A sailor's song... Please don't take the lyrics too seriously. This is close to a parody.

Lyrics
I spent the night in the arms of a godfallen angel
Feeling like home again
I walk the street that will take me back to the sea
That's where I'll be

Twenty four years on a ship that has sailed all the oceans
I smell like fish and salt
With every harbour a woman tender and free
Waiting for me

Hasta la vista, my life's in the hands of Poseidon
Hope he feels fine today
I will find comfort in friends who drink whisky and wine

Time goes by
Waves and water
Hores and lovers
Whisky and wine
Mates and mothers
Whisky and wine

I spent the night in the arms of a godfallen angel
Feeling like home again
I walk the street that will take me back to the sea
That's where I'll be

Hasta la vista, my life's in the hands of Poseidon
Hope he feels fine today
I will find comfort in friends who drink whisky and wine

Avast!
I'm a sucker for a good accordion song Walter ;) I'm so glad we have people like you bringing aspects of European music traditions to MJ!! A ring of Tom Jones' "Delilah" about it, but so different in overall feel and impact. Man that's "deep"!
Thanks for posting this Walter,
Neil

Euro tradition
I just needed to explore that Bolt midi accordian, which I used to embellish a part of my 'Somehow' song. Initially I intent to make a 'valse musette', genre Jacques Brel, but I didn't succeed to make the instrument sound natural enough. So I chose for this slower 'oompa' genre :-)
Tom Jones? Haha, this guy never came up in my mind during the song, but now that you mention it, yes I clearly hear your comparison with Jones' Delilah.
Thanks for the listen again, Neil. Very much appreciated as always!

love it
This is so colorful in the most delightfully dreary drunken way. A great salty sailor song. I really like the molody, particularly the way it turns at the end of each verse.

Your vocals are excellent as always, perfect for such a song. I also like the treatment you gave it.

I think the bass and the accordian need to be panned apart a little. I think I'd maybe puch the bass over to the right side a bit; seems like there is some space over there.

I love it.

panning...
Thanks so much for honouring me with your visit again, Peter. Very heartwarming words here. And yes, I don't doubt your panning advice for a second. No excuse, but there's this thing with my headphone, which pans slightly too much to the right. So the final mix is always a slight guess. Hmmm... I know what my next buy will be :-)

This is very well done Walter. I'm a bit curious to if/what you've played yourself here...

The drums and bass is right on the spot, and the times the bass follows the accordion on some runs it tells me you've actually played them yourself.

I that accordion a real one?

The composition is well crafted. Like Peter points out, you've made some tasteful choices of how the melody goes.

drunken waltz
Hey Thor, thanks for stopping by again. And welcome on my ship this time :-)

To give you some answers: The accordian is a software instrument (Bolt accordion, which I downloaded somewhere). No loops (all keyboard input), except for that mandolin in the background at the end of the second verse. But it is cut to pieces and tuned to the melody. The bass is GB's upright bass, and the drums is GB's Studio toolkit.

Thanks again for the listen, Thor!

I am enjoying ...
... the diversity of your Macjams offerings .... every bite a different flavour ... maybe it's the accordion .. but I hear a hint of "gypsy music" in here too. Your vocals just keep getting better and better too! I am definitely hearing a lot more melody and movement. Always a pleasure when I see a new Moorlandt song notification waiting in my mailbox.

You're right Alannah, I like to cross some new boundaries once in a while. This was a fun song to do, and I dig your 'gipsy' comparison (for sure it's mainly the accordian sound). I'm much honoured that you keep track of my new songs. Thanks a bunch, milady!

What a change of tack Walter - the opening vocal sounds like Delilah by Tom Jones - I could see you crooning this in a rough Belgium bar surrounded by adoring ladies of the night. Love your voice in this, it almose slurs the words, and I totally get Alimars Elfman reference.

Great fun little track - hasta la vista baby!

Fred, don't tell me you also believe this is a real accordian??? I play as good accordian as I play soccer. Nougat zero! Software squeezebox, my boy... But I had fun with the 'expression' knobs in garageband to make it sound as realistic as possible.

wow!
Another song using the Boldt accordian. I used it on my song "Hell", and the GB upright bass as well which is also currently on the charts. Well you know what they say about great minds! It's a great accordian sound and you use it well. I like this a lot! The Nick Cave comparisons are appropriate, but I think you are using a bit more control. I think I would have liked "The Hands of Poseidon" for a title a bit better, as "Sail On" has been used before, and it would be a better clue into the mythical content of the song. Compared to what you usually put out this is not too complicated, and it works really well. Not sure about how I feel about the ending so abrupt, but then it was over, so no big deal. Great song!

I love the Boldt Accordian!
and you use it so well, here! After reading several comments, I can say,"yup, that's what I was going to say." You certainly defy classification, Walter! Everything you do explores different aspects of music. I would have loved to hear an 'outro' that balanced the intro in length. (But then, maybe that was the point at which the accordianist passed out :)

that moniker popped into my head upon hearing a few measures of this - cuz you truly do create intense moods. that accordion's relentless dronish quality works so well. very cool melody with interesting changes. your vocal is ACES - you bring so much drama to your pieces - quiet drama in this one, but DRAMA is definitely there. excellent sound package, walter! enjoyed, anne

How did I miss this.
Shades of Kurt Weil, Tom Waits rancid accordian. Suggests that shadowy germanic thing that has influenced so many people in the post war years. Ute Lumper does Jacques Brel. Your voice sounds terrific but could suggest a little more drunkness with a little more fluttering of the lips a bit of spitting wouldn't go astray, I'm not explaining myself very well, but maybe you'll get my drift. The accordian sounds excellent. As always your production values are pro. Fab.
