Description:
{See Rainstorm Final Mix with IGStudio} I wanted to write a song that goes back to the kind of music I played (sax) in the sixties. This is a blues/soul song that blends horns, organ, and guitar. Horns and organ created through GB software instruments. Bass (edited) and percussions are GB loops.
Hardware:
iBook G3, Shure mic, M-Audio, acoustic guitar w/pickup.

Ever Listen to PHISH? &mdash 08/05/04 - 05:06:24 AM
This song is good. Actually, a little better than good. It's
reminiscient of the Story of a Ghost Album by PHISH.

Glad to hear you like it. Mcboy, I wouldn't mind hearing
any of your input regarding the production side of this
song. Skygoing, I am not familiar with PHISH. I'll have to
check them out. Thanks again for the comments.

ooops...sorry ..i should have been more specific...the only thing about the
production that in "my opnion" that maybe needs some work is the amount
reverb used...to my ears the production sounds a tad distant....just my
2c..but i really dig this song and groove.....

Good sound &mdash 08/06/04 - 02:32:38 PM
Reminded of my childhood. Vocals are accurate, but
sound like they're being held back a bit. I kind of want to
hear them rip a bit. Nicely constructed song, though. The
horns sound pretty darn good.

Regarding McBoy's comment on reverb, it's seems
appropriate for the era this song harkens back to. I
almost feel the vocals could stand to have a tad MORE
reverb to blend in a little better. Of course, if you don't
want to sound quite as retro, then I agree that you should
tailor the reverb back a notch. [ Reply to This ]

Really love this track. Very soulful, makes me think of Taj
Mahal stuff. Love the silky rhythm... [ Reply to This ]

Horns sound very realistic; nice balance overall (yes, it's a little "distant", but sounds like it's "distant" by choice. In the scope of overal dynamics, the tune is begging for an instrumental break (I think - but I am not the author).
Any chances of you getting a horn? :) [ Reply to This ]

"Any chance of getting a horn?" Not anytime soon. Atleast not a decent one. Yes, originally I wanted a horn break but settled for a little guitar riff. This is the song I mentioned that I was working on and had thought of you. I think you responded with, "Let me have a try"? If you'd like, I'd love to have you play around with this and give it a horn solo.

I would want to try, definitely. Let me play with what you have out - this version, and if I feel that I can contribute something without spoiling the song, I'll ask you for GB bed, or sans-vocal fragment of a track, so I could record over it...
I hope you don't have a deadline for this project, for I have so many things started, I am afraid of myself... :) [ Reply to This ]

iGStudio,
You're on. No deadline, are you kidding? Time, I have plenty of. As I said, if you have any ideas that alter the song, I am open. It is about making good music!

Good blues tune. The horns aren't exactly compelling, but
it has a nice 'sketch' kind of feel. Like a proposal for a
song for a producer. I wish the harmonies varied a little or
something. Overall, it's missing something and I can't
quite put my finger on it.

I'm getting, Moody Blues or contemps from this. I love it!
It's got a great grove that feels good. It's very cool-- as in
groovy. [ Reply to This ]

First I want to thank you for your nice comment on my last song. Comments like that gives me inspiration to keep it up:-)
I feel the groove from the first chord here. This is a classic approach and works very well. You have the timing needed for making good music. Reminds me of J.J. Cale. Keep them tunes coming:-) I'm a fan! [ Reply to This ]
Definitley Blues &mdash 09/16/04 - 01:15:27 AM
Hey, I like the voice the way it is. There is expressiveness
within the "restraint". You have some very nice ways of
shaping certain vowels. I would probably pull back the
volume on the voice a tad. [ Reply to This ]
Definitley Blues &mdash 09/20/04 - 04:48:50 PM
Thanks, Rich, for your comments. It took a long time to record this through the use of 'pencil' horns and organ. I'd like to do more like this with a lot of instrumentation, but I may wait until I get a tenor and keyboard and a G4 or G5. The iBook G3 is just so limited with software instuments and number of real tracks. I appreciate the comments on my vocals. I am not real confident there [ Reply to This ]

I am glad you liked the song. Check out the the Updated Remix (Rainstorm
Final Mix) with a new sax solo
by IG Studio. It is an
improvement on this mix, as well as adding a great tenor sax break.
Thanks for the comments,
Jack
