I think there's a spelling mistake in your description Macca!
I have a very poor memory for previous versions of remixes, so I'll comment as if I haven't listened before: love the intro, the somewhat random horns held together by the acoustic guitar (live guitar there would be nice). The harmony section works really well - Tusk meets the Corrs. The percussion just WORKS, but that final gong sounds kind of undernourished.! Love it, beautiful, in the Saturnine mould!

Good groove, well mixed, but odd arrangement &mdash 02/01/07 - 04:53:00 AM
Nice sense of placement & sonic balance on this one.

I'd have got into the groove a bit quicker at the start, as there's nothing to give away the fact that it's going to become both a groove & an actual 'song' once it gets going. That's just my opinion, but on a forum such as this, everybody is playing Mr A&R - and the trouble with A&R men is they're short on patience.

You could lose many a potential listener who simply doesn't wait until this piece gets to 'the good bit', whereas, as an established artist, you can spend 2 minutes on an intro because your audience know from past experience what to expect eventually.

And why wait SO LONG to get to the block vocal section - that was cool, but... right near the end???

Tremendous spaciousness... &mdash 02/01/07 - 08:12:59 AM
In fact, I'd make that as an observation of the quality of the drum and percussion mixes on all the MacJams Drum-Off 2007 submissions... every drummer/programmer/mixer involved demonstrated in their tune that making a great drum track involves hearing the space between and around the drum hits...

No exception here. It's another headphone treat...

Very smooth mix, that still retains life and air. It's musical, more melodic than many of your offerings... a nice emotional vibe to it... a sweetness...

Forgive my ignorance, but where do the vocals come from? I'm sittin' here in fascination as vocals and drums make a fascinating groove and mix that gets into the heartbeat...

Well. That's a pretty special track, to my ears. I'm wowed.

wonderfully atypical &mdash 02/01/07 - 09:51:42 AM
And once again, you just simply cannot be put into a genre here. This is a good example of how to bust outta your box and invent something new. I think if it were labeled as Pop or Mainstream, then sure -- the above commentor would be right. However, in my humble opinion, this falls within the "art rock" realm and therefore doesn't need to abide by any mainstream and expected rules of songwriting. I like the build. It's ominous and spacious -- you stick around to see the result.

Mimi's vocals are gorgeous - not one ounce of out-of-tuneness. Perfect. I love the mix. The percussion is gorgeous and creative. You're setting the bar here, guys. Thanks for your art.

GROOVE &mdash 02/01/07 - 09:55:01 AM
mmm - LOVE it when the groove gels. who can sit still? i love vocals like this - smooth, airy, throaty, little vibrato to distract from the tone. "arrested grace" - nice image. great pounding drums. ooo - sweet blooming harmony - how delicious. this is great - GOODBYE CHAIR!
enjoyed every note - anne

STOP IT! &mdash 02/01/07 - 10:52:26 AM
Because I've decided I need the extra five minutes of sleep every morning, I've stopped checking my e-mail at home and wait until I get into the office. So, naturally, I get the notice of a new song from you while sitting at my desk at the library. Of course, I can just wait until I get home that evening to listen, so here I am, my poor little iBook speakers cranked all the way up, jamming away. You're going to get me into trouble!

What you've done with this is simply amazing. I love the way the brass and percussion just kind of meander their way in to a solid groove. I love the way you use the brass as almost another percussion instrument. It's a great tune to begin wiith and this is a solid, solid re-mix.

Yeah!! &mdash 02/01/07 - 12:32:38 PM
Damn, this is powerful stuff! The way you arrange those horns and those big drums is too cool. I really like the way you leave so much room at the beginning, so that we listeners can appreciate each bite of the groove before digging in to the main course. Mimi's voice is sweet and complements the music perfectly. This has to be one of my favorites of yours, Macca!

timpani &mdash 02/01/07 - 02:11:21 PM
The perc is great. Especially the timpani/kettledrum (or what you call it) with the large room reverb. This new version is so well put together. It's like I have to sit still and listen carefully 'through it all' because I'm afraid I'll miss some of the goodness. And it's filled with it:)

Bravo!

terrific &mdash 02/01/07 - 05:24:27 PM
Man, you are getting to be the horn meister. So cool how it grows and starts to unfold. A most excellent mix. I also am a huge fan of Mimi's vocal. Was there additional vocal work here, not in the original mix (in any form?). The gray matter at the base of my skull started to gel. Warm pudding...terrific

Wow! &mdash 02/01/07 - 06:20:14 PM
That intro is killer- kinda like appetizers before the main course. The drum/percussion groove is excellent, and I thought, really carries the vox along nicely. And, those vox- absolutely beautiful!

The horns a very nice touch, as well. Top-notch stuff, Mr. Macaudion!

very cool tune!

the beginning reminds me of some soundtrack for 70s gangster movies of some sort and then come the voice (didn't expect the voice!). sublime. your prod is so cool too :)

Inventive collaboration &mdash 02/02/07 - 07:54:18 AM
I dig how you let the vocals be clean and transparent, how it all is skeletal, like raw emotion without frills. Nice invention and wonderful use of Mimi's performance.

Awesome &mdash 02/02/07 - 06:45:34 PM
Nice production, man! Those horns are just amazing--sparse bit perfectly placed. The way you mixed the vocals and structured the music around them is really inspired. I'm impressed.

Very cool &mdash 02/04/07 - 01:46:23 AM
Love the horns and percussion. Beautiful sounding voice. I will avoid the armchair A&R %*%68 and just appreciate this for what it is.... a very clever, melodic and exceptionally creative song. The music scene needs more songs like this- genre defying and imaginative!

Very impressive &mdash 02/06/07 - 06:35:32 AM
I think data did a remix to this as well. They both are so different (almost like seperate songs). totally transformed.

You are, indeed... &mdash 02/06/07 - 02:52:24 PM
...the MASTER! Most amazing percussion I've ever heard on MJ! And the mix is a mile wide...I don't know how you do it old friend. I sat transfixed "through it all"!

Be well!

just too, too, good.... &mdash 02/06/07 - 11:13:23 PM
...just like I just said, too, too good. I love the sparseness, the horns, just work so well & set a mood, only for that mood to become something completely different once Mimi's wonderful vocals kick in.
The percussion is something else!
As far as THIS 'A&R' man is concerned, I was completely captivated from start to finish!
Thanks Macca!

Great jammin along to too. Since lots of space and really hot rythms.

Love when the guitar comes in, it just holds it all together like glue. That dos'nt mean I forgot about the amazing intro. nice use of drums this is one of the more astouding songs that I have heard here on MJ. Glad you shared.

Everything about this piece impresses me &mdash 02/22/07 - 08:12:43 AM
from the killer intro through the vocals and unique accompaniment. You've got a great ear for space. Reminds me of what I like about Peter Gabriel - without the parts I don't like. That make sense? Excellent tune!

Grattitude... &mdash 02/23/07 - 04:07:01 PM
Thanks to everyone, for stopping by to share your words about this. Sorry that I'm seemingly too lame to keep up enough to be able to respond to each of you. I'd really like to, but life's got me that way, right now.

I do greatly appreciate your support!

Very spacious &mdash 02/28/07 - 09:02:01 PM
Very nice mix with a great, relaxed approach into the song (actually, the rest of the song might not even be necessary: that percussion movement is brilliant.). The relentless pitch correction on the vocal introduces a plastic-y vibe to the song that doesn't sit well with the airy, 'natural' sound of the rest of the song to my ears.

Very, very cool. Love the atmosphere! I love the way the groove builds slowly.
