Peace, calm and Meloncholy - lonliness? &mdash 02/21/07 - 12:40:07 AM
Those are just 3 of the impressions I get from this tonal painting.
A name....a name....
Now that is the tricky thing, but I guess my impressions (the first ones) are always going to be tied to the movie 'Notes on a Scandal' which I saw just before I originally heard this.

a name.... &mdash 02/21/07 - 11:38:20 PM
...by any other sound?
thanks, Bryn, for the listens previous to my posting this. :)
(I'll figure out logic express yet! :D )
Hehehe.
Thanks for listening and commenting!

Arvo &mdash 02/21/07 - 07:34:05 AM
This is spectaclarly beautiful! It's one of the nicest things I've heard at MacJams. I like the early music feel that permeates it -- it reminds me a bit of Arvo Prt's music -- and I especially like the occasional crunchy dissonances you throw in there; they are never jarring, just colourful, and always resolve beautifully. Interesting harmony too.
My title suggestion: Mystery and Wonder
(named after two cats I had!) [ Reply to This ]
Mystery and Wonder &mdash 02/21/07 - 11:44:41 PM
....hehe. Cute names for cats :)
Thanks so much for these comments here.
Part of the fun of doing this piece was seeing what 'trouble' i could get into harmonically -- but without creating too much of a 'dissonant wreck.'
There's something very rewarding about resolving dissonance in classical music.
thanks again for listening, and commenting :)

Arvo Part &mdash 02/22/07 - 01:49:40 PM
um, that's supposed to be "Arvo Part," with an umlaut on the "a" in "Part." But it didn't like my umlaut, and changed his last name to "Prt." Which is a nice name too, of course, but not the same guy. --- ClarkRoss.ca is now welcoming visitors from distant planets -- Apply within [ Reply to This ]
NUNS &mdash 02/21/07 - 10:22:59 AM
i see/hear French nuns from a time of long ago, all lined up at the top of their convent castle and watching the sun come up. this is their morning ritual, just like eating their cheerios. or is it the END of the day celebration? HMMMMM! beautiful ending note - i liked your creation very much. anne [ Reply to This ]
Beautiful &mdash 02/21/07 - 04:09:56 PM
It reminds me of the Cloisters museum, for some reason... the unicorn tapestries, the suits of armor, the stone hallways and open cloisters. Long forgotten people and episodes... it sounds like ancient memories. Your voice sounds great as always! [ Reply to This ]
Unearthly World &mdash 02/21/07 - 04:31:27 PM
I think you hit the title on the head - "Ancient Memories"
I'd love to see this on the credit roll of an independent film. One in where the lead character dies in the end... I long slow crane pull out from the body laying a field of daisies with the wind undulating the tiny yellow headed stalks... your voice fills the listener with a sadness, and yet a hopeful push for our hero as he ascends to an unearthly world... (oh, wait, maybe that's the title....)

Beautiful. &mdash 02/21/07 - 04:30:37 PM
That was really something!
nice voice, nice texture, simple feel, with a complex underpinning.
Thanks for sharing.
How about "Misty Morning Glory"?

What keeps coming to mind is deep pink rose petals........ how soft they are inside.......and how fragrant :) [ Reply to This ]
Reminds me of Anonymous 4.... &mdash 02/22/07 - 09:24:32 PM
...especially the recording they did of secular, romantic music that ends up sounding sacred, even Gregorian, in parts....
It's a unified tension, or tension resolved... the heart's jangling longings seeming at odds only to discover that they're really just one longing, one we can't quite name...

Morning Prayer...or...Morning Devotions &mdash 02/23/07 - 05:26:33 PM
This lovely "a capella" vocal does have religious (cloisters) resonances, so I would go with an appropriate title including that concept.
This has a "prayer" sound to it, and conjures up images of the sun rising (rather than setting, for some reason).
Very nice, Cat! [ Reply to This ]
Hmmm. a name. &mdash 02/24/07 - 03:47:45 AM
The gradually rising melody made me think morning. Then there were were some progressions that made me think 'abbey prayer', but then you threw in some 7ths that blew the 1600s away, so what I'm left with is the idea of a winding road and a somber group of travellers going... somewhere.
There were a couple of 'pops' in here that I suspect were not part of the overall atmosphere. In LE7, you can snap to a crossing (not the real name, but I'm not remembering what it's called) to keep those pops out. This is actually easier in LE than GB.
Nice piece of acappella work. [ Reply to This ]
Graceful &mdash 02/26/07 - 08:23:37 PM
I was getting a kind of rootsy folkiness off of this, perhaps it's the hints of amazing grace and silent night near the beginning. I could just as well imagine this performed in an English country church (it has the acoustic feel of an old stone building). Maybe it's that you're using LE7 for the final mix but the sound quality of this is as clear as a bell, so very well defined.
It's wonderful to listen to - I really would love to hear this performed live - perhaps you could clone yourself and tour as a choir of Mystifieds!

PS - I'd be tempted to call this 'Grace' - it seems to suit all meanings of the word. [ Reply to This ]

I can't think of a name after just hearing it. I'll listen to it again soon and post again. Love it! [ Reply to This ]
Breeze Against the Ruins &mdash 04/07/07 - 12:31:56 PM
I had a number of thoughts, moments, situations, places run through my head-- but I felt like I was forcing them. I wanted the idea to just pop, not to suggest things to build on as i listened.
Ultimately, I had this image of sitting amongst some colonnades of ancient ruins as dusk settled in, the stars emerging one by one against the darkened matte. Sitting there, on the steps, just a blank mind at peace, the wind gently blowing across a sparsely vegetated landscape... [ Reply to This ]
