It's songs like this that remind me music isn't about
creating commercially viable stuff all the time. The guitar
is creative and sounds fantastic. The flute also sounds
very good. Trying to find something to quibble on, but

beautiful acoustic &mdash 08/02/04 - 09:58:12 AM
I truly enjoy the sound of the acoustic guitar, and you play
it very well! It comes across excellently on this all-too-
short track.
The flute sound combines well with the guitar. I like your
sense of melody with it, all the little flourishes are very
idiomatic to the instrument.
I must be perfectly honest and say that I would rate this
song higher if it were longer! I do hope that you extend it
further in another version, because this track has great
possibilities! [ Reply to This ]

Great to hear about getting the flourishes that are idiomatic to the instrument
from an instrumentalist. That means a lot. Thanks, Cameron. [ Reply to This ]
More, more! &mdash 08/02/04 - 10:35:01 AM
I love this kind of acoustic guitar playing. Absolutely. I
agree with Cameron, if this were longer, to complete the
journey you have begun, I would give it highest marks.
And perhaps one more look at the flute part could take a
little more MIDI out of the performance (cuz you did such
a great job adding real articulations in more phrasings). I
have never used SampleTank, but the amazing guitar
sound you achieved has convinced me to take a look.
Excellent demo. Oh, and by the way, you were, indeed,
taking me to wonderful place with this song. Just needed

Mentioning that this took you somewhere nice... Thank you for that, too.
I look forward to discussing the flute part with you, if you have time, to get an
idea about cleaning up some of the "midi" in it, something I'm quite
interested in doing. Thanks for the listen and the comments. [ Reply to This ]

Perfect performance. Great song, pro-level talent and a
tight demonstration of your level of sophistication.
Is there a meaning in there? It's almost sad to think that a
song with this kind of "feeling" is bereft of any "feeling".

Ah so &mdash 08/04/04 - 02:53:46 AM
I certainly appreciate what you said about the performance, talent and
sophistication. It's just so great to hear that the song left that impression.
This song, The Walk Back Home, Morning Mist On Still Lake, and In Devotion,
all were free tempo pieces created to elicit heart and emotion, while
attempting to avoid the obvious pitfalls of such music. If this one seemed not
to have feeling, it didn't work for you the way I intended.
And yet you still said very positive things as well. Much appreciated, fosod.
Maybe I get you next time... [ Reply to This ]
Let Me Explain &mdash 08/04/04 - 09:10:23 AM
Aha. I think I was not clear. I meant to say that this song DOES, INDEED, have a lot of feeling. WIthout lyrics, I wasn't sure if you intended it to... though.
So: yes, much feeling. Mission accomplished.

Kind regards,

I agree the guitar is so well played and the articulation in
the flute is often good though sometimes the MIDI source
shows through. Only so much can really be done about
that. I'd love for it to be longer as well, as then the

Thanks, Mr. Fosod. Even being self-taught, or maybe *because* of being self-
taught, I have had stretches in my life where I played keyboards quite a bit,
but socializing was part of it, rather than instead of it. I found out in seventh

My thoughts &mdash 09/01/04 - 09:30:21 PM
Hi. I'm new to the forum and found your wonderful
composition by random choice. Thank God I did.
There is the beautiful Japanese tradition of Haiku in
poetry and Haiga as well where a Haiku and an image
are presented together as one. I believe simplicity in
visuals and brevity in speech and tone can be
powerful things. Your piece proves this. Just
enough. Sure it COULD be longer, but it doesn't
have to be. Yes, a Haiku as an instumental
composition works quite nicely. Kudos. [ Reply to This ]

Thank you for your comments, Mr. Z, especially given that this song is of a
much softer genre than the songs you have submitted (and played the hell
out of).
One of the most important things I appreciate about this site is that people
seem to be open to listening to music they wouldn't necessarily listen to in
other media, like the radio. I think for the most part they evaluate it on the
basis of what they hear, rather than on the basis of whether or not it's in their
favorite style. This gives someone like me, who does not write in the more
popular genres, a good chance of getting listened to and evaluated in a way
that is reasonable and helpful, and eliminates the "I don't listen to that kind
of music, period, because it sucks" kind of attitude. It makes the nice
comments I've gotten very meaningful.
It also helps me open up in the same way, for both my listening and my
composing. So, thanks, Mr. Z. [ Reply to This ]

You won't hear me say the same about the flute. The

sound quite unrealistic in places. This is one of those
places.

some of my favorite MacJammers, and I must say, I'm impressed with
this one. It's got a really contented/mellow/expansive vibe to it, and
it's so nice I could see this turning into a suite of some kind, or at least
a more extended composition. Excellent job!
The other thought I had is "I'd love to jam with this guy" since guitar is

description that this is apparently a sampled guitar??? I don't believe it!

What a gem!
The patience to give us just the (beautiful!) guitar, with nice pauses, for a relatively long time given the short total length of the piece was the mark of someone who knows what they%u2019re doing. For me it created great, fun anticipation for the flute in subsequent listens (there were many),.
When the flute does join, it%u2019s also beautiful and also patient, taking a very pleasant but somehow purposeful wander%u2026 till it decides to soar up to the second highest, then the highest note %u2013 holding both, then pausing%u2026oooh, goose bumps man!, and that%u2019s rare cause I%u2019m extremely picky%u2026. As the flute wanders on, it takes me some time to recover.
When it%u2019s done, I%u2019m miles away%u2026 thanks

Nice to hear from you, John &mdash 12/24/07 - 12:27:48 AM
I had just bought SampleTank 2, and I was going through its sounds to see what I had purchased. I came across the guitar, opened up GarageBand, and hit "record" and played for a minute forty or so, just to get a feel for the sound and how to use it. I went back to listening to sounds, and found the flute. Then I went back to the guitar track I had improvised and overdubbed the flute, just as a step past merely listening to sounds, not really even intending it to be a song.
I played back the two tracks and to my surprise, I thought what was there worked on some level. So I submitted it here. That's why it was short. I am glad you liked it.
I have written several songs recently and am writing for a client in between preparations for a Christmas Eve concert my choir performs (I'm the music director of a church). So I'm still at it. I just haven't posted my work here for a while. I'm very honored you'd even ask. Thank you. [ Reply to This ]
