Description:
This song, “Tracing the Sky”, is the fourth and final piece in “Woodbury Suite”. Unlike the others, though, it really doesn’t tell any story. I was just looking at the sky while I played and this came out. Tracing the sky seemed to be just what I was doing. Would that make it a cover tune?

I hope you enjoyed these four tunes as much as I enjoyed being there to write them.

I’ll post more tunes on my other guitars as time goes on.

Well now... &mdash 01/24/07 - 08:25:12 AM
The slide takes me right back to Kottke territory, and also gets me to reinforce my recommendation that you check out thetiler... Bill is a pretty good folk-style slide player, among his other talents... also likes to compose in suites and sections...

You're getting a nice sound from the National here again. I would love to hear a song at some point that combines this sound with a regular steel-string guitar in a mix, and/or a rock tune that puts this up against acoustic AND electric guitars... It's a good and useful aural color...

Resos are tough to mic.... &mdash 01/24/07 - 09:29:56 AM
...esp. when they're played solo like this with bass/mids/trebles intermixed. Not impossible. But tough.

At the time I recorded these, I had just bought the reso and had been writing on my classical for years. Those were my only acoustics. I'd sold my Martin D-18 to get the nylon string (sigh). So the National was my only steel outlet and I just wrote a lot of tunes on it.

I just recently bought a real peach of a Martin OM-21 which a lot of my reso tunes translate very well to. I'm writing a blues on it now which will feature the reso on fills and leads. Like to play it with a band, too.

I'm very, very much looking forward to getting a home recording thing together. Until then, I'll be visiting my friend's studio soon to record a tune or two on my nylon string and, maybe, the Martin.

Thanks for the insightful comments, Ed.

Bob

Nice stuff &mdash 01/24/07 - 05:02:07 PM
I like the sound of slide guitar. Is this a dobro? The shift between minor and major is nifty. It gives some variation to this piece, because, eh, you're a bit limited by the fact that with a slide you can't very well change the bass notes and go to a different chord.

Resonators &mdash 01/24/07 - 07:18:31 PM
It's a National Radiotone.

It's great for switching between slide and fingering. Action's set high for that...but not too high.

Thanks for checking it out.

Genuinely beautiful in its simplicity &mdash 01/26/07 - 04:08:40 PM
I find it extremely enjoyable to listen to music by someone who really knows his instrument and is able to channel his inspiration without trying to show off or getting hung up on technicalities. Your guitar playing has that genuine and spontanous qualilty and feel to it. I could listen to this forever...

Thank you... &mdash 01/26/07 - 07:45:12 PM
...for such a nice compliment. I just listened to 1001 Lacrime. Some kind of music. I'm very flattered that you like my music.

BTW: did I sell you a 1975 Strat a couple of years ago?

"Flying fingers" brings up some pretty cool, off the wall images.

goldfinches &mdash 02/06/07 - 12:21:13 PM
The little up-slides for some reason reminded me of goldfinches flying by in their little arcs. Dappled sunlight and clouds... relaxing and upbeat, very nice stuff here! Thank you for the beautifully composed and played music. What a fun ending!

impressive &mdash 02/12/07 - 07:32:05 PM
i found the entire Woodbury Suite very impressive, particularly 2 and 3. Like the last post, i'd be hard pressed to find anything critical to say about it.
After listening to these, i've vowed to work on my own fingerstyle pieces a little harder before i attempt to post them...
Good work.

You know... &mdash 02/12/07 - 11:31:51 PM
...I was starting to feel sorry for those poor li'l tunes stuck in the middle of the suite. I, personally, love them both. They always put me right back there, into a perfect place and time.
Very happy that you said that. Thanks.
I'm looking forward to hearing your tunes. If you play harmonica with the guitar, you've got my ear.
I've always wanted to hear a harmonica with Lowell George's "Missin' You".
You use that snakeoil on your guit?

"You use that snakeoil on your guit?"
Well, no...that's just a little play on words for my macjams alter-ego, and some late night caffiene inspired photography with the bottle i use for slide guitar.
i hope to post a few songs here soon, i'm afraid my tunes aren't going to be quite up to the level of many i've found here (for example: yours)...hence the alterego in place of my real name.

There's always another gunslinger... &mdash 02/26/07 - 05:56:36 PM
...out there who's gonna put you in your grave.
There's some players on this site who knock my socks off. And I know plenty of men and women here in the city, talent coming out of there ears, who practice all the time. Tough to keep up with that, technically. Just great, great players.
But even though it might sound trite or (gasp) cliche; it really IS what comes between the notes that counts. I know how you feel...I've felt it, too. In a big way. But, in the end, it's truly about what comes from your heart. Not how many notes you play or how fast they come out.
I'll be looking forward to hearing your music when you feel comfortable about it.
Cool slide... :-)

...these tunes are very special to me.
I will, eventually, record and post "Sin City Suite", which I wrote upon my return to NYC, from Vermont (same summer I wrote "Woodbury Suite"). More slide in that one.
Very happy you liked this.

It's just south of Barre/Plainfield/Montpellier area. That's where I go. Lots of good friends. Incredible countryside. Yes...lots of snow. And the summers/falls are just wonderful.
Sweden must be nice, too.

Sweet Suite &mdash 04/22/07 - 01:02:18 AM
I'm relatively new to Macjams, just getting around to a lot of other artists. Listened to the whole Woodbury Suite and really enjoyed it. Spent a lot of time in rural PA in the 60's and early 70's. You capture an eastern sound without getting too Appalachian. Liked the harmonics and glide out on Tracing the Sky. The Suite tells a great story, even the last piece. I can hear your affection for the place and the people.

...the fact that you can sense the scenes that I'm painting means a great, great deal to me.

BTW: Is that a picture of the Continental Divide? I used to camp up near Aspen and remember a scene similar to that in your picture...

Mt. Banner in the Eastern Sierra out of Mammoth. Lots of 12 to 14 thousand foot peaks like the Divide. Spent a few years in Colorado in the 70's, did some hiking and climbing there. Made it to California in '79. If you listen to The Road, a collab with my brother Bud, you'll here some of the story.
