Description:
There's the odd mild swear-word in this, but nothing that would really offend even the most delicate sensibilities;-)
This will be the first 'single' from my band's new album. The band is Norton Disney, the album is called 'Less'. It's what I would call, for want of a better description, 'indie-pop'. Full of tunes rather than just noise, although the styles vary from ballad to almost punk.
The whole album is a zero-budget, do-it-yourself, home-made project.
The verse of Weightless sounds like it was recorded in a bathroom, the chorus flatlines the limiters. That's all intentional.
I've managed to get the album on iTunes Music Store & now need to try to gain a little interest - in a low-key, zero-budget kinda way;-)
If you like this one (or even if you don't), there are excerpts from the whole album on the band's web site, www.norton-disney.com
Let me know what you think.
Lyrics:
You watch the TV when you come in from work
You could sit there 'til the end of December
It's hard to see for all the cr*p spread around
But they say you've got a beautiful mind
Your perfect job was back at "All You Can Eat"
Such a pity that they didn't understand
The empty boxes are a testimony
To the time you always put in for free
Ch.
Change your mind
I could care less
Dream so high
You'll be weightless
A pound of flesh, I guess that you can afford
Visit Shylock every week 'till November
And Julie lies & says your ass looks OK
In a track-suit that's to small for your thighs
The kid beside you has no chance in this life
Though you love him he will never remember
You saw a gym once but you've not been inside
And they say you've got a beautiful mind
Ch x2
(free-form)
Yeah, quit smoking too, put down that beer,
make the beds, wash up, clear the cr*p off the floor,
you wanna be perfect, wanna be perfect, just like me...
Oh, sh*t, gotta go, remembered it's my pilates class this evening,
yeah I do, yeah I do...
Ch x4

Great tune, great lyrics, wonderful singing. I really like the electric sections. The drums (especially the snare during the verses) didn't seem to integrate as seamlessly as my ears wanted, they sounded like they're played in the kitchen just outside the studio where the ac guitarist is being recorded. The track has such a nice made-up-on-the-spot live feel, with lush layered vocals added in, filling the track with a wonderful energy. (The final a cappella may be a tad too loud in comparison, even tho I dig it.) Very cool take on your subject matter. Love the song. [ Reply to This ]

Thank you for your comments. I'm new to MacJams as you will know, so didn't realise that new comments had been added to this song - thought I would get an email if somebody posted - d'oh.
Just a quick riposte to a couple of the comments...
Tobin - The "recorded in the kitchen just outside the studio" is completely intentional - I'm using the returns only from a 'phone box' reverb algorithm. It's actually the only reverb on the entire song. In the choruses, I just switch it off & everything's dry.
racerat - I don't know whether it may be considered 'bad form' on MacJams, but as I'm actually trying to break some ground for Weightless as a "commercial" single, I'm trying to persuade you guys to go off to iTunes Music Store & drop 79 cents/pence/euros etc in my direction.
Somebody please let me know if this is considered 'not the done thing' at MacJams, but as this really is a complete DIY zero-budget album, this is our only way of getting the material out to the public's attention. Hope you guys don't mind.
Of course, you can just come back here every day & listen for free, so no harm done either way, I guess;-) [ Reply to This ]

Enjoyed this song very very much. I really dig the indie/lo-fi/garage type production on this. Gives it a cool modern edge. Again, great song writing and vocal delivery...from the intimate verses to the big choruses...all great! [ Reply to This ]
truly well crafted... &mdash 03/21/07 - 12:11:23 PM
