Description:
This is a collab between me and a guy with the nick j0j0. He is mostly to be found on icompositions.com, and I met him as we where paired in the "invisible dyad" contest they had there.
I think it was a good collab and j0j0 has delivered a great performance on harmonica on my song.
He has lots of good tunes and I recommend a visit to his place.
All the songs submitted to the contest can be found here.
This one is #8.
Some of you might recognize the song, as I have made two alternative versions of it that can be found among my listing of tunes here. However I'm pleased with the groove and how this has turned out in this version.
Lyrics:
promise
Thor Oliversen©2006
The minute we met
I felt I'd known you
for a long long time
I guess I gazed at your moves
sort of paralysed
'cause you shone like the moon
and everyone else was pale
Then I noticed you'd look at me
and I knew it was done
We lost what we had before
We would just have - this one
So I promise you this
I will be what you loved at first
If you promise a kiss
To water my thirst
And now, you come to me
you tell me you're here.
And now, now I see
I want you so near.

j0j0's stuff, and my stash... fender strat, fender blues deluxe amp, morley wah, studio projects B1 mic, m-audio ozone, tokai bass guitar

Warm... soulful... &mdash 02/14/07 - 04:48:07 PM
and it gets better in each new version. The harmonica is a great addition. This laid back rendition is especially full of some soulful feeling... that guitar riffing the the feelings as you sing. Kudos. [ Reply to This ]

you got the blues &mdash 02/14/07 - 04:52:57 PM
Thanks for posting this great song here, Thor. Listening to it on MJ gives it an other dimension. Don't know how to express it. Brilliant track and wonderful guitar playing. I always wonder how you make these drums sound so 'live played' as well. It's like I'm sitting in a smoky blues/jazz club and enjoying this all with a glass of wine and a cigarette. You got the blues... in a marvelous way.

That description of the jazz club sounds like a place I'd like to go to. Maybe we could do that together once...
Thank you for your colorful inspiring words:)

Some really top notch stuff... I see you found another harp player to colab... this man j0j0 can really play. The whole mix is fantastic. Thanks for sharing. [ Reply to This ]
There is a LOT to like here... &mdash 02/14/07 - 09:14:52 PM
...and I probably won't get to it all...
I like the acoustic guitar rhythm, and the way you placed it in terms of panning and loudness in the mix...
I really like your touch with the wah-wah pedal... It reminds me of some old Stephen Stills that I used to have... Gotta investigate that Morley... although of course, there's the pedal, and then there's the fingers and mind of the guy playing...
Nice harmonica playing... and just enough piano and bass... There's more to this mix than would be noticed at first listen... Nothing getting busy or in the way...
I like the singing, too...

I noticed your post on meeting that saturation point on the time spent here to listen and comment. As I am not half way where you are in doing so, I totally understand what you are saying. This site is getting so full of good music and kind, talented people that its getting quite overwhelming to cover all we would like to.
Your comments are very, very much appreciated. You always comment in detail and show a respect and interest in the music you listen to.
As ziti would say... deepest bows!

Doing what you do best ..... &mdash 02/14/07 - 11:01:37 PM
... "real" R&B, not what passes for it these days. Nicely played and written Thor - you do this stuff so well. Lovely production, although I'd like to hear some more of the Hammond - jOjO's harmonica fits nicely. Sounds very live (drums sound particularly real).
Cheers,

I always enjoy your comments.
Thank you for the positive words about this one. And I agree about j0j0. He is a good musician:)
Regarding the Hammond... I'm really no keyboard player, so I usually go for a somewhat blurred chord bed on the Hammond with some sharper edges here and there. If I use piano it's almost always as a "hook-line" tool.
And the drums.. hmm I quite happy with the feel I get on playing those midi drums on my keyboard. With putting some global reverb on it I feel they blend pretty well in the mix.

come a long way.... &mdash 02/15/07 - 05:02:33 PM
from the first post of this I liked so well, this has matured into such a nice production. Your vocals are much nicer in the mix, and all of the elements you've played are super and well placed. j0j0's harp is great as well. . - Harold [ Reply to This ]

NICE GUYS! &mdash 02/16/07 - 10:02:59 AM
that mournful harp does some wicked curving - LOVE IT! the arrangement leaves lots of room for all the components to be properly acknowledged. you make that guitar moan in a delicious manner - very nice, thor. the piano is GREAT - um, there IS a piano, isn't there?? ;) jojo, your vocal is right on, and the harmony is yummy. enjoyed your creation, gentlemen! anne [ Reply to This ]
Soulful &mdash 02/17/07 - 06:03:27 PM
This song has a lot of ingredients, and they all work to establishng the basic mood of the song. In that sense all individual parts are excellent. But I wonder if you're overdoing it a bit, sometimes. There are a few places where either the harmonica or the guitar would suffice, but they wind up competing for my attention. Less is more? (And did you put autotune or so on those backing vocals? That's just weird.)
But hey, you've got an extremely soulful piece of music here. My compliments. [ Reply to This ]

one of your more warm, a very human, tunes, Thor - And all of your music, is some of the most 'human' songs, here on MJs, my friend. But this one goes right to my core, for some reason - The harmonica only adds to that, feel, but the brushes along side the acoustic guitar, the really bring home. The bass is very thick with warmth, too. And the piano...
I'm nursing a terrible cold right now, and this was not unlike a hot bowl some homemade chicken soup! (I'll bet no one has ever told ya that before...)
Music for the soul, indeed!
And you are, the soul man! Thanks for sharing with us, this very fine rendition of, you...
Peace!
