Description:
Another song from the Archives. Like the others, this is me and my guitar, recorded on a tape deck and transferred from tape onto the computer. I didn't alter the recording, prefering to keep it in all of its analog glory. There are errors, technical issues, and other things we now frown upon, but there's something just a little magical about those old recordings from yesteryear preserved as is.
From the title you may have guessed that this about a damsel in distress and a shining knight. Not the usual fodder for things on this site, but what the heck -- it's fun to have a little romantic chivalry in our lives. So kick back, put that haunch of mutton on the fire, and feed the dragon, cuz a troubadour has a story to tell.
Lyrics:
Damsel in Distress
I was but a maiden when the king cast an eye
With slander Pa was laden and taken out to die
Then the king slithered back to take my love
I rebelled; I attacked. I was crushed from above.
REFRAIN:
And he rode out of the night
In shining armour
He rode out of the night
On fearless steed
I was a damsel in distress; I was a damsel in distress
Help me.
The castle dark had an evil power
The chamber stark in the prison tower
Then silence crushed the room after key felt lock
A sparrow in a tomb; a cage of rock
::REFRAIN::
The years drained away, no maiden, I
Awaited the day when I would die.
Then a glimmer grew across the field
And I suddenly knew 'twas sun on shield.
::REFRAIN::
The battle raged 'twixt king and knight
And this damsel caged hoped knight had might
Then the cowardly king quit before he fell
He said, "Take that thing out of her cell."
::REFRAIN::
And now I am safe in a castle light
The homeless waif and the shining knight
Yet I don't detest that king so grim
'Cause this sparrow's nest I owe to him.

Oh, sorry, this dragon's ears always perk up when hearing the words "Damsel in distress... help me!" :) Joanna, once again, such a great little jewel you wrote, sang, lost, then found and shared, thank you! This is great... it shows your story telling, your nice singing voice, and your knack for writing good solid songs. Another beauty!

I had a feeling this one would appeal to you, my dragon. I posted this one because of the 'enthusiasm' of the performance. I used to love when I'd have the apt. to myself and could sing at the top of my lungs. And damsels in distress should have good lung power, I figure. [ Reply to This ]

I just finished watching a Dracula movie where in his castle were ... damsels in distress. Although how much distress these women felt with the dashing and debonair Christopher Lee is debatable.
Thank you for sharing this. It's strange and interesting to me hearing your voice at this regsister and speed when I am far more used to a more smoky lounge, caberet chantreuse type style of singing from you. [ Reply to This ]

The truth is, I didn't really discover jazz until later in life. It came well after my guitar playing phase, so this recording is without the influence of CDs full of Ella Fitzgerald, et. al. I'm also more aware of disturbing my neighbors, so I tend to sing more softly to avoid that problem. Or maybe I've just mellowed with age. Whatever the cause, I thought it would be fun to share that 'other Joanna' who also sang and wrote songs. [ Reply to This ]
This is great! &mdash 02/06/07 - 01:04:40 AM
I can tell it's the same voice but it is so much... higher! You sound like such a kid, in fact! Not that you sound old now, but you know what I mean!!! Quite an enjoyable romp, this is. [ Reply to This ]
Thank you, Stun! &mdash 02/06/07 - 02:46:34 AM
You got it - I was indeed a bit of a youngster then. That combined with the fact that I lost most of my high register after I lost my voice for a year makes the sound quite different. I'm happy that you enjoyed it! [ Reply to This ]
