I can say with a lot of confidence that this is my favorite of your solo works EVER and that includes Sun Dogs. I've had the good luck to be listening to a sneak of this for a few days and I've been wearing it out, playing it over and over. I really enjoy the addition of the bhangra flute and the few extra gleetchlab sounds and the strings on the outro in this version. Vac is great, I love these riffs.

Downloaded, faved, boogied to a-go-go.

I'm glad you like the additions... at some point I just have to stop tweaking the dang thing and call it done :) Thank you for the early vote of confidence and the title suggestion, which I think is perfect. I'm stoked that you dig this so much, Lisa.

how cool is that &mdash 02/06/07 - 09:48:58 PM
How did you do those vocals? Convergent forces of funk, space time continuum, and groove delectables from the garden of Dave. Outstanding. Loved the artwork as well.

The vocals are from the zero-g World Pack collection "Deepest India", and I thought they were beautiful and rocking. Thanks about the art; it went from figurine to photoshopped song art this evening. Glad you like this, Karma!

Thanks, glad you're digging this. The vocals are all forwards, chanting from India, and that awesome guitar was recorded in this very room almost exactly one year ago!

...is when some people get to be geniuses AND jugglers... THAT'S unfair...

I flat out love this... David, I can't even tell you how good I think this is...

Ed, you cracked me up here. I'm glad you flat out love this; this is ear candy to me too, thanks to Steve's playing and those lovely voices. All you little people along the way have been critical to my improvements, so yes, I will be glad to share the wealth. After my first million.

...... for your amazing drums Dave. Steve sure knows a thing or three about riffing. This is one of the MJ tracks I've been least able to sit down to - my revolving chair sure got a workout, but I must get cordless 'phones one day ;)
One of the standout tracks for 2007!
What a lot of fun :)

Thanks, man. That's a statuette of Nataraja (dancing Shiva) in my living room. Kristi took the photo while I held the light sources in place, then I spent a while in Photoshop livening up the dance. The blue lightning behind him is a Luminglass. I'm pleased with the way it turned out, and I appreciate the compliment!

This is sooooo nice. Very fresh. The tune kept twisting and surprising me all the way through. Great arrangement and I especially loved the the way you used the vocals. (Kind of reminded me of Deep Forest's first album with the singing pygmies.)
This song has my iPod's name written all over it. Best thing I've heard here at MJ in quite a while. Many thanks.

Wheeew! &mdash 02/08/07 - 02:20:10 PM
Really great sounds you have here. The ethnic or foreign-sounding vocals add mysticism to this song. It has a very infectious beat that makes you shake your head and tap your feet, and God forbids you listen to do this while you're driving and start bobbing up and down in front of the steering wheel. This has to have a no-driving or no-holding-a-sharp-instrument advisory to it.

Leon &mdash 02/09/07 - 01:39:38 PM
Yes, this could be really dangerous with sharp instruments around, heheh. Those vocals are cool, aren't they? I love the sound of ethnic and tribal chanting and it really fits with the groove, and Steve's exellent bass and guitar work here. I think :) Thanks for listening, Leon!

embodiment of dance &mdash 02/09/07 - 03:41:33 PM
Sheesh, how do you extract the essence of "ooh, I gotta get up and dance and bounce around"? Tres Cool... great beat, super choice of percussive effects, sound effect candy, chants, and yes, that tastefully amazing bass and guitar... great mixing. Why do I see Lisa dancing and shaking her flowing hair in wild fits and spasms to the naughty-raja? Good stuff, Dave!

Eduard &mdash 02/11/07 - 02:26:04 PM
Hey, you see Lisa doing that too?? I'm glad you enjoyed this mix, Drako, thank you. In this house, the essence of "ooh, I gotta get up and dance and bounce around" comes from the belly dancer... I mean, we've been introduced to a lot of awesome world/dance/world-dance music thanks to Kristi actively seeking it out for dances and classes. I think that Banco De Gaia and Transglobal Underground are the two groups that most inspired this song, and my aesthetic sensibilities owe them much. Thanks for the kind words, Eduard!

Unusual style from you, very unlike "your" sound but full on riffy/catchy! Good blend of cultural beats and melodies. The vocal tracks are great - very world hip-hop. Dance chant! This is a unique blend of influences and sounds. The bass thumps along in a lively way and pins down the groove through all the various riff directions. Punchy and playful!

Interesting integration of theme, visual, music &mdash 02/10/07 - 03:51:10 PM
I'm reading an interesting book now about "Utopian" myths in Western thought and how they have served as excuses for all sorts of weirdness and mayhem. By contrast, the image, the theme and the music all fit together here in a more integrated and cyclic world-view (rather than "progress" toward the "ultimate state"). Nice.

[ Reply to This ]
truthtable &mdash 02/11/07 - 02:51:57 PM
Cyclic world views might be derived from closer observation of the natural world than linear ones. Everything in nature cycles... seasons and the ebb and flow of everything: generations of plants and animals, and their relative populations. In the big picture, a cycle of creation and destruction seems like an appropriate paradigm, a pattern for what happens at every scale.

But the personal, self-centered paradigm begins at your own life and ends with your death... a linear journey, where the dream is to be your best and acheive utopia before the end. I could imagine how modeling your thinking that way could help rationalize the weirdness and mayhem of a self-, culture-, or species-centric drive towards utopia.

Thanks for listening, truthtable, and I appreciate that you identify my theme with the more integrated and cyclic world view!
