Description:
A fingerpicker that sort of jumped out of me the other night.
Lyrics:
Standing at the edge of this long day
The color slowly drains away to gray
The twilight always comes but never stays
Surrender to the night
Looking at the embers fading light
Wondering if the flames will reignite
With one more chance I might just get it right
Surrender to the night
Watching as the clouds obscure the stars
Hoping to strum just a few more bars
Wishing I still had time to fix the flaws
Surrender to the night

Nice one JP &mdash 02/10/07 - 04:56:53 AM
Really nice, guitar work brill, and especially vocals, I like the emotion in your voice. Not forgetting the whole feel of the song etc.
Definite fave.
Thanks

I appreciate the feedback. I held on to this one for a couple of weeks, thinking I'd do something more with it, then decided to post as is...

Nice lyric, too. Did you play two different guitar tracks? A nice pleasing flow to the melody and song, with a nice change-up at the end to top it off. . - Harold [ Reply to This ]
Thanks Harold.... &mdash 02/10/07 - 11:09:47 AM
Yes, I ended up with two different guitar tracks. Thought I might post it with just one, but then I chickened out. That second track does wonders at covering up little glitches in the first track.... [ Reply to This ]
really nice &mdash 02/10/07 - 08:39:49 PM

Yeah--I guess that third verse is kind of related to our posts about the late night third set...or related to death.....or something.....
Thanks for listening--Peace [ Reply to This ]

the firelight feel to this - that time of day is my favourite when the sky is that deep blue.Infact its a great time to be outdoors writing songs but you can only do that here in the uk for about 4 months of the year.Great harmonies - I dont do them myself very often but when I do,I always find myself trying to fill in for what should probably be a girls part way up high and have to croak through it and turn it down in the mix.Your high pitch sounded not too bad at all.well done [ Reply to This ]
Thanks Paddler &mdash 02/12/07 - 01:11:46 PM
There's a woman I used to sing with a lot who has a beautiful voice--unfortunately she moved to a town about two hours away, so we don't get to sing together much anymore. I WISH she was around to do some of these harmonies--she's always dead-on pitch and I'm not! Maybe I'll pursue some remixes with her someday....
THanks for the listen [ Reply to This ]
Nice &mdash 02/15/07 - 08:28:48 PM
Simply sweet. Really created a pleasant tune here, reminiscent of the style of tunes found on the Beatles Abbey Road or White album. Imagine if you you had Crosby Still's Nash & Young type group doing your harmonies here. Anyhow, you got yourself a nice tune here. Thanks for sharing. [ Reply to This ]
Thanks for the listen... &mdash 02/16/07 - 12:06:15 AM
...I couldn't ask for any better comparisons than that! Yeah, I wish I had some singers to do these harmonies with me. For one thing, I can't really hit them dead-on by myself. For another, there's nothing like the feeling of real live harmonies reverberating in your head and chest--it's a physical experience that for me is really only surpassed by....well...you know the other one I mean. I'm currently playing in a rock band where we do very little harmonizing and it kind of bums me out, but the other guys just don't want to put in the time and effort it takes to nail good harmonies. Rehearsals are more like a big smoke and drink fest rather than any hard-nosed practicing---guess I can't complain too much about that! [ Reply to This ]
Simple songs are the best &mdash 02/16/07 - 10:36:02 AM
Somehow I'm gettting a Beatles vibe out of this. "Mother nature's son"? Or something else off the white album.
Very nice song, this. Lyrics, vocal arrangement, and guitar picking are all great. Hm, the two guitars sometimes do run away from each other a bit. [ Reply to This ]
Thanks Vic! &mdash 02/16/07 - 12:39:38 PM
Yes, you are right--those guitars wander away from each other a couple of times. Funny how I didn't notice it at first, but now it's glaringly obvious to me--kinda like when you miss typos while reading because your mind fill in the right thing.
I'm so lazy, and so pressed for time, that I rarely take time to fix these things...every track is pretty much a first or second take, then on to the next thing....
Thanks for the listen!

realy realy good. I am a big fan of David Gilmore and your singing and playing reminds me of him Hope that is not offensive. What a reflective atmospher you have created, into my ipod it goes thanks [ Reply to This ]
No offense, my friend &mdash 02/16/07 - 03:22:58 PM
I love Gilmour's playing and songwriting--never really thought of him while composing this one, but his influence is probably with me no matter what I do.
This one sprang from a little fingerpicky exercise pattern type thing that I was fooling around with--something I was playing at night in a darkened bedroom to help my kids fall asleep. The first lyric came to me, and I had to practically run to the computer because the rest was spilling out and I wanted to get it down before I forgot it.

Put together really well Jim &mdash 02/16/07 - 04:10:57 PM
Really enjoyed this Jim - a lovely Beatley sort of feel with a little West Coast 70s thrown in. Very nice vocals too. The delay/reverb on the guitars (especially early on) could maybe have been toned down a little for my taste, but it works nonetheless - just seems to throw things out rhythmically in a few spots.
However, I really like this - it seems to have a special innocence which we don't hear much of these days. Good work on that high harmony especially - I know just how difficult it can be to get those so tight.
Cheers,
Neil [ Reply to This ]
Thanks Neil &mdash 02/16/07 - 05:36:22 PM
THe reverb may a bit heavy, but I think it's more likely my imprecise playing that's throwing the two tracks out of whack just a bit. Didn't use a metronome or count in on this one, so it was hard to start that second guitar track at just the right time...
Thanks for the listen and comment

very nice &mdash 02/17/07 - 02:39:23 PM
i really like this. pure and simple.
and love the rhyming scheme: making "flaws" the actual flaw itself is perfect!
thanks [ Reply to This ]
Thanks man... &mdash 02/17/07 - 04:47:55 PM
....You know, I never thought about the imperfect rhyme being the word "flaws," but sometimes stuff just works out like that. Thanks for being so perceptive!

a little here and there &mdash 02/27/07 - 09:49:47 PM
a touch of bass is needed. There is no bottom the tune is all highs.
I wasn't expecting something pretty from you. this is a great sounging song but im not sure the fx on your vox works for me.
im more a purist. you voice is cool but id bring it closer in the mix
more up front
there is also room for another guitaar p;aying the chords in a diffrent place on the fret board in some parts
just some thoughts man
enjoyed the structure
is there a bridge
i listen to more of your stuff asap [ Reply to This ]
your vocal is transformed digitaly &mdash 02/27/07 - 09:58:03 PM
can you harmoniz the lower vocal part youself...it would sound more real
and an intro and ending as well as a bridge...
second listen
i only coment cause you asked
my old pals would have told me to go finish the thing
there is a lot of that on MJs
just a couple intro chords that could also double as a bridge
again great tune as is im just a pain
i like the ending though maybe a slow fad i dono just thinkin [ Reply to This ]
Thanks for elaborating... &mdash 02/28/07 - 07:50:06 PM
I really appreciate honest insights and critique. I would like to re-work this one, if nothing else, just to tighten up the sloppy doubled guitar. The vocal is actually all real--no digital harmonizing. It does have some sort of standard "Male Rock Basic" eq applied to it, or one of those standard GB settings. [ Reply to This ]

Sweet track &mdash 03/03/07 - 02:48:36 AM
Wow, this is a really nice track - the guitar playing is great, but the vocal harmonies really stand out on this track. Love the
'strum a few more bars' line, really whistful.
Nice work - i surrendered to this song.

I agree with a few of the other posters, this really put me in the mind of the beatles. Which is a wonderful thing in my books!
beautiful song and great, great singing. Guitar sounded just fine to me.

Funny how music can just be "waiting there" for you...could be in the most ordinary circumstance...
This is a really nice piece. Speaks to me and, I imagine, many of us. A piece of beauty...glad you were able to capture it...those "jumping tunes" can be elusive at times.
