Description:
Written and Performed by:
Michele Senger: Cello
Bob Prince: Guitar
Michele, the cellist in this piece, is a dear friend of mine. Times were tough when we wrote this. In both of our separate lives. This song helped to ease the pain...if for only a moment.
It's from quite some time ago. I converted to digital just in time. The tape was degrading. Please excuse the sound quality. In a way, though, it's apropos of the situation. All a part of time's passing.

Nice Cello &mdash 03/04/07 - 02:20:11 PM
and nice pickin'. Excellent use of both instruments and the mood is definitely sad, but beautifully so. Well written and performed. [ Reply to This ]

For the listen and taking the time out to comment.
Not to stray, but:
...The "Buffalo Cafe" on your apron, there. Is that the one from whence the famed "Buffalo Chicken Wings" originated?
And: are you a chef?

My daughter says I make a mean Beans & Franks! &mdash 03/05/07 - 10:22:46 PM
No, that was a little jazz bar called "The Anchor Bar" that had a house band that could really cook. Usually about halfway through a basket of wings (and a pitcher of the beverage of your choice) some retired female jazz singer would get up show off some chops. Great wings, great beer, and great music. My wife bought me the apron(local logo shop) and my daughter took the picture cutting my head off; seemed to work for me. Love your stuff man, keem 'em comin'. [ Reply to This ]

definite longing... &mdash 03/04/07 - 06:30:12 PM
very sentimental, sweetly sad... the cello part was perfect, and really nicely played. Guitar gave a sparkly backing, but was also very nicely scored & played. Also very cleanly recorded, despite the couple of light-spots in the tape. Great save! Things like this are good to listen to sometimes, to remind us of the (relatively) good times now.

...beyond what's "good" in a piece, for me. Both of us are better players, at this point. But it's about what's being said and felt at the time. Still resonates with me and I'm glad it does for you, too, drak.

It is what it is... &mdash 03/05/07 - 08:00:52 AM
...and it embodies what it means to be...
That is one gorgeous piece, one gorgeous cello line... A lot of sadness in that line...
On my system the two elements, guitar and cello, are very nicely balanced. In the air, not using headphones, I'm not aware of drop-outs... It may sound a little analog-y, but that's its charm... It's a warm and human message from days gone by...
Sad but not hopeless or despairing... Really nice...

I love cello! &mdash 03/05/07 - 09:49:53 PM
This is a lovely, sad combination of two of my favourite instruments. Michele's playing is so soulful - I don't know much about cello technique, but it sure sounds good to me. Your guitar is a perfect foil, providing a softer, perhaps more uplifting feel. Lovely balance - Sound Soaping would be worthwhile on this beautiful tune.

The cello... &mdash 03/06/07 - 07:44:57 PM
...is just a wondrous instrument. And I was extremely pleasantly surprised at how well it worked with the guitar. Your description of the interaction is quite apt.
Yep...Michele's playing/technique was real fine, then. She's more than kept at it and is still playing, professionally. She's a wonderful player and musician.
Thanks, mate.

So beautiful,... &mdash 03/06/07 - 11:23:19 PM
it makes me almost happy to be a little sad...
For an 'old' tape, the sound is really quite good. The mix of these two mid-range string instruments is great - not muddy, as can sometimes happen. Very free and unencumbered playing, which pulls me into the emotions being shared. [ Reply to This ]
"it makes me almost happy to be a little sad... " &mdash 03/07/07 - 06:54:30 AM
There's a sweet thrill to sadness that resonates from the past. And the music that expresses it.
Sometimes (when it's in retrospect, that is) we can just appreciate the fact that we were there: alive, experiencing the moment; happy, sad, or in between.
Then, of course, there really are the moments that are best left alone...
Thanks for the visit, Kristy.

Hauntingly beautiful &mdash 03/10/07 - 04:25:09 PM
I'll echo "nice save!" Though I'm expecting that you've got plenty more beautiful pieces like this in your head. This is as stunning and moving as any composition that I've heard in a motion picture soundtrack, though this doesn't fall prey to the sound-alike syndrome that so many modern composers have. Unaffected by commercial forces and coming solely from your hearts, this is such an effective track. Michele's playing is achingly emotive - she strokes with the depth of feeling of Yo-Yo Ma. And your guitar does the work of an entire orchestra, only more intimately. This is another one for the D/L department. I didn't notice any sound issues because I was so utterly swept away in the emotion of this piece. Bravo. [ Reply to This ]
That's very nicely said, Bing &mdash 03/11/07 - 03:46:28 PM
We, quite definitely, had absolutely no commercial notions with this tune. It was a complete catharsis. A necessity.

Sorry if it sounds cliche...but it's so important, to me and you nailed it: hope must always be given safe harbor. A place to hide from the storm and be restored.
There is no stopping time's passing. A cause for sadness, celebration, or both, depending on the situation.
Thanks, Scott.

Beautiful collalboration. &mdash 03/19/07 - 07:31:55 PM
I was reminded of Albinoni's Adagio in G, but not to say that this is derivative in any way. There is so much of both performers poured into this performance, it feels like eavesdropping or spying on a tender moment. So glad you were able to salvage this. [ Reply to This ]

I wonder if you have written this out...and I wonder if you'd consider a bit of quiet orchestration behind it...The cello tune is just splendid and full of pathos and I can just hear a string orchestra backing this whole thing up. A really lovely number in every way and so beautifully played. I am way impressed. I'd be honored to work up an orchestration, but you may like this number just the way it is. ... I did enjoy it very very much.

... the sadder it is .. the happier it makes me .... I soooooooooooo love a good sad piece of music ... it actually calms and I believe that if you can feel the emotion and have a good old cry with a lovely piece of music ... you have no other real reasons to cry at all ... thus the happiness part .... however ... I often don't think of pieces like this as being sad as much as a fabulous piece rich with emotion ... and the tears are actually those tears of joy at listening to a beautiful piece of music ... mixed in with feeling blessed that I have ears that work and that I am able to listen to music. Life's Painful Interstices &mdash 07/20/07 - 08:30:41 PM
Much like your musical tagline suggests, it's often our experiences --- and actions --- during those discomforting periods that help define who and what we are... and what we choose to become.
The Arab proverb says: "All sunshine makes a desert." So it is in life.
Musically, I'm jealous. I have no friends who play cello. I'm stuck with my samples. ;)
Nicely done. :)

Wake Up Call &mdash 08/07/07 - 09:20:07 PM
OK Bobby baby,
After I woke up from a 3 1/2 hour "lullabye" driven nap, my coworkers had shaved my eyebrows off again and soaked my hand in warm water. I'm still cleaning up the mess, but I had to check this song out since it was labeled "Classical" like my other favorite guitapick tune was.
I'm comforted by this beautiful melody. It makes the events of my rather typical day seem, well, ridiculous.
Your guitar playing with Michele's celling was meant to be. I can't think of a better match. I am also happy to hear that you saved this song from decay. If anything happens to your remaining copy, it looks like there are 40 people before me who downloaded this gem to their iPods.
Great song man. You are one smoking duo.

I don't know if I should have listened to this back to back with the orchestral version or not - I feel well wrung out now. This bare arrangement speaks directly to the heart just as much as its counterpart, and the cello is so full of emotion when paired with the soft urgings of the guitar. Not just well played but beautifully expressed. Thanks folks.

The combination of Cello and Guitar is sublime and balanced, reminds me of Kristina Olsen and Peter Graylings performances in the UK in 2006. Peter plays Cello and Kristina sings and plays various guitars.

Hi &mdash 02/07/08 - 02:44:28 PM
Thanks for the kind words. Michele and I wrote and recorded this and another tune (http://www.macjams.com/song/34277). Got to get her into GB to do some more, as she's living out in DesMoines, Iowa and I'm in New York City.
I'm actually in the process of deciding whether to include both in my first cd or to divide them and put this tune on the second (down the road)...leaning towards the together at the moment...
Very happy you enjoyed this. Thanks for the visit. [ Reply to This ]

Thanks, Bill. I'd like to do this one again, someday. Like to lighten up that first section a bit....maybe leave out some of the descending bass notes (do 2 per phrase instead of 4).
Fact is, though, that the piece says exactly how Michele and I were feeling at that moment. It was what it was, as they say. So...this version stays put.
I'm happy that you checked out one of my older tunes. I've been playing alot lately, but little time to record. Got lots to do...thanks, again.
