Song Description
A poem about want.
I debated whether to repeat "I want" on each phrase or not... in print it seems unneeded, but when spoken, it seems to lend a certain cohesiveness to it. What do you think?

Lyrics:
i want
food
a warm bed
to be loved
a safe place
assurance
a soft pillow
everything
a future
summer vacation
to hit a home run
trust
to be liked
freedom
to be with my friends
the truth
to be tall
an easy path from here to the bar
& back home
physical love
to finish school
liberty
to be a rock star
world peace
to be a poet
a quiet day with a clear blue sky
to live out my life with you
happiness
technology
a music box that plays in-a-gadda-da-vida
your attention
if just for a few moments
the occasional soft day
a comfortable shoe
to be competent
a good night's sleep
to live out my life with you
a crackling fire in the fireplace
to know my children
will live good lives
my doubts to be eased
emotional love
snow on firs
to be on the team
a job well done
to be left alone
a cat in my lap
crickets singing at night
a fire truck
going somewhere else
more time
a light breeze rustling the trees
three day weekends
to be free of wants
simplicity
towering cumulus clouds
no aches & pains
thunder, in the distance
to be a poet
freedom
to know my grandchildren
will live good lives
peace of mind
to be remembered
a small bowl of vanilla ice cream
insurance
a past
to retire
my fears to vanish
summer vacation
to live out my life
with you
one of those big burgers they used to sell
with onions
that's all
i want

Ahhh... poetry set to music &mdash 02/26/07 - 11:40:48 AM
and your list is all there, except... make that a big bowl of vanilla ice cream, with chocolate syrup on top.
The piano goes perfectly with the words. [ Reply to This ]

these are things i've seen through the eyes of my grandson - my children - my parents - and through my own eyes over the years... it's a progression of viewpoints... [ Reply to This ]
I'l have what you're having &mdash 02/26/07 - 03:25:11 PM
Very nice piece Bill. I appreciate the wants without the longing - just the honest admission. Well done. [ Reply to This ]

You have captured the wants and needs of "everyman" (generic). This evokes so many emotions...Well spoken over lovely meandering piano...This is really good my friend!
Be well!

Can't wait to play this for my wife in the morning... I'm betting she'll laugh one of those good laughs...
Let me know when this is available as wall art...

i was hoping this poem wouldn't become too pretentious, since blathering about life tends go that way, so i added some humor to the seriousness.
your response concerns me a little. i hope the humor didn't overshadow the serious side of it. and i really hope the entire thing isn't just laughable.
was it that music box thing? [ Reply to This ]
The phrase, Bill... &mdash 02/28/07 - 09:59:48 AM
...is "one of those good laughs". As in, a laugh of recognition at the truth of something... and I think the truth of serious things IS funny, sometimes... Please don't worry about how your poem comes across... it comes across as very human, with all the shadows and light that comes with that...

I DID... &mdash 02/28/07 - 10:01:36 AM
...go searching Google for an In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida music box... Didn't find one yet... I found ring tones, but it's just not the same....

Ed - let me know if you find one - i might consider actually buying the darn thing!
i heard the claim that the true title was "In the Garden of Eden" just sorta slurred... i wonder if it's an urban myth? [ Reply to This ]

ahhh... *that* kind of good laugh. thanks for clarifying it for me. (oops, i left my insecurity hanging out again!) [ Reply to This ]

Bill, this is ... i don't know, it really touches me. This captures what it's like to be human.
You read this beautifully.

I want to write like you &mdash 02/28/07 - 09:39:01 AM
Well you got one of your wants for sure: you are a poet, and thank you for making my day. The piano serves to frame your spoken art well. I only laughed once, but it was hearty; that line about Inagada Davida, and it was because I indentified with the line so quickly that it surprised me. I love this piece. [ Reply to This ]

Piano bar scene &mdash 03/22/07 - 08:15:20 AM
Like a moment behind the mic at the piano bar when the guy finds himself talking out loud as one thought leads to another, catching everyone listening (maybe 10% of the restaurant patrons) by surprise, but oh what a grand surprise. After, several raise their glasses to you. One even gives you a generous tip, even tho he realizes that is beside the point, yet important and welcomed. Excellent performance too, by the way. And honesty. Stunning track. [ Reply to This ]

thank so much Tobin. i appreciate it.
re: honesty. somewhere long ago i read that good writing of any kind comes from the expression of the author's own real experiences and emotions. somehow i guess that notion stuck with me.
now, the real trick is to somehow observe yourself "objectively." and even more so to observe others and somehow place yourself in their shoes, and to express these ideas just vaguely enough so that they are misinterpreted (which is somehow vaguely dishonest in itself) as universals.
i try for that anyway. at least sometimes. when i remember to. :-) [ Reply to This ]

This one is amazing!!!!! &mdash 04/30/07 - 03:34:33 PM
I like the mix of the serious and the silly. Most human beings, who have grown beyond the frivolousness of youth, have felt these wants deeply knowing that this world can at times be a precarious place where we come to realize what is of true importance in a life well spent. And my favorite line, which is repeated is, "I want - to live out my life with you."
There is no greater love - no greater tribute than this - to be blessed with a soulmate in this life. I'm a sucker for a great line, and this is one of the most beautiful I've ever encountered. Another that takes my breath from my body is, "Vous et nul autre." (french) "You and no other." Simple, but profoundly elegant. Very few are posessed with the ability to express their love so outwardly. It speaks to the soul. She must be an amazing woman to inspire such prose. Shakespeare in present day. [ Reply to This ]

yes, i agree. life is a mix of the silly and the serious. but i also believe that one must try to appreciate both sides to really see it as it is.
& she is amazing.
