Lyrics
i wonder around
go from room to room
everything is placed
everything arranged
off in the corners
shadows always hide
darke the secrets
of the past lives
some rooms are quite
some rooms are loud
wailing guitars
impatient to sound out
layers of paper
layers of paint
one hundred years
cover this face

chorus:
in this world the rooms are square
always something hiding hiding there
in this world the rooms are square
always something hiding hiding there

where are the ghosts
there no where about
i see worn stairs
the past left its mark
day after day
the walls asorb more
the hate and passion
gone through these doors
so many people
what did they do
i find little secrets
hidden from my view
a lever in my closet
with a red knob
whats it about
i never pulled it down

chorus:
in this world the rooms are square
always something hiding hiding there
in this world the rooms are square
always something hiding hiding there

bridge

chorus
in this world the rooms are square
always something hiding hiding therein this world the rooms are square
always something hiding hiding there

Cool Guitar
A hypnotizing mantra to the unknown and mysterious hidden in the ordinary. Nice lead guitar, upfront without being overbearing. Melds nicely with the laid back vocals! Good job!

Nice going Vicar...
You remain high...very high...on my list of favorite MJ-rockers. I love the "? and the Mysterians" style organ in this. Really yummy. Interesting, pensive and downright eeirie lyrics. Your lead soloing is wonderful as per usual. Your singing improves with each effort. Another fine piece of Psycho-tuneage from the undisputed Master thereof. An instant fave!

Be well!

ode to my house
there is a reason (obscurely here in this setting) for the lyrics. no organ, still all guitars. just drums on keyboard still. when i get the go-go dancers in here then i might rip out a farfisa organ tune.ha.ha. thanks for the vote of confidence of vocals, i try.

i need to think spring so i can get out of the house!

thanks bro!

BIG SOUND
yep - unusual theme, for sure. really fine music - you sound great! everything meshes together with a slightly dark tone to it, and it's full and intense. "a lever in my closet/with a red knob/whats it about/i never pulled it down" is a cool line. excellent energy in your mix! enjoyed the listen, anne

thanks anne
sometimes i can't help myself for writing odd subject matter. its a slightly odd tune in general. and all true, there really is a lever in the closet :-)

thanks for listening and comment, appreciated

no room
or not enough room. but square rooms what a concept.
But i think anyone stuck in glass house should use a stone to get out. Another great one Vic!!!!
Vic Holman said 3797 days ago (February 2nd, 2007)
square rooms
funny thing when i remodeled a few things i found some of the walls were longer perfectly square. i probably should have gone with obtuse. and why is it people in glass house houses never close the drapes? Ha ha!

your house
...has the same rooms as mine it seems. Buying old houses gives room for though. Especially of them who lived there before us. Like you say; "see worn stairs, the past left its mark".

The music is very well composed, arranged and performed. You have made a kind of sixties sound, and I think especially the solo guitar give me that feeling.

Good stuff:)

yeah it's funny when you think of a n inantimate object has personality. but old houses are great for that. i never was a real believe of ghosts. but the last old house i lived at.....well lets just say there were voices and a few photos that are not right.

Thanks for the listen and comment!

This is my third try...
...at leaving a comment...

Can't remember what I said the first two times... I think this is the essence of it:

I really like the lead guitar tone(s) you use, and I like the blended rhythm guitars and arpeggiated guitars, the left-and-right blends...
I love the chorus, and the vocal sound, especially on the chorus... Lyrics are great...

I find myself wishing at times for more melodic motion or something in the main verse parts, and maybe for some phrasing that's less tied to the beat, if that makes sense... I'm also finding that, depending on which headphones I use, sometimes the accumulated effect of all the flanging and filtering feels like it's a tiny bit too much... Of course the Vic Holman "sound" involves that multi-flanged blend, but I think when the guitar sounds stack up, you can use a little less on each guitar because cumulatively, they'll sound "wetter"...

I could swear I posted this comment already.... Did I put it on another song...

Anyway, none of this keeps this from being a very fine song and very fine recording that bears the signature sounds of its author. I like the wide range of your subject matter... Never typical lyrical territory...

Hi Ed
you must of been reading my mind. i'm in the process of another tune. stripped of a lot of effects. now its onto arranging different counter melodies and notes. now i just have to find the words for it. so good timing in making me think more of a lyric melody that isn't as much metered. i'm workng on it or trying. so i'm glad you bring these things up from time to time. so i don't get myself in to much of a rut.

as for the graphics. it's a combination of '50's black and whie clip art and rebuilding parts, or in some cases its original drawings, and adding other elements. since i do graphic work all day. i'm a little lazy about drawing at home anymore. even though my house looks like an art gallery from all the stuff i have done. at some point i will show those as song art. i just need to get pictures shot of them, i'm lazy about that too.

Also since i bounce the mp3 tracks straight from logic express the art can't be embedded. to my ears the sound quality itunes produces on the mp3 conversion isn't as good. could be wrong.

Thanks again Ed. appreciated

Do you do the distinctive artwork on these postings yourself?

I really enjoy them...

This song
resonates. In every place I've lived, I've always wondered what happened to the people who lived there before me. Where are they now? Are they still alive? Why did they leave this place? What were their lives like?
Unlike you I just never thought of writing a song about it.
Very cool and, oh, those guitars. Grant stuff. Kudos, Vic.

my house is 101 years old, i do know that it was a farm house with a apple orchard. no trees just alot of houses now. if walls could talk i would probably have a ton of songs to write about.

Thanks for the listen and comments!

Cool song
I like how you can make a dense arrangement without it becoming muddy. Everything sounds full, yet the essential parts never drown. Nice treatment of the vocals. It has a bit of a 70s sound, but I'm not sure what it reminds me of exactly.

thanks vic
for mentioning about the layers, i think thats where i'm having alot of fun. as for 70's, well i think it's just embedded from so much influences and i'm just spitting it back out.

BTW. Liked your tribute to the grand canyon. i've been there twice and to the bottom of the canyon. theres a lot of rattlesnakes hiding in the cliffs on the last leg down. sometimes you would hear the rattles in the crevices as you hiked by

Another winning track Vic
Great arrangement of all the different guitar parts, I also like the organ filling in in the chorus. Your guitar work is always stellar. I'd be interested in hearing you arrange horns - you have good ear for layering and call and response.

no organ, still all guitars. horns? car horns maybe. but true i'm discovering counter melodies and harmonzing, i should of paid more attention in musin theory way back when, i have to wing it by ear.

Great !
WOW ... I've checked many of your songs to see which of them i didn't listen to it and found this one. Mr. Vic, how can you do all these sounds ? i know that you used many acoustics in "Forever Yesterday" to make it sound this beautifully but HOW ?? i tried to do it but it sound really the same as one guitar (just more louder) .. ! This is a real great song, the vocal, the music and the writing !! MASTERPIECE again .. all of yours are MASTER. You're a real best musician for me .. not just at MJ .. in my life
Vic Holman said 3530 days ago (October 27th, 2007)
Hi Yeman
I have a lot of effect pedals. For acoustics, generally I play two, hard pan them opposite from each other. Also change the EQ a little different from each. Maybe a different chord inversion as well. Finally adjust the levels. It seems simple enough, but it takes a little work.
