Description:
Yet another collab with brother Will. Will's poem from 2005 visit to NY accompanied by my attempt to create a jazzy coffee house atmosphere. All tracks live except for drum loops. One more Saturday afternoon session.

Lyrics:
where is the ghost of Huncke
and the ghosts of Jack and Neal
where is Allen and the great Howl
of the neon New York nighttime
where is Bill and the benny tubes and meth
in the deep tired pockets
of the imagination
scattered across the Texas plains
the back bays of Florida
along the straight hot
railroad tracks of Mexico
where are the lipsticked dark haired
beauties digging the wild sweat
of the sax man in the Broadway basement
bebop jazz of Bird Diz Miles
swingin’ on 52nd Street
the black and white AM of America
after the war when it was all
new and strange
and everything was happening at once

where but in the lost MTV’d
starbucked sadness of no zen
gapped and disneyed corporatum
not a paper in the gutter headlining
the death of the American soul
not a pasty of purity twirling
and smiling come on in
only the burlesque harlequin gloom
of sex and money
is all there is
is where
all the where is
is all is
is all
is

Glad you like it &mdash 02/04/07 - 11:15:48 AM
it's really fun working together on these and I find the less premeditation the the better. It's like opening a channel from NY to Cali and lettin it flow. Great poem to work with. Thanks.

cool man dig &mdash 02/04/07 - 02:13:42 AM
I love this loung-y stuff. The second stanza is my favorite. The first one feels a little name-droppy, but the second is ace, true and pure.

Thanks Phil &mdash 02/04/07 - 11:18:39 AM
Remember the lounge scene in the late mid to late eighties NYC. Carlo McCormick hosted a night in a cheesy tiki room on midtown that was always fun - can't remember the name tho.

Thanks EB &mdash 02/04/07 - 01:25:04 PM
I ran the bass through my boss pedals (octaver and chorus) for a little extra effect as well as using the upright profile on GB3. Will and I are havin a great time - glad you're diggin it.

Do you suppose that in the 50s &mdash 02/04/07 - 02:58:49 PM
they were yearning for the 20s? Is life always better in the past, or did people seeing Bird realize that they were living in a magical age?

Never mind: melancholy is my favourite emotion, and there is always something somewhere or someplace else to yearn for.

Nice work. Bit like beat poetry. Very cool overall. Or is that hip? Rad? Phat?

Every age is magical &mdash 02/04/07 - 04:46:44 PM
but magic is very hard to see. The refracted lens of time brings it into focus. Thanks for your cemments.

You go &mdash 02/04/07 - 04:08:36 PM
This is part of my turf, I've watched the changes, and you've got it down.
The music works perfectly with the poem.
Very nicely done, Bud...

Will wrote a poem years ago called Ti Jean about Kerouac. It's one of my faves - I might give it a similar treatment.

Well...sitting here in the mini-studio... &mdash 02/04/07 - 09:02:17 PM
...about twelve miles from the Lowell of Ti Jean... an autographed copy of Ferlinghetti's 'Jack of Hearts' behind me... Piles of Zen, Kerouac, Watts in the next room...

This brings back with fierce sadness the days when I searched out everything I could read by these guys... Guys who ultimately didn't come up with any better answer than whatever they were fleeing, but at least had the wisdom to know, and say, "THIS...isn't it..."

A great brotherly collab....

Ed

Ed - you put it so well &mdash 02/04/07 - 09:50:00 PM
about the unfound answers. I really have to send you the other poem - that's kinda the gist of it. Thanks for commenting.

i must be going blind. i didn't see this up til now. hope you guys didn't drink all the coffee. you're always pulling a different twist with each tune. your brother has a way with words. also got into that music bed. not sure was the guitar through a leslie simulator?

Hey Vic - no problem - same happened &mdash 02/06/07 - 11:31:18 PM
to me with your new tune. Sometimes it seems like the email notification doesn't work right.
Re guitar: I played it with the GB3 Clean Jazz setting after running it through the same old Boss chorus and octaver pedals I used on the bass, but juiced up more.
Will has beeen writing poetry for many years - he only recently started writing lyrics for our collabs. I think he's pretty damn good too.

I know the Steve Allen &mdash 02/10/07 - 05:52:05 PM
appearances - but never heard about any Jack Benny shows. Thanks for the notice and I'll pass the comp on to Will. He's in India at the moment - the Dharma Bum.

Scribbled secret notebooks, and wild typewritten pages, for yr own joy

wow. now i really feel like i missed it. seedy or not.

Accept loss forever

i really like the vocal delivery - the timing and tone of voice really emphasize the mood.

Write in recollection and amazement for yrself

someone mentioned beat poetry. yeah - that's it exactly.

You're a Genius all the time

Thanks for the praise - but the genius here is my brother Will for his inspirational poetry.
