Description:
Me and my new Garage band; first effort with the firewire solo. This is a song written about the way I felt in the days after my mother died. Forced to drive through my old neighborhood on the way to the funeral home, I was confronted with many conflicting emotions. So, here it is.
Lyrics:
Driving not fast I take the long way home
Turning in every direction but the one I had known
I try and let Jesus in can't seem to free up the phone
So I cry and drive and I turn and moan
And I don't believe I was everything you needed
When my inner-voice's calls to help you went unheeded
And I Come to an abrupt stop
Creep out into the intersection, I'm hesitant
My life's little compass needle spins are more evident
Today
Life is lesson in saying goodbye
From the nipple to your Momma from your lover to your child
Everything worth loving is worth tears bye and bye
My tears are falling fast jumping from my cheeks, oh my
My view is blurred and I can't see the traffic coming
I swerve to avoid a pedestrian thumbin
And I'm running out of neighborhood
Don't know what I'm doing down here anyway
If anyone's left they'll be leaving soon in so many ways
After today

Really nice... &mdash 02/12/07 - 09:42:05 PM
folk song... I like this a lot. What life deals finding its way into a song, benefitting the listener as well as the very good song writer-singer.
Really nice harp there. And some tasteful acoustic riffing. Kudos to the GBand!

That sounds familiar.
I've had to tone it down, too. Great community.
Welcome.

Exellent &mdash 02/13/07 - 10:44:59 PM
way to frame the stuff that bubbles up in us when we are that vunerable... you really captured how these emotions and memories blindside us... I love it when a song connects on this level... and I think your voice is perfect here...
but i have one nit-pic... the percution doesn't fit the song... the song breathes but the drum loop is rigid... so sometimes they sound out of sync... the drums aren't even nessisary for my ears, but if they are going to be there, you need to consider what a drummer would play...
all thoughts are to be consumed with a grain of salt... welcome to MJ [ Reply to This ]
Thanks Scott, &mdash 02/13/07 - 10:58:55 PM
I did struggle with the rhythm and I couldn't hear the click track, so I searched the GB library for a rhythm to keep it all together. It seemed to be as close as I could get it (Motown #16). I don't really know how to lay it down without using the loop, but I hope to learn soon. Suggestions as to how to get started? [ Reply to This ]
Click track? &mdash 02/13/07 - 11:09:16 PM
I will almost always play with a click track or use a drum loop as a rythem bed while recording... that doesn't mean it will have to be in he final mix... it might be that only your guitar and voice make the final cut... sometimes that is all a folk tune really needs...
great tune [ Reply to This ]
Sounds good! &mdash 02/14/07 - 02:34:28 PM
Thanks Estelle &mdash 02/14/07 - 07:33:26 PM
Funny, I learned to play harmonica as a way to quit smoking; it worked. Maybe you can try it to kick old "cigarette man" (great writing; sweet harmony). Thanks for listening. [ Reply to This ]
Hey Joe! &mdash 02/14/07 - 05:17:25 PM
I like the guitar, quite a nice finger picking pattern you have there! Anyways, glad to see you here!
I have a nice little riff you may like in this song, give me a yell and we'll chat about it!
Good job!

Glad you are enjoying my music; collaberating is something I'd like to do but haven't got the fogiest notion on how to go about it yet. Thanks for stopping by. [ Reply to This ]
Nice &mdash 02/17/07 - 12:18:48 AM
Joe, this is a touching piece. Personally, I don't see it as just a coincidence that you had to drive through your old neighborhood on your way to the funeral. To me, that symbolizes a great deal, and it's very moving that you reflected on that in this song. I'm sorry for your loss and this is a wonderful tribute. PS, I love the sound of the Yarri. I definately have to get my hands on one of those. Welcome aboard! [ Reply to This ]

You've made an excellent point there. Your music is certainly reflective of your sensitivity, as is your above comment. Thanks so much :)
As for the Yarri, that baby is 22 years old this summer and it's been a nice friend. I've never played a more responsive guitar, fits any mood I come up with. So you're an Alvarez guy too! This recording thing is new to me and I can't wait to try again. Thanks for coming by, I look forward to hearing more of your music. [ Reply to This ]

life is a lesson of goodbye, I wonder what the honer harp is all about. I realy like this one thanks for sharing [ Reply to This ]
Hello ego(voota?) &mdash 02/18/07 - 12:32:46 PM
The "Hohner Harp" is a slang term used in the acoustic-folk-rock-blues circles to refer to a Hohner Harmonica, sometimes refered to as a "mouth-harp"....at least I believe that's where the term comes from. Sorry, I always call it a "harp" for short. So happy you enjoyed it. Thanks. [ Reply to This ]

Stan Rogers.... &mdash 02/19/07 - 12:35:45 AM
why does that name ring a bell? Did he do that song about the "field behind the plow?" What time of year is that festival? I love the music of Canada and I don't exactly know when I first started liking it. Recent interests have been Cape Breton musicians but I think it started with the Lowest of the Low. FINE Guitar and Harp work in a very intimate Production environment. It is near and well articulated.
A FINE Listen.

This has interesting lyrics. I particularly like the line about life's little compass although I would have used "more real" rather than evident because of the double meaning in the sound. I really like your songs Joe. I'm sure you know that you are a good writer and I hope there are a lot more where these songs came from. I have a song called Indiana, which has a similar theme; it's about Will Greer and coming home for a funeral. It will be on the next cd. We certainly seem to share common themes and styles...which is probably why I think you're really great :-) [ Reply to This ]
Yeah, &mdash 03/03/07 - 11:29:41 AM
Is that why I'm running around the room saying "I'm not worthy, I'm not worthy!" Thanks for the good words Tom; interesting idea you had with the word "real". I'll see if I can find those songs you mentioned. I had better find my anti-manic medication too.:-) Hope to hear from you again. ..........Joe [ Reply to This ]
sad but good &mdash 03/06/07 - 08:55:06 PM
i really like these lyrics.
only one suggestion: when you sang "abrupt stop" i sort of expected a stop in the song, yet the guitar kept going...
thanks! [ Reply to This ]
Cool idea; &mdash 03/06/07 - 09:27:07 PM
I've used a stop in another song, but hadn't thought of it there. Will definitely consider that idea for a possible remix; not sure of how it would work. I like the bounce from the D bass to the Bm because the ear is hooked by that; I'm not sure if the stop would alter the ear's perception and distract from the lyric or not distract at all and emphasize it more. I will consider it seriously though, thanks for the idea. Maybe just an abrubt sound would do, you know a percussion instrument of some sort. Cool; I will work on it. :-) [ Reply to This ]
