Description:
This song has the most vocal layers I've ever done, heh! Wanted to create something with an ambient flavor this time as well as doing a "Queen-like" vocal treatment. Comments and criticisms always welcome

Lyrics:
Drifting in and out upon a restless sea

As I lay me down, I pray the lord my soul to keep

Peacefulness is just a world away

Can I leave this earth, or am I compelled to stay

Filling up the spaces, with my memories

Chasing through, yet I have trouble conjuring

A lucid dream

Where do I begin, to reach the ending

A story cracked apart, many of the pages missing

Still I go on, in this weathered frame

Can I leave this world, or am I compelled to stay

Captured in a moment, neither here nor there

Your warm caress approaching, then it disappears somewhere.

Encompassing a lucid dream

Doodliness! &mdash 08/06/04 - 09:03:47 PM
You captured it, man! PackO... are you sure you didn't use
vice-grips to hit those high notes? The ambience and
separation are Superb-O! Walka prouda, PackO... Walka
prouda!

8-10-9-8

Many thank Alimasta! I'd walk proud it, but it's tough in these vice-grips,
heh!

THe music &mdash 08/06/04 - 10:58:46 PM
captures the heart of the lyrics remarkably well. The
percussion is hypnotic. I love the build toward the end. I
hear this used in a compilation for a movie (not the same
as BEING a movie soundtrack). Very well done! One pip: it
might just be my ear but some of the lower-pitched
vocals sometimes sound a tad out of tune.

THe music &mdash 08/07/04 - 06:03:41 AM
You're probably right, it's actually rather tough for me to hit those low
notes and hold 'em... perhaps another stab might do the trick and some
more testosterone, heh! Thanks for the compliments as well, very
appreciated!

wonderful &mdash 08/06/04 - 11:35:48 PM
i think i was saying something to you about this.. about
pushing it further. you did! bravo! :D

your strongest vocal performance is in the soprano parts -
you're kind of like me i think, sounding best at higher
notes.

i somehow imagine a bigger sound toward the end or
something... but i don't know how one would go about
doing that hehe.

this reminds me a bit of a marriage of U2 and Moby. like
U2 discotheque era (if i'm correct?? not too up on my U2
history here, heh).

ooh ooh i see you used your guitar... i think you could
pump that up and make the whole thing thick and full!
BANG!

way to go, "dood."

wonderful &mdash 08/07/04 - 06:07:09 AM
Thanks Pengy! Yeah, I suppose it's easier to hit the notes when you're
pushing more air out of the lungs eh? I do have a synth added to try and
increase the ending as well as higher volume on the guitar, but perhaps
it need something more, eh? I just hope the processor can take another
layer, heheh!

Spectacular arrangement &mdash 08/07/04 - 12:45:12 AM
Packo, this is a great listen. The arrangement works
beautifully, as you change the kind and the number of
layers at different parts of the song. The song takes us
where it wants us to go. This is very, very well done, and
very creative.

Tremendous track, a great listen.

The only suggestion I have is so picky as to annoy even
me: Your very cool percussion involving wood blocks of
various pitches ==> I wanted to hear everything after
beat four of each measure cut off. This is in the intro and
the breakdown before "Where do I begin..." How much did
it hurt your song you didn't do that? Um, zero, to a first
approximation. I also agree with Madam PSocks that the
end could use a boost - an e. guitar solo, and/or a high
pad. Without either of those, this is still a great song. I'll
bet you were buzzing when you finished it.

Man, I like this. Nice going.

Spectacular arrangement &mdash 08/07/04 - 06:11:11 AM
Thanks Futzpucker for the high marks and comments!

Yeah, I too would like a "bigger" ending, but I really filled this puppy up
with layers and bogged down the processor, heh! I did add some stuff
before, but muddled up the mix, still learning that part of the process,
squeezing as much as I can into a song without dirtying it up.

Funny, cos I actually did cut out all the sound before, but felt as though
the song "stopped" because of it.

I love the 80's &mdash 08/07/04 - 01:19:29 AM
I don't know what it is, and don't take offense, but your
tunes seem to have a big 80's influence. But hey, who
doesn't love the 80's. It's got the makings of early 80's
sythns and beats, without the cheesyness that usually
accompanies them.

The lyrics are what drew me to like the song even before i
heard the track. I love it when your lyrics come together
so beautifully with your music, or even just the loops;
mainly because as a writer, i wish to do what you do. All in
all, great song, one of the best i've heard on mj. Great Job
and Keep Em' Coming!!! 7-8-9-9

Heh, none taken, I do love the 80's, heheh! And I feel that influence
myself.

Wow! Thank you for the compliment on the lyrics, I never fancied myself
a very good lyric writer. That really means alot to me. :)

Nice Beat &mdash 08/07/04 - 03:12:29 AM
very nicely done, different, vocals aren't really Queenish
IMHO, BUT almost Bowie-ish from the LOW period, then
again, TOTALLY different from other things I've heard.

8.75 overall

Thanks juedm! Now that you mention it, I do feel a Bowie vibe with those
low vocals. Now if I only had his voice.... heheh!

Heh... over produced? Most likely, heheh!

Okay, so I went through the song saying "Shuck-a-dub" over and over....
where is that? Heheh! I am glad you like it, though!

Dead Can Dance? I like that comparison! That tells me it has a darkness
to it I was after, Thanks!

You are a very talented singer and musician Joseph, and
this track is yet another venture into a different area.
I like the beat and the backgound vocals add a nice depth.
Its a dark ambient groove and I love it.....

Awww, thanks Slimmie! Yeah, I seem to keep jumping genres, eh?
Heheh! Although, there is that one glue that holds all my music together
and that's the 80's influence, heheh!

Although, I couldn't figure out what the "If" headline means. :P

Dee-licious &mdash 08/07/04 - 08:33:29 PM
I am a big fan of the complete thought--and this one is beautiful! You definitely are a tenor though you pull off the lower vox, and have a wonderful quality to your vocal sound. pitchy in the lower end--perhaps you can remedy this by raising the soft pallet a bit--like making a yawn--as you sing. I loved it!-M

Dee-licious &mdash 08/07/04 - 09:14:46 PM
Hey Handovergold... thanks for the tip, I'll give that a try! Yeah, it gets
tough for me to hold the note in that lower region... I almost cheated
and "pitched" my voice down, then decided not to.

lush textures &mdash 08/08/04 - 08:36:40 AM
This is the most FULL and powerful sound texture I've
heard from you. It's wonderful!

The bass and piano notes provide a deep, insistent....and
yes, almost ominious foundation to the EXCELLENT lyrics.
Very effective.

I'm surprised that you don't "fancy yourself a good lyric-
writer", because these lyrics are downright POETIC!

Yes, the layered vocals were very well done....and I think
that the less-strong lower notes added a certain poignant
touch which actually enhanced the lyrics! Sometimes a
perceived "weakness" turns out to be a "strength".

Aside from the obvious comments regarding the high-
quality musical content, production and performance of
this track (bravo!) I was particularly impressed with how
the music matched the words. It created a very powerful
"whole".

Masterful job!

Thanks Cameron! I always appreciate how you see things that I would
not recognize, myself, heheh! It's definitely a piece I tried to infuse as
many layers into that I could.

This is great! &mdash 08/08/04 - 02:47:54 PM
With every song you make, you just get better and better. The layered voice effect sounds awesome, it gives the vocals a lot of depth. I don't really think that being off key a bit is a bad thing, it helps that lower voice stand out a little more, like it was a different person singing besides you! hahah! The high notes were hit perfectly.. now if I could just get my voice back in shape, we could sing some opera together. =P

This is great! &mdash 08/09/04 - 01:03:21 AM
I agree with Scarlett, I think the lower vocals are very interesting and it gives an undertone kind of hum sound. And maybe the (very Very ) slight off key is what gives this cool undertone sound that makes the other layers seperate from it. If that makes any sense. I can hear seperation of tones that I really think sounds great. Sometimes perfection can be BORING! The little differences in our voices or maybe slight imperfections (I feel) is what makes singer stand out! If we all sang perfect no one could tell us apart! Excellent song, Excellent Singing...I've downloaded it!

This is great! &mdash 08/10/04 - 12:28:29 AM
Thank you both... I'm not necessarily sure I'm diggin' the slight flatness
of my lower voice in spots, though. I suppose it's not that I should sing
perfectly, but in key helps, heh! My attempt was to create "one" voice
with many notes... but I didn't realize how tough harmony is until
tackling this one.

Fantastic &mdash 08/09/04 - 04:02:22 PM
I love the quiet intro and the throbbing pulse of the thing.
You'd think a guy would get tired of it, but nope. You give
it the right amount of variety.

Fantastic vocals, especially the layered background vox.

One of the best songs I've heard on here in quite a while.

A Dream a Moment &mdash 08/09/04 - 11:26:15 PM
Reminds me of a combination of a couple of artists: New
Order, The Human League; and Simon and Garfunkl (at
the very beginning).
Terrific composition. Brings me back to the 80's ;)

Yeah, goody! Juedm was right with the Bowie comment...
maybe that and INXS or something. A little 80s, a little
90s. Good work. Solid arrangement.

Sounds almost ecclesiastical &mdash 08/10/04 - 08:23:17 PM
Can see a few rows of monks singing this, Sounds like a
slightly darker version of Enya or some other band that
did record monks and put a beat to them and I can't
remember there name..*ahem*

Yeah, reminds me of being inside a big cathedral, Just
came back from York where they have a massive one
called York Minster.

Love that beat. Big full sound. A religious experience..

What an atmosphere, I like the distant voices and the
general mood: the contrast between the harsh beatings
and bass and the "layered" parts is intensifies the thrill !!
