Description:
Since I posted Instructions 2, I thought I would also post Instructions 1, although this piece is a fairly rough improvisation.
It developed the same way--with a set of instructions from Bryn ( biba_nova) --though the initial inspiration for 'cotton candy moon' came from the photograph you see as song art.
The guidelines were these:
One track must be far-away, ascending the scale.
Another track must be closer, descending the scale and offering counterpoint to the other track.

Wanting to use 'cotton candy moon' in the lyrics, I borrowed from the tradition of children's rhymes and fairy tales and wrote something I hoped would sound magical and slightly haunting--moving from major to minor mid-song.
Enjoy :)
Lyrics:
I saw a cotton candy moon,
In the sky, in the sky
I saw a cotton candy moon
high up in the sky
It sailed on cotton candy seas
In the sky, in the sky
It sailed on cotton candy seas
high up in the sky
But then the rain came falling down
In the sky, in the sky
And all aboard the ship were drowned
High up in the sky
The moon, it sank in stormy seas,
In the sky, in the sky
For cotton candy dreams are these
high up in the sky

haunting &mdash 03/06/07 - 06:20:39 PM
this brought a tear (a good tear). i'm not quite sure why. maybe it's something about childhood and how long ago that was... ?
the modulations and major/minor changes work incredibly well!
thanks

I love the light, straight tone quality of your voice for the melody of this - perfect for a pseudo- children's song. I also like the major/minor modal change, as well as the 'sad' parts. So many older nursery rhymes and Mother Goose songs have an element of sadness and even death in them, so this followed in those footsteps quite admirably. [ Reply to This ]
mental gear shifting... &mdash 03/07/07 - 10:46:30 PM
This is beautifully stark, I like the idea of your voice being in 3 different "planes" for the harmonies. I also really like the idea of shifting from major to minor as the tone of lyrics changes. What I had trouble with though, was your half-step-up modulation, twice. Without much lead-in before it, that took my brain a little bit to catch up to what you were doing, and I don't know if *not* doing that (staying in the same key) might be better... but of course, this is likely just my brain unable to keep up, treat this with a grain of salt. Anyway, I love the sweet strong melody, sung in both major and minor, and the ambiguous but crystal-clear lyrical imagery.

Ring around the rosy [moon] &mdash 03/08/07 - 08:44:45 PM
Just that proper touch of sing-song dread... turning deftly dark...
I have a sense of this tune opening a Stephen King movie... or maybe he needs to hear this song and write a new novel to incorporate it...
Ashes, ashes, we all fall down...

Also reminds of me Nick Drake's 'Pink Moon' and 'Black-Eyed Dog'... [ Reply to This ]

its a brave thing to do just vocals and something I warm to.This is quite beautiful and has a haunting sound. If I was listening to this while walking through the forest by moonlight (something I'm prone to do often),I'd be half scared, half enchanted.Paints pictures to me of wolves, glow worms,graveyards,pre-raphaelite women with lanterns.LOVE IT!! moonlight, wolves, glo-worms.... &mdash 03/22/07 - 03:23:24 AM
Ooh...PreRaphaelite ?
Perhaps that is an influence as I'm a big fan of the PreRaphaelite painters and the fairy tales/stories they illustrated.
And after all, childrens rhymes and songs are another form of storytelling, for the most part :)

"Sing-song dread" sums it up beautifully (thanks Ed). This brings up some very dark scenes. Beautifully done.

...had to come back...
This tune just tugs at my heart. Something about it. Like the sirens are calling me back to my past...my childhood...
Kudos, Mystified. Very moving.

I appreciate the comments--and glad you came back for another listen.
Sometimes simplicity is important and is a way of 'saying more,' so it's nice to get your feedback :)
Thanks again. [ Reply to This ]
