned a lot of his tunes. Wonderful player...I'm glad you heard that influence. It's definitely there...

I really liked what he did after the split up...but, for me, the best music was when they worked together.

My wife's a gardner by trade. She worked for him the past two summers. Nice, unassuming estate in Connecticut. Says he's a really nice guy. Sees him playing his guitar in the sunroom a lot.
