Description:
The other day, returning from an evening walk, I stopped for a moment to watch the lights gleaming golden across the valley. They reflected upon the still, dark, lake waters, and--while I've seen the sight dozens of times before--I decided to try to improvise a song capturing the serenity of that sight.
This is the instrumental version. Another version with vocals is in the works :)
Many thanks to Bryn, who helped me hone the cello sound (Yes, it's the famous Fitch cello, with some help with JamPack 4:Symphony and various tweakings) and is working on mixing the vocals in the upcoming version.
(thank you, b!)
While I've been unable to capture a decent picture of the lights with my camera, I'm including a picture of a recent sunset across the lake--another 'light.'
Hardware:
MacBook, MAudio 61es Keystation
Software:
GarageBand 3, JamPack 4: Symphony, LogicExpress7 for final mixdown

I'm such a sucker for cello. You guys did great fiddling with the Fitch instrument!
But the piano really shimmers.
I love the slight panning. Perfect.
Definitely an "evening" sounding song. I'm curious about the vocal version but this is still beautiful as an instrumental. [ Reply to This ]

so calm and peaceful. Beautiful piano work and the cello gives a nice balance to the melody. This is so nice just as it is. But I can't wait to see what you do with it by adding lyrics. [ Reply to This ]
Simple and beautiful... &mdash 02/04/07 - 09:56:56 PM
The pairing of piano and cello is sweet and emotive...
Two instruments, two lines, and incredibly rich for all that...
Really nice, Mysti...

Beauty of the heart &mdash 02/05/07 - 08:17:12 AM
Cat, just as the beauty of the sky is reflected off the lake, the beauty of your heart is reflected off this composition. Such a lovely piece; I love it just the way it is.
God bless,
Rick

distilled serenity at dusk &mdash 02/05/07 - 12:56:40 PM
Very nicely captured indeed. The little repeated piano "ripples" you did really give a feeling of light sparkling off the surface of a lake, and the longing cello accompaniment creates a softness of dimming light. I'm not sure how you did that, but you seem to be able to capture and convert beautiful scenes into aural panoramas... brava! Do you mind if I take some notes here, so to speak? :-) This is definitely something I'd love to learn to do!

All I can do....... &mdash 02/05/07 - 01:31:26 PM
All I can do is Ditto EJH. He says all the 'technical' stuff I would have said.
I love your musical interpretations, and simple themes mean tunes are uncluttered, or easier to remember/hum/whistle.
The song image is very apt. The particular sunset cannot be reproduced naturally ever again, every sunset/sunrise is unique, only via your electronically-captured essence can you or anyone appreciate (somewhat) the view your eyes witnessed that one lost moment in time.
Your image is valid forever, as that one beautiful moment in time.
Thanks for sharing.

ah piano my favorite &mdash 02/05/07 - 02:00:41 PM
your piece is like a ripple of time, so undulating, serene and calm. this track helps me imagine walking with you talking about how beautiful life's creation is.
My only suggestion is: i would love to hear the main piano play a melody with the cello to add drama to piece maybe for a resolve at the end.
Thank you Cat

Loverly! &mdash 02/05/07 - 10:33:19 PM
I've said this before, but I love it when you post instrumentals. Your voice is so extraordinary that I think your wonderful music sometimes gets missed, so I love it when you let the music shine through. I'm also looking forward to hearing this with vocals, since I think it will be just beautiful. [ Reply to This ]

The ghostly, synthetic morphed cello sound is particualry effective on this (as I suspected it would - except it has an even better sonic quality that I realised)
Shimmering lights on a bed of modulated Chamberlain bliss!!!

Love the moody piano and the way the cello plays off it. I'm really looking forward to the vocal version Cat. It's gonna be beautiful.
