Song Description

Mauna Loa

low - surf
climbing - footsteps
high - rainbow clouds

milliseconds - now
decades - ahead
millennia - children promise

nothing - was
anything - is
everything - will be

stairway - see
tread - oh
softly - too

Light March &mdash 03/10/07 - 07:42:49 AM
Some interesting applications of instruments here. Marching build up is fun. Most of the instruments are applied with restraint which I like. The "wood block" loop stands out because it sounds like it always plays and always at the same volume, this maybe your intention but to my ears it could have been suppressed in the middle of the piece.

you know, maybe that wood block does go on a bit too loud. not sure...

i tried to balance lots of different World styles in a way that is somewhere between harmonious and dissonant simultaneously.

thanks

Playing the black keys - &mdash 03/10/07 - 09:26:13 AM
I like this a lot - nice patient build through Hawaai to Calypso - Raga Rock - Ravel all with a steady martial beat that never gets boring. End a great ending to boot.

i woke up one morning thinking of this song. i guess i created it while asleep. the shape of the graph drove the composition.

i wanted an escalating build up, i wanted to imply the whole world is involved.

that Ravel thing just sort of happened. it pleased the heck out of me when it emerged. the song came out rather happy, but i had a serious theme in mind. that dichotomy makes it a bit scary: we're happily marching into oblivion i guess.

thanks for listening

Thanks for this trip.

i had fun piecing together the various instruments, it took some doing to get the order right, so that softer sounds didn't get buried under louder ones. i'm happy you noticed this.

thanks!

no end... &mdash 03/10/07 - 02:04:20 PM
to the top of the stairs. that was a nice steady climb. and the view is wonderful from up here.

the Mauna Loa angle to this interested me. i love Hawaii. climbing the mountain lets us see the big picture...

this is not relevation number 9 (but perhaps in a way it is?), but it is just a little Beatles-esque. "A Day in the Life" suits me fine as another angle on that stairway graph...

thank you

Really nice smoke &mdash 03/10/07 - 08:30:20 PM
As I listen to this I am evisioning a great migration up to the top of the mountian for only one purpose ... to reach the summit, and enjoy the view. There are many times that I think I spend too much time making music on my mac for the sole purpose of "reaching the summit and enjoying the view" so to speak, but the journey and the view are so much fun that I can't help myself. You captured that well here and I would not change a thing. On my studio JBLs the mix is flawless and the persistant wood block is perfectly mixed throughout.

A couple of corrections &mdash 03/11/07 - 09:04:11 AM
The first sentence of my previous post should read "envision" . And the more I thought about it the more I think I used the wrong version of the word "sole". I should have used the word "soul", because it ... well, just because.

Stairway to Smokey! &mdash 03/11/07 - 02:12:13 PM
Hey! This is very cool. Kind of an aural vacation...Yes, wood block is a tad loud in places, but it still works. Like a hidden track on a Beatle album....I really enjoyed our climb together Smokey, let's do it again sometime!

Be well!

i really like build up songs - i guess - the "climbing a mountain" metaphor fits that nicely. it is like the vacation i think i need about now...

it's not the longest crescendo in history - but i'm working on that.

thanks

Neat combination of instruments &mdash 03/11/07 - 08:37:56 PM
The addition of melodic instrument that modulate upward really heightens the sense of a long climb!

the layering of instruments was to hint at the involvement of all the world's cultures, and the modulating upwards was to go with climbing CO2 levels... as such, it is a long climb, humankind's been at it for 50+ years now.

I dig it!

... i can see that ... yet, i don't feel relaxed ... but perhaps i do feel like we are all children at heart ...

I thought &mdash 03/15/07 - 12:52:48 PM
I left a comment on this one. Well mabye not. Like this I feel I am in a harem in an asian mountian. Waiting for my concubine. Great visuals . the build up toward the middle is very nice I like how it almost pans from the left slowly to the right. then fills my speakers as the drums (to me) get louder. The ending is very soothing after the build up. Excellent song

i had noticed that you fav'd it, but maybe the comment got lost. that seems to happen now and then to me too.

i didn't intentionally pan it, but the cross fades may have caused that effect accidentally. the drums definitely do build up. a Scottish drums thing builds up in the middle and an orchestral kit does the final build up at the crescendo.

thanks for listening

nice &mdash 09/14/08 - 06:18:37 PM
has some "bolero" style which I often think about...

Very well done!

Greetings,

Bernd

interesting forum image to coincide with this piece, i like the transcendence in the music notation. Intriguing, conceptual piece.
