Keywords:
Beatles (9)George Martin (1)Wizard of Oz (2)munchkins (1)work (19)alarm call (1)hammond organ (3)psychedelia (2)
Description:
A song from AmokOpera about the joys of work.

The beginning is supposed to munchkins, those hard working decent folk from the Wizard of Oz.

The intial orchestral phrase makes reference to the era of British light orchestral pieces heard on the BBC in the 1950s (specifically Worker's Playtime where factory workers were played music in an attempt to improve production)

It's gets a little weird at the end as I started to make more references to my own working life and returns to a psychedelic Wizard of Oz meets George Martin.

Lyrics and melody by Graeme Hobbs. Orchestration and performance by me with Charles Evans and Tim de Ferrars on Hammond.

I really appreciate the crit. I'm enjoying doing these songs and although I know there's a lot of mixing issues need addressing it's nice to know that people are still enjoying them :)

This a excellent. Parts of it sound like your are getting help from the Kinks :)

The ending is weird, but it works. Thanks for sharing.

Solid! &mdash 02/16/07 - 10:47:37 AM
I always appreciate music with a sense of humor - when it's done well, that is. I'm willing to overhear any "bad" language (not that there really is anything explicit here) and enjoy not only the vocals but also the excellent musical performance in this piece! Your "pop orchestral" genre made me curious, and while this song would do well in quite a few other genres, I like the variety and fresh creative energy. Sounds like you guys have a great time playing! Timing is pretty tight, and each instrument does the best with its own part in the song, blending perfectly. Excellent drums&percussion by the way. The structure of the song is exactly right to my taste. I'll take for granted that there will always be minor (very minor!) mixing issues until a band is signed and somebody spends days on the right balance, but what counts for me is the originality and energy of a song. And you guys got plenty of that. Thanks for sharing this!

Rock on Opera &mdash 02/25/07 - 05:52:49 PM
Dick - another great track, and I can't wait to see how this whole Opera/cycle pans out. You have a real vision here - sounds like a symphony for the 'common man'. This is the sort of stuff/ social comment Damon Albarn thinks he can write.

As always, a joy to hear a new track from you.

Steve

great stuff &mdash 03/03/07 - 05:37:17 PM
I loved the production you infused into this. The stops, breaks and turnarounds all colaborate to make it more than the sum of its parts.
Cool organ, really starts to take off, and then the guitar..simply enjoyable

What a great track &mdash 05/22/07 - 04:12:54 PM
Really great lyrics, vocals and arrangement I laughed my socks off. If this opera doesn't make it there's no justice. I'm off to listen to the other songs now, M
