Talk (4)Jims Riff (1)
Description:
This is a recording of my song Talk, performed by my earlier band called Jims Riff. It is taken from the original vinyl single, released in 1990. My poor record player didn't do a very good job with passing it on to a digital format... But as a curiosity I'll put it up here for a while...

We recorded this in a local studio. The band had three horn players, trumpet, sax and a trombone in addition to a traditional set up of drums, bass, keyboard (organ), two guitars and a vocalist.

Actually the bassplayer is macjammer Bent

The singer, Ingve Sandvold hasn't (yet) a macjams profile, but if you like his voice you can here a couple of tunes he has done in garageband here.

Smokin'! &mdash 02/25/07 - 02:39:10 PM
Thanks for sharing this track with us! It's really well done; very professional sounding. Your voice is filled with emotion, the arrangement works wonderfully, and the organ and guitar solos are smokin'. Great stuff!

Thank you for taking time to listen and putting down such fine words:)

I must point out that it is not me singing here, but my very talented friend Ingve Sandvold.

And that organ (the instrument) solo is really hot isn't it. I remember him doing that one in the studio... We were pretty amazed on how he virtually sat fire to that Hammond that day.

Gosh... there's gotta be blues bands... &mdash 02/25/07 - 08:33:14 PM
...sort of blues/soul bands.... just dying to get ahold of material like this...

That really is one heck of a Hammond solo...

This may be just me, but I also love hearing MacJammers' old tracks... such a great sense of history and exploration... Hearing you now, hearing you then...

So cool to hear some of that old vinyl crackle... Nice guitar solo, too... is THAT you?

Ed

Very nice reading this...:)
Yeah, it's nice to hear what people here have been up to in earlier years. Your songs from the tape recordings you've put out here is such a fine gem Ed.

And yes, the final guitar solo on this recording is me... I remember doing that over a few times 'till I was happy with it...

Still like the first version best &mdash 02/26/07 - 11:26:05 AM
Altho this is a very nice track, in my opinion, it lacks almost everything I love about your original version (song/2511): emotional authenticity, hot lead amp and playing, sexiness, pain, intimacy. This track is well performed and mixed and all, but failed to grab with the honest heart and soul of the original. I like your vocals much better, and the intimacy of your original lead guitar. (There were several digital clicks in this track, not sure what they were.) Listeners should check out http://www.macjams.com/song/2511 if they haven't heard it yet!

really... sexiness...:) &mdash 02/28/07 - 04:17:42 PM
Thank you Tobin for being a good ambassador for my first 'solo' take on that this one:) I'm of course flattered that you think my go at it is better than this one with the band.

I'm not able to see this myself. I think this version has the dynamics of being played by a band, and not a 'track on track' done solely by me. Some of the magic that is present when people play together in a band, is the chemistry going on between them. And that is obviously absent when you do things on your own.

However, I've always thought that the mix was a bit flat in the vinyl production.

Nice Blues &mdash 02/26/07 - 11:33:39 AM
Nice blues tune. I bet it's a real pleasure to have a band do a great job on one of your songs and then to put it on vinyl. They did an excellent job... the vocalists has a bit of a Tom Jones vibe going on. Very cool instrumentation... the mix sounds real pro. Thanks for sharing...

Nice words &mdash 02/28/07 - 04:23:44 PM
Thank you John:)

Oh yeah, I think it's a treat to hear my songs performed by the bands I've been in.
It might sometimes be a challenge to communicate how I have visualized it to be though. As I don't hand out sheet music to my band mates, songs will often end up with a totally different expression or groove then what I first had in mind. Sometimes that is good, and sometimes it just won't work:)

Rich! &mdash 02/26/07 - 11:39:47 AM
Cool that you have shared this with us, Thor.

Funny, '1990' & 'vinyl' would to some be an 'old fashioned thing' - hehhe. In my heart it's fresh, and so much music and style just never dies, eh?

How could I not like this? &mdash 02/26/07 - 12:07:11 PM
After all, it is my riff... :)
This is really nice, the horn section is smooth like butter, the organ solo is sweet, the guitar solo is sweet, and there's a cool sort of groove to the rhythm section. I am not really sold on the vocal; though impassioned, it sounds a little like forcing Brian Ferry to try to sound like Otis Redding, and for me the twain doesn't meet. The ending seemed a little abrupt, but studio time is expensive and you gotta end somewhere. I can imagine this being really a knockout live. Really interesting!

Jim... &mdash 02/28/07 - 05:03:46 PM
You know what's funny... We discovered that there actually is a guy named Jim Riff that was living in Stavanger (where I live) at that time. I called him up, and he showed at one of our gigs. Guess it was fun for him to have a band named after him:)

Thank you for listening and for your comments. Much appreciated:)

Incredible soloing &mdash 02/28/07 - 06:26:43 AM
Love the Hammond solo, and the guitar too. Playing is terrific all round, although I think I agree with Tobin that I prefer your own version.

There is a certain joy in hearing the "songs from the archives" of MJers. This is certainly a very cool addition to the ones already posted.

Incredible soloing - did I mention that??

Thanks Thor,
Neil

soloing &mdash 03/01/07 - 04:47:19 PM
We were a bit proud of how the soloing came out on this one. Funny thing is that every now and then we still play this version of the song, and the solos are sometimes played like they were right of the record. Every other song we have are with improvised solo parts, but on this one we tend to play them like they are here.

Thanks Neil:)

I'm flattered of your warming words. Thank you very much:)

In my opinion I have some shoe sizes to grow before I'm up in your league.
You are one of the finest artist here, and you have one incredible tasty composer gene. Coupled with a great voice
and ability to pull sweet tones and music out of your guitar...

the kind of band I would enjoy playing in... nice horn section you had there. I like the vocalist... but your vocal in the earlier version strikes me as the one I really like best.

Didn't we already agree on making a band that will go on tour around the area you live? A set up like this band had would work fine with me:)

Thanks for dropping by Jack:)

Thoddi- this is a real smooth track, and the vocals are fantastic - a real distinctive voice. The whole vibe here is of a rediscovered old classic - the transition from vinyl makes it feel even more authentic.

i always love to hear real musicians play - this has sucha live feel, I can almost see the stage from here.

Thanks for sharing
