Description
Well the one thing I love about England is the copses, and way back when I was 16 I used to spend summer evenings exploring them which wasn't always easy as they are usually on private land and I wouldn't promote doing this is any way. Then one day I heard a ghost story read by Michael Horden written by M.R. James called 'A Neighbours Landmark' and I loved it so much that I was inspired to write this song. The original story refers to 'That which walks in Betton Wood'

Lyrics
Abbey Wood - RG Paddler
(CHORUS)
I warn thee now I warn thee well
Be careful not to wander
Too far down that winding path
In Abbey Wood so green..
Verse 1
There was a maiden oh so fair
Who walked among the corn
And beauty she did find right there
A rose without a thorn
Said to the rose to she
Can I sing to thee?
And began to sing out loud
Our maiden fell asleep at this
And rain fell from the clouds
Verse 2
A young lad came to plough the corn
In Abbey wood so green
He came upon the maiden sleeping
Like a faery queen
Well he bowed down low and
He kissed her cheek
She sprang up eyes like fire
And never again was the young boy seen
By Farmer,Wife nor Squire
Verse 3
They say that on the Autumn nights
Beneath the rosey moon
That if you stand amongst the corn
A beast will find you soon
And the only thing that you may hear
Is my voice I forewarn
For yes - I am that wildest flower
..A rose without a thorn
(CHORUS)
I warn thee now I warn thee well
Be careful not to wander
Too far down that winding path
In Abbey Wood so green..

Sounds great--very traditional, timeless sound. The harmonies are real rich and full. The story is well-written and appropriately freaky--the temptation of the perfect flower, a rose without a thorn, will eat you alive...
