Description:
I wanted to try and echo the swashbuckling feel found in those old colorful films made by the likes of Powell & Pressburger but kind of fused with folk. The painting is by Yuliy Yulevich Julius Klever

Lyrics:
Roe Deer Run

You ran in the corn with a fair lass in May
You ran in the corn with a fair lass in May
And then she made you cry - and then she told you why
She'd move the earth and sky just to get her sweet way
And some day you'll pay - be careful in the moonlight

You ran through the woods with a witch in Autumn
You ran through the woods with a witch in Autumn
And she looked into your past and told you what would be
Spins you round and round so you're blind to the sky
The centuries rush by - be careful of the moonlight

Roe Deer swiftly run
Lead me to the sun

You dig the land for a market farmer
You dig the land for a market farmer
And I can't stop drinking the whiskey and beer
Sleeping on a gravestone in the churchyard - 5 miles over hedges and stiles
Be careful in the moonlight

And you sailed the sea with a cut-throat pirate
And you sailed the sea with a cut-throat pirate
Now you're richer than a king and youve travelled the world
Though you sleep with a sword in hand for to fight
When thieves rave at night
Be careful in the moonlight

Roe Deer swiftly run
Lead me to the sun

And you danced on the bridge with the ghost of Riley
You danced on the bridge with the ghost of Riley
The fiddle he shall play
Lead you miles away
He's lost his mind they say
Yet the bones lie 6 feet
In the mouth of hell we shall meet
Be careful of the moonlight

You ran in the corn with a fair lass in May...

I really enjoyed listening to this song. It wasn't what I expected but I love being surprised by music.

Another song for my ipod/car CD player.

Great stuff Richard.

Well it's like this...... &mdash 02/19/07 - 05:02:25 PM
There are a lot of uploads because when I get an itch, I scratch it, for good or bad.

Hopefully my later stuff, from last November, is better produced and even put together better. Earlier stuff was just 'production line' music that I didn't put too much thought into.

Stand clear of the speakers!!

Paul

Hoorah for that! &mdash 02/19/07 - 07:34:16 PM
Also I might add that I'm guilty of being the one to stand right next to the speakers at gigs,is a wonder I can hear anything at all really.Rich - the itch is what my brother used to taunt me with.I say - GO MAN - SCRATCH IT!

I'm impressed &mdash 02/19/07 - 06:22:03 PM
Whoooo, I really like this. Lovely dark British psyche-folk vibe going on. Vocals and instrumentation all very nicely done and complementing each other beautifully. I try to avoid making comparisons because they're often unwelcome (!) but there's a certain infusion of Jethro Tull here in the guitar style ... but with a darker edge. Really nice stuff!

Well having just listened to some your songs here and at myspace,I would say that is a definate compliment.'British psyche-folk' is not a term I've heard before - but I like it!
Thank you

brilliant lyrics, &mdash 02/20/07 - 09:06:54 AM
fantastic rhythm, great melody! i LOVE that orchestra, playing in between strophes and verses. the combination of pure guitar strumming and full orchestra, which is used just perfectly, not too little, not too much, on just the right places, well boy...... thats something! really works for me. one of the best songs i heard here. i love it. hope to hear much more gems, like this one, in a future.
thank you richard, brilliant!

This was quite the journey!

What a lovely song! 'Swashbuckling' is right, with the steady pace and the added 'drama' in the use of the orchestration.

I thoroughly enjoyed this--will have to look up more of your songs.

thank you! :)

Passion: all I can say. You bring it all out in this song. This is a great song, very well arranged and performed. Good story, excellent poetry. In plain English; Bravo!!!

Fine rhythm in your singing and playing! Wonderfully light with the sense of adventure and a touch of Jethro Tull. Rare to come across music like this these days!

Great Strings &mdash 02/24/07 - 04:46:09 AM
I really like the strings and the tension they bring to the piece.

Good vocal harmony too.

Good song and well produced.

Dancing orchestra &mdash 02/27/07 - 10:36:46 AM
Great writing, wonderful arrangement ideas. The mix is a bit out of balance in my mind's eye, since I want the orchestra much louder, to be all around the main player (you), and at times I want them to bury your rhythm guitar with their power and hits, but they are in the next room dancing down the hall. Great song.

Thanks Tobin &mdash 02/28/07 - 12:30:30 AM
I want all that too - I've simply GOT to get some good orchestra sounds from somwhere - a new keyboard/midi player perhaps.Love the comments Tobin constructively critical but enthusiastic as ever! Thanks,RG
