Description:
Just fooling around with garageband 2 and the symphony orchestra jam pack. No loops used.

I'm not an musician at all so I'm looking for critiques "in lay terms". Does it seem muddled?

This is a work in progress.

Disclaimer: I finally played this on better speakers and didn't like the percussion so in trying to upload a revised version I deleted the previous post. I apologize to anyone who's comment was deleted. Let's try this again.

Hardware:
Mac, casio keyboard

Software:
garageband 2, symphony orchestra jam pack

I need this jam pack...

You are a musician, because you make music!

A nice little piece so far!

A good first piece....... &mdash 01/26/07 - 01:14:40 AM
I still think that this is a bit more than luck, and whilst you may not be a musician, you certainly don't lack musical knowledge.

It all fits together very well and has direction. It is not aimless or random in a fashion lacking musical know how.

I recorded the piece through my computer and so can listen to it at leisure. (This is possible with any computer and a bit of know how. No piece of music that can be listened to is protected from download/record because to listen means to download, in a way. I then just capture the output in a file).

I am awaiting your next offering with eager anticipation.

R.

Reinholt56, thanks for coming back and posting another comment. I saw your comment on my previous posting of this song.
My intention was to learn GB enough to be able to score my own animation shorts, but I'm having a lot of fun just making music.

If you're having fun..... &mdash 01/31/07 - 02:00:23 PM
If you're having fun making music, half the hard work is out of the way. The other half is: the right sound, the right mix, the right length of piece, the right genre, the right title, etc..

Once its 'all right', you release the piece (hopefully).

Good luck with your music creation/production.

lay terms... &mdash 07/09/07 - 09:46:07 AM
Hi there, and welcome to Macjams... very nice first piece here. Overall you did very well with leaving some air/space near the beginning, then building up over time. It doesn't seem "muddled" at all, in that you have one single theme and repeat it throughout. However, the theme itself has an unusual chord progression that sounds slightly strange to my boring/traditional/classical ears... but that's not necessarily bad, in fact it kept my attention partly because of that. The instrumentation is good, but you may want to pan the instruments ever so slightly further apart (they are all mostly centered.) The reverb sounds about right. There are many little tricks you will learn about tweaking the expression and attack on strings and brass to make them sound better, though this sounded quite good. And the weak point was the snare, it was slightly too mechanically regular... didn't have that human timing (although it sounded like you were in there starting to adjust it a little?)

Anyway, hopefully this is the kind of critique you are interested in... please feel free to respond in kind! (smirk!)

Drakonis,
I appreciate the thought you put into that critique. That's what I was looking for. All very good points for me to work on.

Mysterious Music Banner &mdash 12/27/07 - 11:57:50 AM
I was attracted by your music banner so I thought I'd drop by. Nice first shot at orchestral writing. I read Draks comments and I second the sound positioning... Listen to some recordings and also read the PDF that came with JampAck 4 to get the proper orchestral positioning (high strings to the left, low to the right, etc, etc.) Proper positioning will go a long way to creating the illusion of a real orchestra.

The sound isn't muddled (the instruments have enough space between them pitch-wise) but it does sound a little muffled. Mess with the compression and EQ a little and see if you can't bring in a little more overall clarity to the sound.

I like the melody and harmonies in the piece, so that's cool within the genre.

The next thing to try is messing with the articulations and such to humanize the performance and bring in some more sonic (timbral) variation (Drak mentioned that as well). JP 4 has some very cool performance related articulations...check out the JP4 pdf.

As R56 said "Have Fun!" and welcome to MacJams.
