Description:
I could tell right away that Brian (Outlier) was an amazing guitarist, which was great because that's not my strength. Neither of us, however, could decide just how to start our collaboration. At one point I sent him a song I'd been working on to see if he could contribute his guitar expertise to it. Meanwhile, I visited his page here at MacJams and downloaded all of his posts.

I took them into Garageband and fiddled around with them. The two that I liked most were short guitar exercises: "STX Snowball" and "How I Waste My Time." I especially liked "How I Waste My Time" and began editing it a bit to see if I could extend it into a full song. Things quickly began to click. I started ad-libbing lyrics and came up with the "You've got me hypnotized" idea. I added a touch of lead in a couple of places, added bass, some keyboards in the third verse and a couple of drum loops.

Brian seemed dubious about the idea at first because, to him, "How I Waste My Time" was "just a random collection" of guitar licks and not meant as the start of a song. But to me it had the core ingredients of a fresh approach to a song. And after a few listens to a demo I sent to him, he could also see the potential. For those of you interested, Brian's initial post can be found HERE.

I rewrote part of the lyrics and did a final vocal. This isn't my usual style (mainly because I can't play like Brian) but I think you can tell from my vocals that I had fun singing this.

It was a real pleasure working with Brian on this project and both he and I hope you enjoy "Hypnotized." --JT

Lyrics:
HYPNOTIZED

I've been hypnotized.
When I look into your eyes
there's no hope for me,
I am hypnotized.
Yeah, a prisoner of your lies.
I can't see past your disguise,
'cause you got me hypnotized.

There's nothing sentimental in
the way you look at me.
And you're no angel when you smile,
you're overcome by gravity.
I've given up on not giving in
when you call to me
'cause I've been hypnotized.
You've got me lost in your lies.
Oh, baby, I've been baptized
into the magic of your eyes.

Oh, this fate I can't escape;
I feel my will evaporate.
I look at you and lose control;
I look at you and lose my soul.

You flirt with me then hurt me,
baby, you kiss, then reprimand.
From your lip gloss, you tease and boss
then you smile and lick my hand.
Oh, I've given up on not giving in;
I'm kneeling in quicksand.
'Cause I've been hypnotized.
Oh yeah, you're some kind of prize.
I know this path, it's not wise.
But, baby, you got me hypnotized.

I love the diversity we're getting!
This is again different and interesting from everything else that has been posted so far.
It sounds like you both had an excellent time in coming up with this.

Robin Trower meets the UK in a dark alley filled with plastic furniture, where upon they all stumble into a lounge filled with lizards and cats..... They all hiss. "Dig it baby...."

It's weird how much Random sounds like I was talking....
Excellent work my friends!

This is a musical direction I never would have tried without Outlier's awesome guitar work. When I signed up for this I was hoping it would lead down avenues I hadn't traveled before and that's exactly what it did. So, thanks for the Random Collaboration idea, I.Spike. I enjoyed being a part of this.

this really works! i dig the contrasting sections, and especially the interplay of the vocal and guitar. it builds up a tension that supports the lyrics just right.

thanks

Hi Smokey &mdash 02/22/07 - 02:14:04 AM
Yeah, I never would have sat down and tried to structure a song like this--wouldn't think it would work--but somehow it holds together nicely. The majority of this song's success is Brian's doing but thanks for your comment on my vocals. I'm usually a bit reserved in my singing but I knew this would only work if I gave it a soulful rendition. It sure was fun to sing.
All the best!

Hints .... &mdash 02/17/07 - 03:02:20 PM
.. of Jefferson Airplane .. meets ... the Doors ... meets Joe Satriani ... meets Santana ... wow all the elements were here. A mini-"concert" all rolled up into one song. I liked the vocals - just enough melancholy.

I sure hope Brian reads this. It'll blow his mind.
And thanks for your comment on my vocals. Nice to hear I caught the right tone.
Peace.

It's always nice to hear from you. Yeah, it seems to swing from rock to soul and back again, doesn't it? So glad you enjoyed the song.

I think alannah nailed it. Its great in that it covers so much ground. Almost zappa at points. I could see this is in a Rock Opera. Very cool, Bravo!

Wow, Zappa, huh? Thanks, I consider that high praise. I think I'll leave the theater to Tobin, however. Many thanks for your comments.
All the best!

Great, great, great! I love the description you wrote; gives us the whole perspective on how you approached this. It's got a very story-teller feeling. I love the warm tone of the guitar and vocals. They blend quite well. Well done!

Rock Opera &mdash 02/18/07 - 08:05:05 PM
This is really amazing! Practically the whole history of prog all wrapped up in one neat little package. Your approach to this was very clever, too. High theatre; top flight work!

Mercy, another Rock Opera comment! I'm stunned. I'm glad I pursued this song; I had serious doubts in the beginning that I could make it work. But it's really gratifying to hear such generous comments from you and others. As I've mentioned before, though, most of the praise belongs to Brian (Outlier) because without his terrific guitar piece, none of this would have happened.
Thanks for listening.

That's a great line. My favorite things about this song are the guitar work and the lyrics. I like the background about how the song was created - what a cool way to put a song together, Random collaboration rocks!
