Description:
I'm reposting this song with what I believe to be a major improvement in the drum levels. I simply increased the output level of the bass amp effect I used and it sounds 5 times better to my ears. Thanks for the help with this guys. I trust your input.
Katy was moving into her new house when I first met her.

Wow.. &mdash 01/31/07 - 03:59:30 PM
.. big difference Bob, sounds much better. The bass drum is, I'd say, a tad loud on my speakers, but overall this is a big improvement.
Top work!

You guys are gonna be proud one day when you turn me into a distinguished guy that mixes songs properly.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

you impressed me with your style on Sonhador. Hip Hop is not a genre I am too interested in, but your approach was very interesting and I enjoyed it and downloaded it.

Need Help Moving? &mdash 02/01/07 - 04:55:29 PM
Now that I know we're practically neighbors, let me know if you need help moving. It could turn into a really ugly recording session that gets us banned from MacJams.
Thanks for the comments.

Great polish.. &mdash 01/31/07 - 06:11:45 PM
..on this song. Bass and drums sound really good in headphones and the vocals are very easily understood but don't stand out too much. Good job. Jam on! [ Reply to This ]
Mixing Advice &mdash 02/01/07 - 04:58:30 PM
Thanks for your help. I'm much happier with the drum sounds and I think I'm just on the cusp of beginning to figure out what all those sliders do. That doesn't mean I'm anywhere near working them properly.

Drums still a bit unbalanced... &mdash 02/01/07 - 06:22:10 AM
The floor tom is just too loud & thin for most of the song, then when the kick comes in it's actually too deep. The tom being panned off-centre doesn't help, either.
Have you thought about adding the kick under the tom for the parts where there is currently no kick. I don't mean following the tom part exactly, just on the 1, or the 1 & 3 maybe. That would let you leave the tom as it is EQ-wise, as the kick would provide a centre. The kick would still need some low-end rolling out of it.
Then turn down both kick & tom a fair way - everything else is probably fine.
A dinky little trick for testing mixes is to
a) wait til tomorrow, rather than when you've been mixing on headphones all day &
b) put it through the smallest, tinniest speakers you can get your hands on & listen to it REALLY quietly. You'll be amazed at what it will tell you, that playing it loud won't. [ Reply to This ]
Way Over My Head &mdash 02/01/07 - 05:02:21 PM
wow. I hear what you're saying.... I just don't understand how to get there. If you lived near me, I'd have one great sounding mix in spite of the vocals!
Thanks for this amazing advice. I think I'm capable of listening through the poor speakers and giving myself some cool off time before posting the songs. Excellent advice.

Jiggly Arms &mdash 02/01/07 - 05:07:45 PM
So is my music just so show stopping that nobody noticed the jiggly arm animation I slaved over for an hour?
I don't see anyone except bug67 with an animated icon. By the way bug67, you rock. I drive a new 1978 Bus. [ Reply to This ]
Jigglyarms &mdash 02/07/07 - 05:49:35 PM
Yes, nice little animation. Interesting how only the star that you're looking at seems to be moving... but then, they all are. Wow dude, I feel like one of those friends who smoked a bowl. Anyway... I've been trying to think of what this reminds me, without luck. Maybe it's just little bits here and there of B-52's, Pink Floyd, Devo and Madonna, but without Madonna. The words are clever and vaguely sour, and I like them a lot.

Just the song to listen to when your at home with blood coming out your nose from a sinus infection. I almost forgot my pounding headache.
I like this - it reminds me of the Residents, the Modern Lovers and the Flying Lizards. [ Reply to This ]

Thanks

witty and unusual &mdash 03/21/07 - 04:38:24 PM
i like your voice -especially the back-up harmonies - and i think the lyrics are really well thought out. i like your number system. who needs to know how to read music when you can write a good song like this?
the distant deep bass/synth sound is really subtle and contrasts nicely with the poppy drums. i also heard the red chair!
you're a witty guy. i just listened to sieben and that was funny too. i'm going to listen to more.
great song. [ Reply to This ]
Manatee Chili &mdash 03/22/07 - 01:32:38 PM
Thanks for the comments - Funny, I just had Manatee Chili last night with a tasty side of Armadillo Pate on Garlic toast. Tonight we're having Florida Panther Chops with a Cognac Peppercorn Sauce, some Vine Ripe Tomatoes, Asparagus and a bottle of Pinot Noir.
You heard the red chair? You're the first! Thanks for listening harder than anyone on Macjams!

Odd no one mentioned Eno here - this could be on Here Come The Warm Jets - no problem. Excellent all the way around. I tend to like whatever idiosynchrisies come with the territory here at MacJams - that's part of the pleasure - so I have no crits. Excellent vocals and lyrics. Top notch! [ Reply to This ]

Hey Bud thanks for the comments. I have some Brian Eno on vinyl back in my studio. I don't think I know that album, but I'll check it out and see for myself.
What kind of dog do you have?

. quite a Gary Numan kinda thing you got going here Bob..
and I like that alot ... mix is fine .. I'd change that snare sound but that's just me probably. Above all catchy and groovy. Kudos. [ Reply to This ]
Replicant &mdash 03/31/07 - 07:53:33 AM
It's hard to deny my roots. Numan is obviously one of them. Thanks for the compliment!
The drums... wanna here the story about the drums? I tried a technique called "googlesearchformidifiles". I learned that if you open a midi file in Quicktime Pro and EXPORT it as a standard midi file (yes, there is a difference in midi and standard midi?) you can drop the new midi file into GB and it will create individual tracks of all the instruments played in that horrible midi file.
I used Nirvana's "No Apologies" (how appropriate) for this test. I Deleted all of the instrument tracks, except for the drums. Picking a drum sound was harder than I thought it would be and modifying the sound was even hard. At best, the math was there, so I had a rhythm to start out with for this monumental song of mine. With a few rearrangements, I had the drummer of my dreams - (Perceptualvortex was unavailable that day) and I was on my way to superstardom with one of Macjams Biggest Hits....
Thansk!

You're Moving &mdash 05/10/07 - 04:39:30 PM
I just listened to your song You're Moving and what a wonderfully written song. I can't help but feel a little hate filled by it though.
I remember my wife, Deanna Sue moving out of our once reasonably happy home 11 years ago. It was 1992 and we had a particularly horrible chardonnay fueled fight, when she announced she was moving out for good and no amount of sobbing was going to stop her.
Your song may have made her realize the gravity of her actions, the finality of it all and yes the shear pain in the backside that moving brings. Alas the song had yet to be penned by you.
Who are you, five extra arms? I'll tell you who you are, Mr. Day Late and a Dollar Short............Dork. [ Reply to This ]

I HATE moving &mdash 06/13/07 - 01:33:15 PM
This song made me laugh. I agree with Bud, definitely some Brian Eno in here (for some reaon The Fat Lady of Limbourg came to mind). I don't know what to say about the drums since I know exactly squat about them, but I do think the synthiness of them works well with the rest of the mix. [ Reply to This ]
