I don't know what's different.... &mdash 01/24/07 - 08:18:14 AM
...but on my system and headphones, this has much more presence than Woodbury I... Capturing both more metal and more wood out of that National...
I'm hearing a little more melody/harmony in this section, and less of the Kottke-esque rolling thumb almost-banjo sorts of motion...
The recording seems to have a bit more air and space here, which is evident at that last harmonic... you can hear it ring a sec in a nice way...

Not just your system... &mdash 01/24/07 - 09:17:05 AM
I made the mistake (IMHO) of using a compressor with all of these tunes in the suite. The engineer said that was what the industry likes and I was thinking of shopping the tunes. (Never did, BTW). So the faster the picking, the less air and presence.
The guitar is so wide open. I regret that decision. Should have stuck to my artistic sensibilities instead of trying to please an entity that's beyond me.
I've flatted a couple of 7ths since recording this and like the results a lot. [ Reply to This ]

You slip effortlessly from one to the next. Very enjoyable, and the description is great, too. [ Reply to This ]
Hmmm.... &mdash 02/06/07 - 12:12:19 PM
Composition nits... the transition between the faster intro and the slower walking-bluesy-middle section seemed abrupt... not enough time for my mind to change gears. But I really loved the middle section, and I liked the idea of the intro and coda "end-caps", I'd prefer a little better transition is all. Other than that, another really pretty piece!

cool &mdash 02/06/07 - 02:24:17 PM
I like constructive criticism.
In terms of the actual idea, this is my favorite of the suite. In terms of development...it's the weakest. I've been looking for a bridge for some time now and not had any success. Probably because I like it so much and am being too picky. Plus, I'm working on other tunes.
Good points, Eduard. Thanks for your time and comments.

Ambling along &mdash 03/20/07 - 10:32:40 PM
I don't know, I like the tempo transitions. It makes me think of those walks you take where you're just chugging along a little, then you trot down a hill a bit, then uphill again...it feels right to me. This is my favorite of the suite as well. [ Reply to This ]
Don't get me wrong, Magritte... &mdash 03/21/07 - 01:28:38 PM
...this tune is very dear to me. And I agree that it works very nicely as is. I have made some changes since this recording, though, which really made a difference. Specifically: I flatted a couple of 7ths which gave it a funkier feel.
If I do make a change...well...hmmmm...am I overthinking things, here?
Food for thought.
Thanks for the nice comment, mon ami.

old post &mdash 07/28/07 - 05:21:37 AM
I really like the change up in the middle as was previously mentioned. This is great, and evidence of your skill as a guitarist! I look forward to listening to more of your stuff as I have time.
By the way I have found some tunes on MJ that seem to get overlooked or underplayed. How is that? I mean this took a lot more creativity and skill than a lot of stuff I hear that gets a ton of fans. I guess something loud and with a beat will always be more "popular" the same way some amazing classical pieces get ignored because they are "boring". Anyway good work! Sorry for ranting.

Hi Chip... &mdash 07/28/07 - 01:53:25 PM
...I'll be checking out your stuff when I get a quiet moment.
Thanks for the kind words. I like that you chose this tune. It's one of my favorites.
You're right...the major thrust here is the more electronic/electric stuff. There's some great stuff, too. It's also very much experimental. Get good feedback on song crafting and recording techniques. I love it for that. A great place to grow and meet cyber friends.
Looking forward to listening to your music. Thanks again.

snob &mdash 07/29/07 - 07:43:59 AM
Sorry if I was a snob. I actually like electronic music and the two songs I posted so far are definitely not classical. I agree this is a great site and I shouldn't be critical. Anyway thanks for checking out my tunes!

...I certainly don't think you're a snob. I appreciate everything you said and didn't take it as anything negative.
AND I appreciate that you're listening to my music.
Thanks, again.

Speechless... &mdash 04/06/08 - 04:33:41 PM
I'm too busy with studies and not having time for MJ, but I can't sleep today without backing to comment on this piece.
Mr. Bob, It's the best acoustical slide I've heard here for long time so. I'm truly speechless, the playing and the composition is grand classic. I don't know why I'm in the mood of some adventure/detective stories, cartoons. This is a true masterpiece! KUDOS.
Take Care

...these tunes (Woodbury Suite) were recorded in a studio using that two mic setup I told you about. I really like them, but am looking forward to recording them again, as I like the one mic (my Rode NT3) setup better for this guitar (like I used in "Hayseed").
Although these sound nice, too (and thanks, again), I feel like the Rode captures the twanginess a bit better. [ Reply to This ]
